After researching for months to find a hair salon that uses natural products, I decided to book an appointment at Chrysalis. I booked it online and got an appointment to color and cut my hair on Saturday afternoon.The experience was amazing from the very first moment I stepped into the hair salon. Very nice, intimate atmosphere , nothing like crowded, loud and business-like environment you can see at regular hair salons. Julia is amazing, she definitely knows what to do and how to make you comfortable and confident regarding what needs to be done. I have a very thin dark brown hair and I didn't want to keep using regular color products because I felt the amount of chemicals were making my hair even thinner. Julia talked to me and she was able to choose the right color to hide my grey but keeping it natural. She is very professional and she know exactly what to do. Cutting my hair was an even greater experience. She was able to understand what I was looking for and she could find the right style for my hair and now I just feel amazing. I called and got an appointment w/Julia; she was able to work with my crazy busy schedule last minute! She's amazing! Not only was she able to hide my grey, but she did an amazing job matching up my (colored hair) to my natural hair color. I absolutely love what she has done. The last place that I went to did such a drastic change to cover my grey, Julia (w/n minutes of talking to me and not asking me to look blankly at a color pallet of fake hair) picked out a color that would work for me. While I was waiting, I laid on the water massage bed for a little relaxation which I have yet to find in any other salon. This was a great added feature. She even mixed up a personal essential oil mix to try out. I also got a cut afterwords, which my hair needed (badly). She was able to look at what I needed and go from there. She listened to what I was looking for, and gave me the right cut w/perfect amount of layers. This was a wonderful experience, and I highly recommend this place. read more

I was interested in Chrysalis because I noticed Julia uses products that don't contain any chemicals. I received a full body massage from her using essential oils that not only smell great, but make you feel great too. Julia gave an incredible massage and really tailored it to what my body needed, which is the best part. Only I know whats best for my body and what it needs and in talking with her she was able to get a feel for what was right for me. I have a lot of knots and tight muscles in my back and she spent extra time trying to work all the kinks out and it really loosened it up. It also really helps that, right from the start, she makes you feel like she's known you for years. An upbeat and personable attitude combined with her knowledge of the field and products helped me feel very comfortable and made it easy to trust Julia. This is the BEST salon in the city!! Julia is a master hair sculptor! Seriously. I had trouble most of my life getting even a decent cut/style because I have super thick and naturally wavey hair. The first time I showed up to her salon it was instant love. Lots of natural light and all around great atmosphere. I left feeling super sassy and on top of the world! Just like every lady should feel! She never pushes products, but I have asked her to recommend some because she always made my hair so bouncy and shiny, and now I own the products to get that look every day at home! Oh! And she doesn't use super smelly harsh chemicals EVER! So my sensitive skin is in pure heaven. Seriously. I can't say enough good things about this place!! Just go here already! I've been to see Julia three times now and each time is a lovely adventure. Julia and her space are fun, comfortable, clean and professional, with great personal touches that you don't find in larger more commercial salons. Julia listens and believes me when I say I'm just going to wash my hair, and maybe comb it. I have super fine and straight hair. I really love the cuts she have given me that lend body to my hair with no extra effort on my part. And, they grow out so naturally that if I forget to make an appointment, I start getting compliments on my hair again at its new length. She also cuts the hair of a friend of mine with curly hair, and she works with the shape of my friend's face and the way her hair falls to make a very engaging look. read more

Julia is amazing! She is the most knowledgeable about hair stylist I've ever been to and I've been to many. Julia works with my hair's natural growth, direction, density, etc. for a chemical-free style that is absolutely adorable! And the best part? I don't have to use any product because I'm not fighting my hair's natural inclinations. She's even enhanced the tiny bit of natural curl in my hair that I've always hated and works against. She went with the curl and I'm getting so many compliments on this latest cut. I recommend Julia to everyone. She's very laid back and since she's the only stylist and she starts off with a head and neck massage, it's like a relaxing spa experience. I came all the way from Cairo, Egypt to visit Julia at Chrysalis! After a Julia-less year, my hair was more than ready for some serious attention. It was my first time visiting Chrysalis and I was delighted to try out the aqua-bed before I sat down for a neck/scalp massage and cut. The new chemical free products are fabulous. Julia has been cutting my hair for years and never fails to figure out ways to make it manageable (we all hate having a great cut and then having no idea what to do the next day!) and works with me to figure out styles that suit my hair well. Not only is Julia incredibly COVID safe with masks and other amazing protocols in place, her professionalism, authenticity, and skill is above any hair stylist I've experienced in Madison. I will not be returning. I brought a photo and I immediately got excuses as to why it would not work, even though two other hairdressers (in a different city) did the exact cut. Julia gave me the haircut she wanted. I left with my hair looking nothing like the photo. She asked if it was OK to cut a 1/2" and then proceeded to cut off twice as much. My hair looks like it was hacked, not professionally cut. It looked like a Florence Henderson shag from the 1970s. read more
