The Gurdwara was named after Guru Nanak Dev Ji. At the time, the Gurdwara was one of the biggest in the UK. The Sangat (congregation) grew very rapidly as this was one of only 2 Gurdwaras in Bradford. The Hall was often full to capacity between 1975 and 1978; and a lot of good work was undertaken with children many becoming proficient in reading Gurbani (the Sikh scriptures). Punjabi language classes were taught 7 days a week and school numbers exceeded 100 at the weekends. Akhand Paaths (48 hour, non-stop recitation of the Sikh scripture) and Gurpurbs (birthdays of the Gurus) were particularly well attended with many families staying overnight during Akhand Paats. An arson attack in 1986 resulted in the main Divaan (prayer) hall being destroyed. It is served by Cathedral Supertram stop, which is one of three stations on the whole network to serve all the tram lines, it is within walking distance of The Moor, Orchard Square, Fargate etc. This makes it a rather cool place to mark my 2300th Yelp review. The site has been home to many Catholic symbols, churches and places of worship since the 12th century to as far as 1966, so the process of this historic, the cathedral has developed over so many years, it does, however, seem slightly more modern than other cathedrals, and not in a good way, it lacks the old, beautiful infrastructure compared to other Cathedrals, which makes it less impressive compared to Westminster and York's alternatives for examples, but still for sure doesn't make it unimpressive. It is a Grade I listed building, one of five in the city of Sheffield which includes the town hall. More information to make this a historic site could be used after all this has been home to worship for over 1000 years which is an impressive feet not reached by most. Although it isn't up there with the most beautiful and impressive Cathedrals of the UK, it still is a nice, historic building right in the centre of Sheffield, making it one of the nicer views on the entire Supertram network as well. 3* - Pretty much average but an asset for a small city like South Yorkshire's Sheffield.

One of the lesser English cathedrals…read more On my journeys in Britain I have been to many impressive cathedrals: Liverpool (old and new), Norwich, Colchester, Worcester, York, Leeds (Minster), Peterborough (very different), Gloucester - you name them. My possible favorite is the mighty, beautiful Ely Cathedral. Sheffield Cathedral, frankly, does not compare - architecturally (its tacked-on modern part doesn't help much), nor in terms of the art and church objects inside. It is rather plain. Not ugly, but plain. Small-ish, too. And comparatively "naked". If you're in the city for a day's visit you might want to pop in anyway. But it wouldn't be worth the travel just for the sake of this building. Unless of course you're there for some religious event or concert.

We were in York the other day. Were amazed by the York Minster. And came to Selby to check out the…read moreAbbey. But didn't expect it to be so massive, so impressive. The town center is easy to walk. The main street, the shopping centre and the Abbey. All in short distance. The church is one of the relatively few surviving abbey churches of the medieval period. And it's not a cathedral actually. But it is one of the largest. It was founded by Benedict of Auxerre[3] in 1069 and subsequently built by the de Lacy family. As the York Minster, this Abbey too was hit by a fire. In 1906. And in 2002 it underwent a big restoration, costing several million pounds. Now the Abbey is standing there in all its glory. Almost 1000 years of history looking at you! A really impressive piece of history and architecture. Walked around it first to see all the details and to explore the grounds. Inside the Abbey is equally impressive. Even a shop, a café and toilets are located inside. Which was a bit unusual. Be sure to check out the impressive organ and the Washington Window. Selby was a pleasant surprise, a wonderful town. And the heart and centerpiece is the amazing Abbey. Definitely a must-do when in the area. It's surprising how few visitors have found their way here, we've seen only a handful.

Selby Abbey is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin and St Germain. Being build by a Norman family one expects the tower to be Norman, but the eastern end is decorated in a Gothic style, and the west front a mixture of Norman, Gothic and Victorian. Like many Abbey's and Minsters, Selby Abbey boasts it own colourful past. Particularly damaged during the 17th century and then the great fire of 1906, the Abbey now finds its self benefiting from extensive restoration that ensures its status as one of the most impressive abbey's in the country. I would recommend the inspiring atmosphere, the beautiful stain glass and architecture and the quite daunting climb up the tower if you are brave enough!

If you are a stranger and drive past this church, you most probably will think; 'What the Hell is…read morethat?' It does look a bit strange as it is a very out-dated building with a huge green dome. But I think that is what gives it its character. Apart from the outside, the church is beautiful inside and large...very large. They have stained glass windows depicting stories from the Bible which are elegantly finished. It is old fashioned inside but it does not feel unmodern. It is different but beautiful. Alongside the church they hold different clubs for children such as Rainbows and Brownies. So if you are new to the area and want your child to join a club where they can learn about God and play games with friends, then contact the church.

Yew makes great longbows. The church itself has connections with the Eyre family and Charlotte Bronte stayed here in 1845. The area around is much of the setting for Jane Eyre. She used Hathersage as the 'Norton' of the story 'Jane Eyre' - taking the heroine's surname from the local family. She also used North Lees Hall, an Elizabethan manor house 2km north of Hathersage, as the house where Mrs Rochester jumped from the roof to her death. This is also the gateway to the Peak District and Snake pass great for walking and picnicing. Be aware that much of the landscape looks the same and it is VERY easy to lose your bearings. Take maps, compass, water and walking equipment.
