FTR? Don't mind if I do! Chongo's is an awesome-sauce fresh produce market in the Crossroads Farmers Market. There was all kinds of food and even a lady who could really get your juices flowing. For real! Over by the back counter, they sell freshly made carrot, beet and apple juice. If you want your own jug of just carrot juice because you don't see any in the fridge, no problemo! Just ask and it shall be yours. I wandered the aisles for awhile with my little roller plastic basket. They've got lots of 'em, you can use one too. I piled it up with purple potatoes (making a purple stew, whip-whip, whip-whip), roma tomatoes, shallots, avocado, mangoes, and cabbage. Not to worry, I didn't use that all in one dish, although random ingredients from the farmers market could make for a fun cooking experiment. In total, $27.32. A little shocked at the final tally, I must say. I thought it was going to be more! Except it wasn't. I'm now under the impression that produce from the farmers market is cheaper (and waaaaay more full of nutrients, although that's gotta be a given) than whatever stuff I buy at the grocery store. Chongo's Market is an interesting little place. While in the summer, when a lot of the fruits and vegetables are in season in Alberta and BC, it can be pretty great. However, from looking around at the boxes the fruit and veggies come from, and having friends who have worked there in the past, a lot of the produce seems to come from the same suppliers as big box grocery stores. I am a much bigger fan of retailers who can actually vouch for the sources of their food. I am much more inclined to visit Souto Farms at the Calgary Farmer's Market, or Sunnyside Natural Market if I want to be sure of where my produce came from. read more

Everytime I come to Chongos Produce Market I am met with helpful staff and the most colorful and fresh produce around. This place is so reasonable for its prices, and the fresh salsa, guacamole, and bruscetta the girls in the back of the store make fresh daily is to die for. They have started with fresh juices as well and the best part is you dont have to buy what is made...grab some fruit and veggies take it to the back counter and let the girls work their magic. Went here today and wow.. total gong show! There were so many people that it felt like walking the red mile during the playoffs! I managed to get to the back to pick up the one thing I wanted and craved.the infamous Chongo's guac! And as people reached in front of me like I wasn't even there, I scored some mango salsa and Travis' black bean salsa. The girl at the back counter rang me through right away and I clawed my way through the throes of people i with their big bellies and baby strollers and totally oblivious to anyone but their own surroundings. But after trying all of my treasures when I got home.. it was 100% worth it. All 3 items are to die for! I would wait 2 hrs in line for Travis's salsa! JUST DON'T GO ON A LONG WEEKEND OR BRING YOUR NICE VEHICLE!!! read more

I had a very bad experience with the head cashier, but the owner made the whole experience better. I was really upset at first, but he handled it perfectly. I would give them another chance. If i do see the cashier again, I will go to another one..I didnt do anything to her to deserve a bad treatment...i hope my next visit will be better...their bruchetta is awesome...highly recommended. read more

Always full of fruit and vegetables that are (IMO) much fresher and brighter than your average grocery store fare. This place is always busy (less so for us early risers) but they have about 27 check out counters spread around so wait time at the tills is pretty short. They also have great salsas and guacamole made fresh in store. I have been a regular customer here since the market moved from crossroads and they have always great selection and great quality. read more

This market is worth every penny and big cheers to the young lady at the back till near the salsa table that is always yelling "I can help you here, no line up". I love to see a young person that is actually willing to work her butt off, good for you Missy! All of the salsas are good and the quac. is a little heavy on garlic but still good. The fresh herbs are always outstanding but what I really appreciate is that when I get the produce home it lasts and I am never disappointed with quality. read more

Guacamole - need I say more! This place makes the only guacamole I will eat. You've never had guacamole until you've had Chongo's guacamole!!! I went here a few years ago and they were giving away samples of it and I was reluctant - I never liked the stuff before and much to my very pleasant surprise it was chunky and has other stuff in it, but I decided to try it after all. Yummmmmm!!!!! Was I ever glad I did!!! It was really funny but I turned those guacamole samples practically in to a meal and couldn't stop eating it! There's a zing to this guacamole so be careful if you don't like spicy too much as there's jalapeño or something in there - they wouldn't tell me what all goes into their Guacamole or nutrition facts, weird because some people have diets and need to watch exactly what they're eating and calories. I've reached out to them with no response. I go here regularly and buy the tortillas & guacamole for the most part. You have to go on a Friday or Saturday to get your fill because if you go on a Sunday they might be sold out because it's a to commodity!!! Anyone who's ever tried it knows a good thing when they've found it! They have a great selection of fresh produce and it doesn't matter what time of year you go, in the winter obviously much of what they're selling is grown locally or I don't think it is, please correct me if I'm wrong.
