Found this gem after our river tubing adventure got postponed due to high water levels and can't say I was upset about it - this is such a neat little hidden park in Charlottesville. It has its own "beach," its own dock (lots of fun can be had on that dock!) - bring your speaker, floats, coolers, a few towels, your refreshments, and get those super cool dive moves in action! We were also told that there was a fee to get in (something like $5) but when we got there, we were surprised to see that we could enjoy this lovely lake for free, so bonus points! Really nice spot if you're looking for a chill day. read more

Chris Greene is a large Albemarle County Park in The northern section of the county. It has multiple activities available. Groups can rent shelters, hike the trails, enjoy the swimming beach (with lifeguards), kayak in Chris Greene Lake or fish with a non-gasoline engine. The park also has a large dog park with lake access. We typically use the trails and have used the dog park in the past. The dog park is hit or miss. There are unattentive owners at times who don't watch their dog or pick up after them. I have seen a tussle or two that require mediation. We obviously like it when they park if empty and our dog can run off leash without others around. Our more recent pups have not been water dogs do the lake doesn't sway me. With that being said, I am taking off a star due to the seemingly chronic algae issues that plague the lake. It seems to be closed off often from swimmers, fishermen (and women). There is a per car fee to use the park between Memorial Day and Labor Day. If you work for the county you can be admitted free. read more

Huge enclosed dog park with a beach for the pups to play in the water. A terrific find so we will be back next time we are in the area camping. It is $3 per person admission and the dog park is not easily found the sign is tiny. read more

TOTAL DOG HEAVEN. My pup Otis and I frequent the dog parks in town around Charlottesville a few times a week, and decided to take a little winter adventure up to Chris Greene Lake this past weekend. Despite being VERY muddy (everywhere is muddy right now because of all of the rain and snow!), it was absolutely awesome. As soon as we arrived at the dog park area at Chris Greene, which is a short and pretty walk through the woods from the parking area, Otis went NUTS! There's a ton of space to romp, and I think the dogs really love the added fun of dodging in and out of the many trees. I've never seen Otis run so much at a dog park, and despite the cold and ice on the lake he jumped right in. This place will be perfect when the weather is warmer and the dogs really want to swim! It also offers what no other dog parks have: total shade, which will come in handy in July and August! I did get a little turned around leaving the park - there are two paths and I couldn't remember which one we came in on. I took the wrong one, but it just took me on a pleasant little loop before arriving back at the parking area. For the direct exit, take the path on the right. I also think it's important to note that this park is big and your pooch can get pretty far away from you at any given time. I try to stay pretty close to my guy just in case he encounters a grumpy-pants-pup, and that feels pretty hard to do here. Still, like most dog parks around town, the owners were all pretty keyed into their dogs behaviors and we didn't have any problems. read more

I heard about CGL through the dog-vine in town! This place is a relatively large scale fenced in dog park that combines dog-only: lake access, small beach area, and a portion of wooded area for your pups. This is one of the best places to take your dog during the summer since the entire fenced off area is dedicated solely for dog use. From what I've seen it's a pretty generous amount of space for your dog to play, swim, and wander within a safe proximity. Access to the dog park is located in the main parking lot for the park. Look for the wood dog park signs for the entrance to the trail. You will need to walk into the woods to locate the dog park. While this is a lovely place to off leash (Yes! A large haven for off leash!) please remain vigilant of your dogs as they interact with other dogs and humans. The pups here are pretty nice for the most part (as are their humans) but from time to time we've been surprised by ornery dogs and standoffish dog owners. Also, be aware this is a poop magnet for folks who don't pick up. Tread carefully as you play! read more

Loved this place! We brought the baby and he had a lot of fun. The beach area is divided to a child safe section and a normal deeper side. We stayed on the right side for the kiddo. He enjoyed the mushroom fountain in the water its pretty big 7-8 adults fit under it. We brought lunch and ate under shaded trees, they're everywhere so no needing to look too far. Theres an open room where around 4 tables are and you can eat there as well. Theres so much green open space. It's a great spot to get away for a bit and feel like youre someplace farther than just 15min from home. You can rent a canoe for a bit, looked like a lot of fun. Will definitely come back and explore more of the place, theres a lot more to see!! read more

Really nice place to ride a canoe and swim

The dog park at Chris Greene Lake is much talked about in puppy circles, so we decided to bring our pup for a visit. The dog park offers the unique opportunity for dogs to not only play together but also to swim in the lake. There is a large one acre fenced in area for dogs to room--it is great on hot days because it is super shaded by trees. The dogs are allowed to swim freely. I was a little nervous at first about letting our puppy in the water, but she had such a blast! They do not have water like they do at the dog park at Darden Towe, so you do have to bring your own. My pup likes to drink the lake water, but it's not really good for her. Note, you are not able to swim side by side with your dog, and dogs are only allowed in the dog park. read more

This is an amazing park with a lot to do. I personally frequent this park often to visit the dog park. The park is unlike any other I've been too. It is right up against the lake so your fur babies can swim all they want. There are plenty of benches in the park and plenty of shade for humans and dogs. If you get to the park before 10 there is no entrance fee. Highly recommend this dog park. And the beach is nice too! read more

I stayed in Charlottesville for a month in the summer of 2010. I brought my kids to Chris Greene Lake several times during that time and it was lovely. It is easy to get to and not too expensive. There is plenty of sand to set up a blanket and the water is shallow enough at the shoreline that you feel comfortable watching the kids wade around from the beach. There is a small play area with a shooting fountain and the kids LOVED sitting in the shallow water and having little fishes swim up to them. I would have given 5 stars but for the complete lack of shade (not a major problem, as you ARE at a beach )and for how busy it can get when campers arrive. The lifeguards are watchful and QUITE serious about safety. My advice is too bring LOTS of bottled water and LOTS of sunblock and HAVE FUN!!!! read more
