My…read moregroup and I are not professional climbers, and in fact, this was our first rock, climbing experience. As they say, go big or go home! The via ferrata was like a dream. Climbing up on the rungs on the side of a thin rock face, going high up into the fog will certainly get your adrenaline pumping. The views are spectacular and unreal. At times, it was scary, but both guides were calm and reassuring, helping us navigate this intricate course. Well worth the ticket price to experience this once in a lifetime adventure. If you are afraid of heights or are not having fun, there are two exit points that the guides will happily take you to. I recommend pushing yourself and giving this a try. This was definitely outside of my comfort zone, and I'll cherish the experience (and muscle soreness) forever!

Rock Solid. First time visit…read more All the usual feel of a ling-running guide service at a remote outpost. Dimly lit headquarters, guide tents, bathroom that beats any tented alternative, mounds of gear and stickers, and all the needed kit-- across the road from Yokum's tourist/ redneck / passing-throughs (and a bit to radically tatooed supremacist 4x4 rider). None of this matters. Got a guide for the day ('S'), who took me around the Rocks, from easy to intermediate/pumped out forearm failure, and walls and summit ridge climbs. Awesome rock, great guide, and some geology learned. Solid Rock. Beat it, be beaten. It's all the same. It ends with an ice cream sandwich at Yokum's after a mercifully short approach back on a hot day.

I've climbed with Seneca Rocks Mountain Guides on 3 occasions. The 1st was the Intro to Trad course…read more(near DC), the 2nd was the Top Ropes and Anchors course (near DC), and most recently a RoadTrip that consisted of climbing Nelson Rocks and summiting Seneca Rocks. I enjoyed all 3 of my times with this company and the RoadRTrip was especially memorable. I pitched my tent at Basecamp and it was such a wonderful experience. There is an outdoor shower, a bathroom with running water and lights, and there is an indoor/outdoor kitchen with appliances including a stove/oven and a refrigerator. Tom is amazing and very welcoming. They keep you well fed on Saturday and Sunday to fuel you for the climbs that await you. Everything is well organized and the guides are superb. They know the craft, they know the rocks/routes, and they are genuinely amazing people. I never once felt unsafe. This was also my 1st multi-pitch climb and I felt so accomplished atop Seneca Rocks South Peak- there was even a drone that captured us

We signed up for the Learn to Lead class about a month ago and had to reschedule because the…read moreweather forecast for the original weekend seemed terrible. Rescheduling was very easy, and the school was responsive via email and phone. We ended up taking the class with "Uncle Garry", how the other guides seem to call him. Garry was patient, knowledgable and ready to adapt the lesson to our knowledge and specific needs. He also seemed to truly enjoy climbing out there, and offered to stay out climbing for "as long as there was light", which was pretty awesome (given that it's winter). On Sunday, it was windy and cold (it even snowed a little), but he also took us out of the school and, again, always checked on us to make sure we had plenty of opportunities to mock lead and learn, and were also having a good time. The school is awesome. I previously thought that it would be a bit of a waste of time to spend any time learning at the school instead of out climbing, but I was wrong. Garry, Massey and Tom went over a lot of trad and lead climbing techniques that also adapted to our needs. I learned SO much. But the best part of being at the school, was seeing "Uncle Garry" wear his amazing green wool sweater. A wool sweater? You might think I'm crazy, but you had to be there. Garry owns the most magnificent piece of clothing that I've seen in my life. This green (pine colored?) sweater screamed "fall" and "nature" all over, taking us back to the origins of happiness. It's that genuine fashion that gets lost and under-appreciated in big cities and by modern civilization. I'm not surprised that Garry never seemed to get cold, that sweater looked so warm and soft that it must have felt like a hug from god himself. It also seemed to be extremely appropriate for climbing. Needless to say that the other guides did not seem to appreciate it as much. I mean, this sweater can't be comprehended by the simpler minds. Overall, great professional/knowledgable instructors. Five stars!

