Lively isn't halfway describing this place, madhouse is more like it! You start at the kiosk and you don't pick your flavors of gelato, just the type. Then you wait in line for them to call your number and people are jumping in front of you as though that will get their number called first (spoiler alert: it doesn't). But it is quite hectic and if you ordered cake too, that's at a separate counter and takes a crazy amount of time for a piece of semi-dry cake. Their special marocchino is a slightly bigger macchiato served in a glass cup with chocolate sauce inside. In other circumstances I would have been happy of this surprise, but today I wanted to avoid extra sugars and carbs, so i was not as happy as I should have been. I also wanted to limit to he carbs of the other person, but the espresso came with a light cookie. Again, a nice touch, but in the wrong moment. Whatever, those were my constraints, not their fault. I stopped in after looking at the Galleria D'Italia, a space with free exhibits owned by Banca d'Intesa. This caffe has a warm wood interior. You may order at your table any of the food or drinks and the waitstaff will bring it to you. I spent a countless number of times at de Canto because I had just window-shopped along the Via Montenapoleone or had visited Rizzoli in the Galleria nearby or just wanted an oasis of quiet in this mad, chaotic city that was away from the crowds. There is no copperto so you don't pay extra to sit or stand. It's copperto free! I enjoyed having a cup of tea in each visit. If you order a coffee, you get a small piece of Venchi chocolate - a nice treat! Tired from shopping, from visiting the Duomo, from your crazy co-workers or sweetheart who has been nagging you all day, stop by de Canto. You will leave refreshed and feeling very zen.
