DO NOT GO HERE. I specifically called weeks in advance to make sure that my insurance would cover the visit. When i got there they collected the $50.00 co pay. I saw the doctor they did an exam and took retinal pictures. I also had an eye contact fitting. When I left I was told that they needed to collect $150.00 for the retinal photo's and they would submit it to my insurance. I was never told that the retinal photos were extra, I was never given the option to have them taken or not. I had them verify my insurance weeks in advance. The contact fitting was $90.00. The CO-PAY was $50.00 and the retinal pictures were $150.00. This ended up being a $290.00 Doctor Visit. They don't do anything special here. It's just a high priced eye exam. I have been to the MAYO CLINIC and I have never been charged anything extra! AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS! read more

Run away from this place. They overcharge. Told me the only lenses that are covered for cataract surgery have no vision correction In them. I have friends who had the surgery -also on Medicare who said it was covered so I asked several times. Told me it would be 13k but not to worry as I could pay interest free for 24 months. This did not include testing fees and drops. I went elsewhere and the procedure was completely covered. When I called to cancel my next appointment with chua they asked why. I told them that I didn't know what they were trying to pull but I wanted no part of it. The scheduler quickly said I misunderstood and corrective were covered. I did not misunderstand. I asked Dr directly what lenses were covered and she said only non corrective I cannot stress enough that you should not use them. My experience is bittersweet at best. They first removed the cataract from my right eye, that actually went reasonably well. I was actually looking forward to having the left eye done ........ silly me! I was the last patient to have cataract surgery there December of 2025. My opinion is the last, was not best! Unlike my right eye I began to have immediate problems, serious discomfort, headaches etc. and returned the next day. the pressure in my left eye was 41! It was decided that I should have another surgery. This was done under just a local ( numbing agent ) while I was totally awake, as there was no anesthesiologist readily available that day. That was quite the experience and one I would NOT recommend! I was told that he (Chu) removed what looked like a "hairball" from the drain in my eye. What caused that? After what seemed to be endless follow ups, a new discovery was made. I now have a hole in my retina! They would neither confirm, or deny any responsibility regarding that. I do know that as of spring of 2025 I had no such malady! That was my last thorough eye exam at a different provider. I now have floaters, and what I would call filtered vision in that eye, like looking through a dirty contact. In hindsight assembly line cataract removal is probably not your best choice. I certainly would not, could not recommend it to anyone! Through all of this, not counting the surgery that I was "out" for I doubt Chu spent more than 10 minutes in total with me! He certainly was not there when I woke up after surgery as his TV ads suggest! read more

1. 3 different Initial forms ask for your occupation. Why? Before you even go into a consultation, they want to know too much irrelevant personal information. 2. The 4 front desk clerks, in scrubs, give convoluted answers to simple questions, as they're only task is to get you to fill out 11 forms, which only 2 are 1/2 medically based, and the remaining are reconfigured and duplicated for a marketing firm to receive. 3. It's not mentioned that your eyes will be dilated with a "solution" and the clerks just responded with medical advise of just wearing a pair of sunglasses to drive, when the form says to have someone drive you. I didn't know clerks in scrubs were licensed doctors to give advise also, as they hand you a pen to sign away and get you in a room ASAP!? read more

"Professional" is the best way to describe everything about this office. Front desk always greets me with a smile and kind word, and their check-in kiosks are super convenient. I can tell they see a lot of patients, but it never feels that way. Never have much of a wait (not like at other doctor offices) which I appreciate. I tend to be a question-asker, especially with medical things. And when meeting with the doctors, they don't seem rushed or like they don't have time for me and my questions. My elderly mother needed a cataract removed. She had seen the TV commercials and was interested. I called the office for information. They were all friendly until I shared my mother would need some assistance if she needed to climb up on a table. I was put on hold, then the person came back on and told me, with a definite change in tone, that unless my mother could completely get on the table they use for procedures by herself they would not be able to see her. So...be aware if you have any ambulatory issues (or it seems just need a hand to steady yourself) you won't be welcome here. Seems a bit counterintuitive to me, as the population who often has cataracts, etc., is older and more likely to need a helping hand. read more

