We used Chowgirls Catering for our agency holiday party this week and they were an absolute hit! From planning to execution, the staff was wonderful and helpful. They helped us plan the perfect menu of small bites, while taking in our feedback about our guests. Delivery, setup and takedown was perfectly on time and Nicole was a pleasure to talk with and work with! The food from Chowgirls is phenomenal! The whole agency was raving and asking where it was from - we even had a couple of people want to use them for their upcoming celebrations! I cannot recommend Chowgirls highly enough. We used them for two events for our wedding weekend and things could not have gone better. From the beginning they were a delight to communicate with, and incredibly open to changes on the menu and helping us figure out what we needed to do to make everything go perfectly. At both events, the staff were wonderful--so efficient and great with the guests. They just handled everything and we didn't have to worry about anything. Plus the food was ridiculously good. The Chowgirls catered our daughter's engagement party for 70. My daughter is very particular and Chowgirls ticked every box. The food was excellent, lots of compliments from our guests. My wife and I attended the Guthrie this evening to discover Chowgirls Catering now has the concession contract. Our experience with Chowgirls service was awful. Intermissions are only 15 minutes so concessions need to be simple, efficient, and staffed by service focused people. Not only was service before the show slow and expensive, at intermissions my wife and I were second in line and it took five minutes to place and pay for our order, including the tip the staff was keen to collect. But then, they didn't have the inventory to fulfill the order and sent me to the level five bar to pick up my order. The lines were even worse up there. We wound up having to take our seats for the second half of the play with receiving the order we paid for. Awful service, bad business model, and a poor fit for concessions work. If yelp let me give out a zero, Chowgirls certainly would have earned it from me tonight. read more

There is a reason Chow Girls gets 5 star reviews. The food is fantastic. The presentation is artful. The staff is top knotch, on time, friendly, respectful of the venue, and knows what to do. Chowgirls you have ruined me for the ordinary! I only wish they could cater my everyday life. I've been to two events catered by Chowgirls and confess I mostly looked forward to going because of the food. Everything they use is eco friendly, reasonably priced, & they compost everything that would be thrown out. They have a large menu to choose from including fresh squeezed limeade, smoked salmon, Indian curry, and cheesecake (which obviously don't go together unless you're pregnant) I only wish they would open a restaurant. read more

Having been thoroughly wowed with The Nick and Elise S. Wedding, I had made a note that I wanted Chowgirls for my Wedding someday. Turns out, that's exactly what I got. It was difficult finding the perfect place they were allowed to serve at, but after settling that detail, the rest was a breeze. I started emailing them about 2 weeks after my engagement and they were always willing to chat and change ideas. We wanted a Crepe Bar, and Chowgirls had never done something quite like that. But after discussions, tastings, more discussions, and independent epiphanies on both sides, we came up with the perfect arrangement. Throughout the process, Leah was always willing to help plan, change plans, remind us, warn us, etc. about the decisions we were making. As this was the first party either of us had held for 125ish people, it was quite welcome. It is a local and organic caterer, so you have to be mindful of that- but as it was such good food and a good ethos, I had no problem paying for something that I wanted as opposed to the lame, sears-wedding fair of meat, potatoes, and green beans. The food was a big hit and I still have been getting complements on the rumaki and the crepes. Fantastic. read more

Amazing, amazing, amazing! Service, quality, and flexibility could not be beat! Chowgirls made planning a wedding remotely so much easier. The food: We requested many items from the menu, as well as a few tweaks to make our vision of a gourmet mini burger bar come together. They whipped up the most amazing versions of the burger combos we had in mind - 2 different themes and one classic. We also had roasted veggies, a salad, and tater tots. Guests flipped (pun intended) over the burgers, and I ate 3 myself (the bride!). The presentation of both appetizers and dinner buffet were beautiful. They give you the perfect combination of creativity and high quality food. The service: Megan and her team were a pleasure to work with. They travelled 2 hours outside Minneapolis for this wedding, and made the smaller kitchen work easily. She accommodated a vegan guest, and brought us (bride and groom) a second round of burgers just in case we didn't have a chance to get more. Color me impressed with an operation like Chowgirls, and on my first trip to Minnesota no less! They came to cater my friend's graduation party and were a class act from start to finish - from the very start, even, since I got the down low from my friend who worked with them. The woman who helped her to set up the day was professional, kind and helpful, and crafted a menu with all of the different dietary needs of our group with care and creativity. The meal they arrived at was not readily identifiable as largely vegan or gluten free, but filled both of those needs in spades. I think my friend may have over-ordered, which was fine by us, since we got to sample (at the start) and (eventually) stuff our faces with delicacies such as grilled veggies with spiced aioli, red curry with seasoned rice, perfectly grilled chicken and beef skewers, polenta cakes with goat cheese and mushroom pate on crostini. Everything I tried was perfect, and I kept going back for more. And Chowgirls made it easy by coming to do set up before the party and arriving the next day to collect all of the dishes (we didn't even have to wash them!) All in all, a fantastic job. Chowgirls (Heidi) catered our recent farm wedding, and it was phenomenal. Seriously--the food was SO good that even those relatives who were probably eager to roll their eyes at our "local, organic" fare, couldn't stop talking about the food. It was excellent, and it looked beautiful too. It couldn't have been easy to negotiate our whole set-up-- since we had hired a couple local waiters that they didn't know in advance, and the farm kitchen was probably a little rustic--but it was no match for these guys. The ONLY problem we had, which I didn't learn about until later, is that we ran out of the chicken and salmon selections before the last few tables had gone. I felt bad knowing that-- obviously it's a major party foul. But Chowgirls has encouraged me to call them to work something out (discount?)--we'll see how it goes. And I'm sure they'll adjust their food/people ratio so that it doesn't happen again. read more

