Whenever I shop for bargains in Greenhills Shopping Center or when I catch a show in the Greenhills or Promenade Cinema, I always make it a point to visit Chockfull of Nuts which is a relatively unknown bakeshop and "meryenda" store inside Shoppesville. I heard about this store from a couple of friends who have lived most of their lives in San Juan, in the vicinity of the Shopping Center. Most of my friends who went to high school in La Salle Greenhills also highly recommend this store. It has become an institution for San Juan locals who have eaten the food for close to two decades.
Chockfull of Nuts has been a staple meryenda stop for moms and titas alike, and this is where they source the hearty and filling afternoon snacks that they feed their kids when they don't have time to prepare. The store is relatively small, and it doesn't even have a seating area, but everything that is good to eat can be eaten right on the counter or the small surface jutting from an adjacent wall. I always get the taisan slice, a sweet and custardy slice of pastry that reminds me a lot of inipit. The cuapao is also always such a treat. A visit wouldn't be complete without the siomai, which I just can't stop eating. They also have chocolatey treats such as choco cupcakes and slices of moist chocolate cake. The friendly manangs would also gladly pack the goodies to go so that you can share and enjoy them with family or friends. read more