Wonderful practitioners. Had a great exam performed by the nurses and the ophthalmologist. Super friendly and competent. Would have given 5 stars except for my experience with the billing department. Prior to my appointment I did my due diligence with my insurance company who assured me my entire visit would be covered due to the medical nature of my visit. I then received a bill for 100 bucks from Chu Vision. No big deal, But why spend 100 dollars when I was told my visit would be covered? So, I called and asked the woman in billing to resubmit my claim. The lady actually argued with me about it, and told me resubmitting it wouldn't be successful. I had to ask her multiple times (3 to be exact) and had to be very firm about it before she finally agreed to do so- albeit unpleasantly. Is it really that big of a deal? Isn't that her job? Well, guess who actually owed ME money in the end? I just received a check from Chu vision, and even though the check was only for $10.00, they almost made me pay $100.00 unnecessarily. Worst Experience Ever!!!! Long but important ... Please take the time to read!!! Found out I have cataracts & was referred to Chu Vision. I called to make an appointment, told them that I wanted to be sure to see Dr. Chu since I had some anxiety & phobia issues, I was guaranteed on seeing Dr. Chu the day of my consult. Went to my consult on 8/7/17, after seeing the tech, she told me another Dr. would be coming in to go over my options. When that Dr. came in I asked him about seeing Dr. Chu, I was then informed that Dr. Chu was not in because he was on vacation. I explained my anxiety & phobia to him, he guaranteed me that they wouldn't be a problem, that they had people with worse anxiety & phobias go through it all the time. He then talked to me about my options for corrective eye surgery. I said that I wanted to wait till I saw Dr. Chu before making the decision, he pressured me into making the decision immediately, for many reasons. I still said I wanted to wait, he kept pressuring me, & I finally said yes (I was tired of feeling like I was stupid for not making the decision). Was charged $496.47 before leaving that day because the testing fee had to be paid before the tests & I was Guaranteed again that the next appointment I would be able to see Dr. Chu. 2nd appointment was on 8/21/17, they did all the advanced testing for corrective surgery (never saw any of the same tech's or Dr.'s that I saw on the first visit). After the tests they had me see the surgery scheduler/billing person, who went over dates for surgeries & prices. I asked her when I was going to be able to see Dr. Chu about my concerns since I didn't get to see him the first visit. She told me he wasn't in the office. I said I didn't want to sign any papers or make any surgery appointments until I got to see him. Again, I felt pressured to make the appointments before everything filled up. She did make a phone call & Dr. Chu finally showed up, explaining to me he had just gotten done with another TV Interview about him & the Institute. I explained to him in detail about my anxiety issues & my severe claustrophobia. He assured me that I would not be awake when the surgery happened & I had nothing to worry about, they had successfully operated on people with worse anxiety & phobias than mine, & they had woken up after it was over, asking when he was going to start. I made all the necessary appointments for the upcoming surgeries & follow-ups. 1st surgery appointment was 8/30/17. Was brought back to the surgery prep area to get ready. They had multiple room areas set up, nurses & anesthesiologists were running back & forth to all the patient areas, reminded me of herding cattle. As the nurses were prepping me & asking questions, filling out forms, the anesthesiologist was also getting me ready. I informed all of them also about my anxiety & phobia, to which I again was told everything would be fine, I wouldn't remember any of it, & that they were going to sedate me more than normal. There were 2 anesthesiologists, one male & one female. The female was the one I got & she was very rude, while talking to the nurse, female anesthesiologist was putting my IV line in, I heard her say "damn-it, that one collapsed", she then proceeded to find another vein. After they had administered the meds, the nurse was still trying to finish with her questions & paperwork, the female anesthesiologist told her she could do that later that they wanted to get This one in now (meaning me). They brought me to where the surgery would take place, the anesthesiologist started to lay me back, I told her that I wasn't even drowsy yet, she then grabbed my arm to try & restrain me, I pulled my arm away from her, sitting up a little, & told them again that I was not drowsy or asleep, she then grabbed my arm harder, (which ended up leaving bruises) & tried to restrain me again. I pulled away again, & then she said, "bring this one back, she's fighting us, we aren't doing her surgery". They brought me back to the recovery area, took out my IV, got my husband & said I was going home. After getting home I put my contacts in, a few hours later my left eye started hurting so I took out my contacts, found something in my eye, so I called to see what it was. They informed me it was a sponge they use to keep the eye numb & that there was only one, & since I didn't go through with the surgery they didn't do a full cleanup job on me. The next day I called about the charges that went on my credit card, since we had to pay for ALL surgeries in advance, I was informed that some of the charges would be refunded but others would not because they had already done the testing. So .... Total out of pocket expenses for me, even though I never had any of the surgeries, was treated like crap, pressured, belittled, bruised, & lied too was ..... $893.93!!! Took my elderly mother to Dr. Chu for cataracts. After the surgery, Mom could not see! I called him and could not get him on the phone. I talked with one of his associate docs, and she didn't even know what to say to me. I told her that the eye issues were totally wrecking her life. Once we got mom back in - we found he had screwed up the correction lenses ...he said because she had done Lasik surgery years prior. (Who hasn't had Lasik? So - all of his Lasik patients need to worry now when they get cataracts?!) His solution was to "Piggy Back" another lense on top of the wrong one. I was not happy about this - but he said it was common. He said that removing his "mistake" lense was a risk. Mom then developed issues with cloudiness developing between the two lenses and she couldn't see. We called and called, and my dad even went to the office to plead with someone to help. Dr. Chu would not see my dad, and did not return any calls!! What kind of a doctor acts like this??? We took her to another practitioner, and it was a SIMPLE fix to just zap the lense with a laser and that totally cleared it off. Still, the other doc was unimpressed with the piggy back lense solution and removed the TWO incorrect lenses and fixed her eyes. I would RUN the other direction. I see this guy on TV and I just cringe!!! read more