Part of my job is to assemble the various pieces needed for rockin' parties from time to time. When my boss said she wanted a caterer for her family's birthday party, the Chowgirls immediately sprung to mind. For such a last minute request, the Chowgirls were total pros from start to finish. Caitlin put together a tasty menu, rented dishes and linens, and even had a driver available to set up and tear down - on the holiday this past Monday. In my many years of living in the Twin Cities and working downtown, I've had more catered food then I care to recall - whether corporate events, luncheons, conferences, weddings, fundraising galas, etc. And nearly every single caterer has left me entirely underwhelmed. Most companies seem to offer food that seems focused on the ability to get massive amounts of food to lots of people in as short of a time as possible. And then came Chowgirls. AHHHHH Chowgirls. You had me at yee-ha! I've managed to be lucky enough to now be to enough events where I've said "oh my gosh - who catered this?" to have figured out that Chowgirls seems magically able to make insanely delicious food that never ever tastes as though it's been mass-produced. Their food is consistently presented beautifully and includes staples and creative items. I always find myself wishing I could grab some to-go boxes to wrap up a bunch of their stuff and take it home with me. And the fact that I've never EVER had that sense with anyone else's catered food made me feel like I finally ought to get over here to do a review of these folks. Based on the reviews, it looks like a lot of folks hire them to do weddings, but I have been lucky enough to run the gamut of events that they've catered. We had decided to go with Chowgirls due to great reviews of it being the best wedding caterer in the twin cities area. Unfortunately, COVID came and we decided that we would need to downsize our wedding to make it as safe as possible, and had a 30 guest wedding on August 16th 2020. We reached out to Chowgirls to see if it was possible, and only then did we find out that Chowgirls decided that they were no longer catering but would offer drop off food services. I was appalled at the lack of communication, as we heard nothing about these changes and only found out when we asked. I tried giving them the benefit of the doubt as COVID was hard on everyone, and asked them to come up with a new proposal given the circumstances. They gave us a proposal that seemed to be generic, as it did not take into the consideration of the foods we had wanted when we met with them for the tasting. When we asked why that is the case, they then showed us an updated menu saying that some of the food items were no longer available. I would have appreciated more if they told us which food items were unavailable and have us choose a substitute rather than giving us a generic proposal with no explanation until we asked about it. They also told us that they are no longer renting out their chinaware for the ceremony and would use fancy disposable ones. Fortunately, I did not trust them at all by that point and asked them for a picture. They were the ugliest plates I had seen, so I was able to tell them that we'll take care of the plate settings on our end. The whole experience with Chowgirls felt like it was filled with endless traps that you have to find and jump through. We had to be the ones to recognize the problem before they would "try" to fix it. The last straw was that they didn't even serve us the main dish that we wanted. We asked for the sugar brined chicken that we had at the tasting (which cost $100 per person), which had included boned in chicken drumsticks etc. At the wedding, we got a sad piece of chicken breast. When I asked what happened, they said they forgot that we wanted the boned in version. COVID had made weddings hard enough to plan safely. Fortunately, we were able to have a beautiful wedding with our loved ones in Minnesota. However, Chowgirls caused almost all of my problems, and was the only part of the wedding I wish I could do over. The only nice thing I can say about them was that their seasonal special cake tasted good.... Addendum: I received a call from Chowgirls following this review to ask me about the things that went wrong. They apologized and said that this is not the way they usually do things. They also refunded their service charge and the charge for the chicken, which amounted to approximately $760. read more

