The teachers are AMAZING. Every one of them. Usually classes run from 9am- noon with a break in between each session. 1st 90min or so is grammar and second session is conversation. During one of our conversation classes, our teacher took us to a restaurant to practice ordering and learning menu items and utensils. If you arrive at 8am, yoga classes are included in your tuition! Afternoons are free to explore or go to the beach, but the school usually hosts an early evening activity to promote a sense of community and learn about the culture. Monday was a Mexican art class, Tuesday we played Lotteria, similar to bingo/matching and practiced our vocabulary with the images. Wednesday evening there was an optional (separate cost) activity of going to Muyil for a flotilla in the canals of the Muyil laguna, and a visit to the (small) ruins. It was an amazing side trip! Then we returned to the school for a salsa lesson which was really fun, despite my two left feet! Thursday was a cooking class on how to make mole. Friday was our last day of school and we had a mini graduation ceremony and a taco party! Saturday was another optional all day trip to Bacarat to see the lagoon of 7 colors, but it was POURING rain most of the time. But we were with such a fun group, we made the most of it, and found the silver lining to every cloud! I have such fond moments of everyone there and made some amazing new friends! Definitely check out Tulum, and while you are there, get your learn on at Meztli!

Without making any paper waste, my Spanish was quadrupled in just 3 weeks. The classes are small, outrageously fun and conversational. I took advantage of the free yoga every morning, the evening culture classes, the weekend optional excursions and most importantly the host family living arrangements. It was, hands down, the most valuable part of the experience. The host family lived near and gave me a bicycle for the duration of my stay. The hosts were warm, welcoming, accommodating and made Mexican food from scratch every single day. My vocabulary blossomed during these family meals, where the human experience is so universal, you take part in these conversations and next thing you know, you're fluent. Cannot speak highly enough of the Meztli School for putting this all together.

I especially loved the Mayan influence that was weaved into the stories and recipes that our group explored. We already have plans for a dinner party back home to share with friends. I purchased our classes about two months in advance online and was easily able to connect with Lilly and share my shellfish allergy ahead of time. Our classes were $75 each and included a mezcal tasting and hands on experience leading us through homemade tortilla making and more than five other recipes like beans, plantains, Oaaxan cheese in salsa and many more. It's important to note that this meal was one of the tastiest, most interesting and filling from our trip. Before we kicked off the class, Lilly provided a history lesson and led us through the garden to see some of the ingredients up close. We had eight folks on our class and the setup and flow of everything made the divided experiences even and fun every step of the way. Funny enough, Lilly even offered to FaceTime with us upon returning home to run through the recipes and share tips! The only part of the experience that threw us off was arriving to the marked location and being told we would load into cars and go elsewhere. At first, we were the only two women there and Lilly was not which made the interaction hesitant on our end to ya know, hop in cars with strangers and go to the jungle ten minutes outside of town It all worked out beautifully but it might be worth including in the preparation emails. You cannot go wrong with this experience and it is worth every penny. Thank you so much, Lilly and family!

They even emailed us two of the recipes they made for us which we loved and asked for. Chef Marco put his own spin on some of his dishes. "Marcoritas" (margaritas) and chilaquiles. Highly recommend this wonderful couple.

I know Sonia from when she lived in Portland and was so looking forward to the authentic meal we planned via E-mail. Their web site will give you some set menus and prices, but they are more then happy to mix up various items and give you a total price for it. Marco made us his famous Chicken Mole, that was out of this world (27 ingredients just in the sauce), along with fresh made pork quesadilla, Guacamole, Pico de Gallo, Tortilla Chips, Salsa verde, Green Rice, Black Beans, Jícama & Cucumber Salsa, Honey Drizzled Fruit, Lightly Sprinkled w/ Chili Powder And they also made us a pitcher each of sangria & super strong yummy "Marco-ritas". First off, the portions were enough that we had a full 2nd dinner as leftovers the next night, making the cost per person a very good deal. The chicken in the mole was 4 huge boneless, skinless all white breast that were plump and moist and the Mole sauce is generously portioned over and around the beasts. All the other sides were excellent!!! The sangria was refreshing and the "Marco-ritas.... well look out, they pack a punch!!! Sonia ices the pitcher so that you get many healthy portions that took us days to finish!!! After Marco & Sonia prepared our dinner they sat down with us for a chat to catch up and it is easy to see how much they enjoy meeting and cooking for small and large groups and helping to make you vacation fun, easy and memorable. Going to restaurants is nice, but having Doña Sonia and Chef Marco come to your condo is such a special treat I can't recommend it enough!! Oh and BTW, their salsa is great on hot dogs!!