After wearing glasses everyday since I was 12, I finally decided to get LASIK. I went from -4.5 in one eye and -5.5 in the other (+ astigmatism), to having 20/20 vision! The actual operation with the laser took less than one minute and I was able to go to work the next day. There were some halos and eye fatigue the first two weeks (so I was working at about 40% capacity, I would estimate), but all the negative effects decreased over time. Great experience! I've worn contacts since high school and I haven't been able to see the big E on the eye chart for years. I'm a professional pilot, so I was nervous about having surgery in case anything went wrong. At my first visit I was told of all the worst case scenarios. Even after that I still had enough confidence in Dr Chu after hearing so many good things about him. The entire staff was very professional and friendly. Without an exception this is the finest facility I have visited. The organization of my pre-surgery requirements was superior. From the friendly welcome at reception to the nurse making sure everything was understood there was not second that I felt concerned. Going thru a mired of vision tests by looking through the scopes an impressive variety of star war equipment each technician provided a clear explanation as to what was being done and why. There was never a wait between stations of more than two or three minutes. The staff's friendly, well informed and very kind, considering I have Parkinson's. Certainly making it difficult for all. I was referred to Dr Chu by my optometrist. I also did my own research online and found Dr Chu highly qualified and well regarded. His medical degree and residency were at top-rated universities. He has taught other physicians and is known internationally. It is very intimidating to undergo surgery on the eyes and I wanted the best. I had both lazik and cataract removal. Dr Chu and his staff are incredibly friendly and attentive. They are thorough and answer any questions or concerns. Then they go over the options that will work best for you. It's hard to explain how much of a difference this makes. Going from a lifetime of poor eye sight to 20/20 vision is nothing short of astounding. I needed cataract surgery and came to Chu Vision for a consultation visit to see what they had to offer for cataract surgery services. A good friend highly recommended them to me. As an owner of my own company as well as chairman of the board of an association insurance company, I was appalled by the treatment I received when I visited Chu Vision in Bloomington on Tuesday. I have never been subjected to such wanton disregard for the customers needs while the staff was seeking fee income from me outside my insurance coverage.These guys are a factory for generating money from customers and seem to function like a new car dealership. They were relentless and left me feeling embarrassed. Prior to visiting Chu Vision, I visited 2 other vision clinics and was never charged a cent for a consultation visit, yet when I came to Chu, I was immediately asked to pay a $20 copay and then an additional $500 fee to see "whether I would be a good candidate for a premium lens implant". Really? I have never been subjected to such wanton demand for cash payments from a medical professional before. Had I not visited other clinics first, I would never have known this is not the norm. Chu Vision should be embarrassed for the way they treat customers. I have never walked out of a medical facility before, but I did from Chu on Tuesday. I'm 67 years old and it was a first for me. I was treated so poorly, I will never set foot in their office again. It was a totally creepy experience. New car dealerships are less aggressive. Other vision companies were much more customer friendly and didn't charge me anything for a consultation and were actually appreciative to seek my business. Chu Vision is not customer friendly.