Fantastic food, difficult to get everything sorted in the months leading up to the wedding. Pro tip: Ask your questions via email, so you can circle-back to their response a few months later if something has gone amiss just before your wedding/event. (+) Let's start with the positive - 1. Their food is really, really great. In our buffet we had: the green goddess salad, company potatoes, collard greens, roasted vegetables, brown-sugar brined chicken (both bone-in and breast) and steak sirloin. Our guests (some of whom are quite picky, and some that were comparing it to swarays they've attended in Beverly Hills) loved the food. It was delicious!! 2. The servers and bartenders were really friendly, but not over-doing it (basically, they were awesome at their jobs). 3. We didn't expect them to make so much effort with the appetizer platters the servers carried around the cocktail hour - they were beautiful! Each one was copper (I think) and had a single flower on it. Amazing!! (+/-) Some things that didn't go so well, but weren't the end of the world - (1) The steak at the tasting was cold, so it was hard to evaluate it. I think it was warm on the day-of, so that's a plus. (2) They switched ice cream vendors between our contract and our event, so we ended up having a lot of confusion about if Izzy's (local MN ice cream maker) would be our ice cream, or Ben & Jerrys (not what we were going for). Since we had a copy of the proposal with Izzy's on it, they honored that, so turned out to be fine. (3) Last, we asked about bread and butter being on the tables back in November. We're glad we asked and got a response in email, because when it wasn't in a proposal close to the wedding date we forwarded the email from Chowgirls confirming that their buffet service comes with bread & butter at no additional charge, and that got put back into the contract. (-) The most annoying things were: (1) We found price errors in nearly every revision of their proposal. For this one, if you're willing to review each proposal with a fine-tooth comb (our wedding planner found some too), they'll edit it to make it right - just know you're going to need to put in the time to look it all over carefully each time. (I think we had over 20 revisions in the 9 months of planning we did with them leading up to the wedding.) (2) The flavors you taste at the tasting may not be available on your date. I'll admit this one made me livid - we were not told until after our tasting. We were given 3 flavors of cake to try at our tasting in December for our wedding cake and we loved, loved, loved the Blood Orange. When we gave our feedback on the flavors we were told that since our wedding was in September, that flavor may not be available. Not a definite one way or the other, and not what we expected. Chowgirls' response was that they serve what's in-season, but I was really blown away that they would give us food at the tasting that wouldn't be available for our wedding. It took a lot of prodding and convincing (many thanks to our wedding planner!) but we did end up getting a blood orange wedding cake. So...stick to your guns? read more

We booked Chowgirls two weeks before a very important corporate event. They were extremely attentive and flexible when building the menu. They were consistently responsive before, during, and after the event. I try to operate with a high level of execellence, and Chowgirls always seemed to be 2 steps ahead of me (which is not an easy task). Our particular menu had unique allergy considerations and Chowgirls managed to serve a spread that did not compromise. The ingredients were creative, fresh, and decadent. The onsite staff was professional, fun, and extremely attentive and flexible. I cannot wait to host another event so I can book Chowgirls again just to see what other amazing dishes they come up with. read more

we did all the tasting (and paid for them and desserts) we booked chowgirls a year in advance for our daughter's 9/20 wedding. they canceled 6 weeks out saying they didn't have the staff due to covid. we fortunately found another company to cater the wedding which was in fact much better afood nd more responsive. why did our venue know that cowgirls cancelled before telling us thru the planner at showgirls. we did get a full refund but would not recommend. read more

We had these folks cater our all-vegan wedding reception. They did a fabulous job! A large majority of our guests are omnivores but they had uniformly terrific things to say about the Chowgirls' dishes. Note that the Chowgirls do offer meaty catering as well, but they were very helpful with our meal planning, and had lots of creative suggestions. The price was right too. We didn't have them fully staff our reception but they were prompt in delivery and setup. read more

FANTASTIC! My fiance (now husband) googled MN caterers and came across Chowgirls. He was curious based on their logo. After meeting with them and having a tasting, we chose Chowgirls immediately for our wedding. We didn't even bother with anyone else...they were so wonderful...we didn't find it necessary to get any other catering estimate. The options they provided us were simple, yet so tasty. I loved that they were organic and local. We definitely wanted good food for our small, intimate (80ish guests) wedding. They were very professional. Many of our guests complimented us on our caterer - the food was amazing! We had extra food, not a lot, but enough that our friends and I ate it the next day and it was just as tasty as on the wedding day. They catered a party for some wonderful friends of ours. There were 100+ guest. The food was great, but the buffet line was poorly planned. Only a single food line. So an B+ for food. An F for planning. These guys are pros and should have advised our friends that this was not a good idea. We did not actually sit down to eat until well after 9:30 which can turn some exceptionally delightful people into bears. I saw it happen. I was one of them. read more

I would not recommend this place to anyone. Used it for a school event. Ordered $1000 worth of food, ended up getting what looked like $200 worth (maybe 4-5 small trays?). They said it would be enough for a light snack for the close to 100 people attending our event. It ended up being enough for maybe 30-40 people to have a very light snack. (that $1000 got us mostly celery sticks) During the end of the event we called to let them know that we were cleaning soon and they could pick their equipment up at X time. The person replied in a very rude way that they would not be cleaning our mess. (we didn't ask him to...) I usually don't complain much but the experience here was so bad I had to say something. read more

Phenomenal food and wonderful staff! After our taste testing for our wedding we wanted so badly to hire them. However, the price was a bit to high for our backyard wedding budget.