I hiked Seneca a couple of years ago in the summer but wanted to see it in the fall too. Rather…read morethan hike this time, we chose to ride horses. This is such an awesome experience! Our guides were fantastic. The group we were with was great also. Had good conversation, great interactions, their customer service was spot on, and just overall this was an experience I plan to redo in the future and will recommend to anyone interested. I will say that 15mins at the top isn't long so if you're wanting to go all the way up the rocks and spend some time sitting then you may want to hike instead. BUT - we took full advantage of the 15mins and our guides had no issues with us using every second to get our fill of the scenery.

We spent about 15 minutes at the top, which is not near enough if you want to explore the entire rock formation. The office at the stables smells, but the water in the restroom is so bad, you wonder where the source is. Some of the horses seemed a bit old to be carrying folks up this trail 2-3 times a day.

The peace and tranquility here is off the charts. It was a beautiful day, the temperature was about 68, and the sky was perfect. Every time I leave here I go a different way out to try and get lost, but after about two hours of exploring and finding some cool new roads and places, I made it back onto US-33 off of Glady Fork Rd by The Lodge in Alpena. What a great place to relax and unwind and learn news roads in and out. I have always loved this whole area and I always will. I'll be seeing you again very soon Spruce Knob :D

I def wish we had more time and better light to appreciate it. We saw so many deer which i loved seeing. in the end light was going too fast we made it to the lake but didn't make it to the top because sun was going down. driving those roads in low light was a bit scary. I know my husband really had wanted to be heading home much earlier and not be driving those roads in the dark. But once he realized I was wanting more exploring he went with it. I really would like to return. I wish we had spent more time in WV and skipped skyline drive. I have fell in love with WV. He kept wanting to move on to SKyline drive and down to Gatlinburg. I was wanting all WV.

Access to the preservation is on a narrow gravel road, with lots of uneven places. I do not…read morerecommend if you don't have AWD or have an aversion to narrow spaces and heights, one side of the road is a high drop off. I also recommend taking a map of the preservation and trails with you, as the signs posted can be confusing. That being said once you arrive and find your way to the trail you have selected, the trails are very well maintained and marked, the scenery is spectacular. I did notice signs posted that hunting is allowed Oct -Mar and hikers should wear bright clothing during this time, I think I would just prefer to avoid the area during this time. The area was also a WWII training ground, signs are posted for visitors not to touch any ordnance they may find.

The wilderness features many different trails and lots of primitive camping. Access is from forest road 75, a gravel and dirt road that is mostly inaccessible in winter. The trails are well marked but not blaised, which can be a problem if you intend to night hike. Water is plentiful but has high levels of iron. Some of the trails are very boggy, especially the Dobbins grade trail. You are warned,! This area is so popular that on weekends it can be very crowded. Parking is limited so go early.

The hidden gem of West Virginia!…read more If you are anywhere near or close to Spruce Knob you must come here. It's a short little hike off the road on the wet or dry side. 5 minutes. It's an amazing cave that Gandy Creek runs through. The cave itself is about 3000 feet long. It's in Osceola, but use the address I provided to find it. It's past Spruce Knob lake at the bottom of the hill. Make a left and drive until you get to a 90 degree turn. There is small parking lot on your right. There are two gates, one in front of the parking lot that is wood with a trail through a field that leads you right to the cave and one up the road about a 100 yards or so where the metal gate with the dirt road is, that will take you right to the wet entrance as well. The dry side is before you get to the 90 degree turn on your right. There are two gates. It will be the first one where you can see the tail. There are two dry exits and one wet on that side. This is a captivating cave system inside. It's pretty straight forward though, you just follow the flow of the water. The best time to go is when the water is low and during the summer months. There aren't many parts that are above your knees(I'm 6'1"), but you navigate through most of the cave walking on dirt. FYI: the waters depth can fluctuate depending on the season and rain. If it's flowing good then expect the water to be to your waist in certain areas depending on your height. Try to avoid going after heavy rains. It will take you approximately 30-40 mins to get through this cave. It's an excellent adventure! Make sure to bring a headlamp or two and extra batteries if yours is not the rechargeable kind.
