It's a small, uninspiring building from the outside that holds a museum with a military-communications slant and a very wee café slinging the necessities: hydration for the hikers, light lunches for those waiting for the hikers. A bottle of water and a Gatorade was $5 flat. From what I could see inside, the exhibits themselves looked pretty bare bones but I did hear the staff person mentioning a twenty minute film that loops pretty frequently. Not exactly sure what it's about but I'd say any movie is a tough sell when you could just pop up to the top of Signal Hill and soak in the view.

But here one can find handcrafted items with a St. John's theme, such as slate coasters, sun catches, wine stoppers and even switchplate covers. The St. John's townhouses are worked into many of these items. They also carry calendars and books about Newfoundland. There is also a selection of former independent Newfoundland postage stamps for stamp collectors. The shop is about one block up and two over from the cruise terminal.

But three storeys of pure knitting awesome makes up for any discrepancies, and prices are much more reasonable than other wool shops around town. You can find just about any type of knitting and weaving material here, as well as all the extras. It's a great place for knitting newbs, too. The business card for the cab neglected to put the area code on the card? The wonderful ladies at the botanical garden helped us out. Gave me the area code and called a taxi for us. Also gave us suggestions on a cemetery to visit. I get lots of different reactions when I ask about cemeteries and they weren't phased they were kinda exited. Great place and wonder friendly staff.

I arrived asking for examples of traditional Newfoundland music and was immediately directed to 2 CDs that I subsequently purchased: Rum Ragged (The Thing About Fish) and The Dardanelles (In the Spring. That's the Time). My only regret was not being around for any live music or appearances by local talent. I hope there's a next time!
