As wildlife preserves go, this one had a lot of wildlife. Conditions vary of course, but there were a couple more hours worth of trails I didn't get to. Near the entrance were some buildings, including a water station and primitive bathrooms. People seemed to come for a variety of reasons.

It's easy to forget that a major roadway runs along the length of the park because it's almost hidden behind a tree line. The park has one of two splash pads in the city, a playground for bigs and tinies and a basketball half court. Finally, I love that the park has plenty of seating (including a pavilion) so either hosting a birthday party or simply monitoring rambunctious children is easy to do. The ONLY drawback to this little diamond of a park is the parking. The lot is uber tiny with only a few spaces and very little space to navigate even if you score a parking spot. Nutshell: It's a great place to come but you may want to come early or come on foot.

I don't know why park staff in Virginia keep building disc golf as no one really plays this sport and it spoils the nature trails. You can hear noise such as back up sounds from trucks while in the park from businesses outside the park. Entrance is strange and can be missed if you unfamiliar with the park. There is a recycling center near the entrance.

There are a ton of trails, picnic tables, playgrounds for the kiddos, & a stream that runs all the way through the park. It's a great spot to take family photos and to enjoy one with nature! We love taking our dogs & letting them play in the stream. We have only gone to the park during the fall/winter time, so I can only assume how busy it is in the summer. The trails are dog friendly & we always stumble upon a new trail when visiting (who wants to do the same trail over & over again? Not me!). If you bring the doggies, make sure to also pack a towel & some water. There is no dedicated water station for them. I can't recall if there are poop stations along the trails, so bring those too! I also recommend calling the park ahead of time to see if they are open. There are times after a heavy rainfall that the stream is too high to cross with a vehicle. In this case, you'll have to park on the outside of the park. Another big thing is you have to drive pass an apartment complex (kinda weird I know) in order to enter the park. Don't be alarmed though! You will definitely see the park entrance if you keep going. I give this park a 5 star because it never disappoints. There is always something to do & my fur babies love it. I will definitely be back & can't wait to check it out in the summer! If you are in the Fredericksburg area, go to Alum Spring Park & enjoy the beautiful nature views!

Anyone…read morereading the name and expecting to end up on the river is going to find that the bluffs here are prohibitively steep, and if you fell down off the largely unfenced rim trail and somehow survived, you'd be on train tracks. The trains are periodically audible through the greenery but are hard to see. Nonetheless, the park has some nice vistas and handy facilities, and it is free.
