During my time as a student in PG County Public Schools, it was routine for 5th graders to attend Camp Schmidt. The purpose was to get a real-life science experience outside of the classroom - kind of an extended field trip, because we stayed there for a few days. They put us up in bunk beds in their cabins and everything. My mom chaperoned a decent sized group of girls during the trip and stayed in the room with us. Mad props to you, Mom. I was psyched to experience Camp Schmidt. Heck, we looked forward to it from the start of elementary school. Yeah it was still school, but we got to go on a hay ride, get scared out of our wits in the middle of some forest in the boonies, tell ghost stories around a campfire, and roast marshmallows. How exciting to a 10-year-old! There were plenty of activities and lessons going on, many involving groupwork and problem solving. We did some orienteering and explored some streams. At the end of our time there, we did the confidence course which ended with a zip line! Yahoo. Camp Schmidt was the shiznit. I only hope it's as fun now as it was back then.
