You can't pass up getting some Mexican chocolates in Mexico, since, after all, Mexico gave the world chocolate. The lady helping us super patient, friendly, and great. She knew every little chocolate they had on display, and how to describe the flavor. She was also key in recommending which of their chocolates paired with mezcal they also sell, and you know what, she was absolutely correct in the pairings. The mezcal I bought here was also excellent and the real deal, not mass marketed; about half way between a moonshined mezcal and a commercialized one. If you love chocolate and enjoy mezcal, what better store than one in Guanajuato that sells authentic quality artisanal products of the region. A nice experience.

It was the place that chef Pati Jinich proclaimed as the best churro purveyor in town on her PBS TV series. Located just a block east of the city's social hub, Jardín Allende, the cafe was quite chaotic on early Saturday evening. No surprise there was a lengthy queue. While it was moving quickly, the menu was nowhere to be seen. By the time we got to the counter, I just improvised our order on the spot. We went with a couple of the MX$120 French Chocolate sets which afforded us both a Hot Chocolate and a Cajeta-Flled Churro. We added two MX$11 Plain Churros just because we wanted to try their signature item. The advantage lies in the freshness. The churros come right out of the fryer and into the bowl dusted with sugar and cinnamon. The contrast between the crispy, sweet exterior and the soft dough is what makes the churro stand out. The cajeta added sweet indulgence, but truth be told, the plain version was decadent enough on its own (Photo 9). This was especially true when we dipped the churros into the rich, piping hot chocolate (Photo 8). Luckily, we were able to snag a cafe table that became available. It was only when we sat down that we noticed the full extent of their menu which includes empanadas, enchiladas, and Mexican breakfast plates. We also saw all the framed posters and magazine covers on the walls and realized they all featured the owner, famous soap opera actress Margarita Gralia, Mexico's answer to Susan Lucci. The chocolate is piping hot, and you can enjoy it sitting somewhere by the plaza. My partner really likes his churros filled, so we tried a few varieties. We tried rompope (like a spiked eggnog), which was creamy and had a nice kick. Later tried the cajeta (goat milk caramel), and my boyfriend the lechera (like a condensed milk)- the cajeta was lighter and sweeter than I expected. I think our fav was actually the rompope, which we also hadn't seen made elsewhere. Honestly, there's nothing like a fresh fried churro. When in doubt just grab a bag of the plain. You can see them frying them to order, and with huge pots of chocolate. I recommend the chocolate with milk over the one with water. Might as well go all in. The churros are crisp and sugary on the outside and a little moist in the inside. Definitely an institution.

The outer shells are whisper thin, reflecting true skill on the part of those casting the chocolate. The fruit fillings are bright and sharp and in the multi-flavored fillings the individual flavors meld harmoniously but are each distinctly recognizable. Highly recommended. The cafe is small with both indoor and outdoor seating. Situated on a quiet, leafy corner of Avenida Amsterdam it's a wonderful place to start the with coffee or an indulgent mocha and pastry. I wish they offered their cakes by the slice as I've never been a big fan of laminated pastry but stuff anything with gianduja and it's bound to rock. N.B. The danish is actually a cruffin made from croissant dough but it's buttery and well laminated and unless you're a weird chocolate hater you'll be happy.

The spot is so cute in the inside it has a few places to sit and it's beautifully decorated with local artisan pieces. There is various types of hot chocolate you can enjoy. I love their semi-sweet. My mom just brought some back from there that's how I remembered to write this. The people were so hospitable. The fact that they had a gluten free bread cake for me to enjoy alongside the chocolate was the best. When I bit into the soft, creamy corn bread cake it made my heart burst of happiness. I could not tell it was any other kind of bread. Highly recommend. Do your research on this place because there's quite a bit of tourist spots around.
