So to calm the situation I asked him about his live music and began to tell him that I am trying to rebrand the hall at our local VFW and he cuts me off to snap at me, "Good luck with that! Try to get 25 people in that place! Ha! Ha! Ha!" as he turned and was walking away from me. I was in udder shock! What?! It's the local VFW Hall and I'm trying to help out our veterans?! My entire point was before he cut me off, the hall holds way more people than his little, bitty place and I wanted to offer the hall so he can book larger acts. Oh well! His loss! While the atmosphere is definitely that of a local neighborhood bar, the kitchen puts out some surprisingly good food. Today's visit We started with the Cheese Lasagna with a Meatball and Garlic Bread. The lasagna noodles were cooked perfectly and had a nice blend of cheeses, all covered with a rich red sauce. It came with a fresh house salad topped with slivered carrots and diced tomatoes, which we enjoyed with a side of ranch dressing. We also ordered the Sausage with Hot and Sweet Peppers. The sausage was butterflied and appeared to have been cooked on the flat-top grill. It was tasty, although there were a few areas that had gotten a little too charred from the grill. The bun was soft and complemented the sausage nicely. The sandwich also came with a generous portion of onion soup, which was one of the highlights of the meal. The soup was rich and packed with onions, with a flavorful broth that had a nice Worcestershire note. A piece of bread was placed in the center of the bowl and topped with shredded mozzarella. The bread quickly soaked up the hot broth while the cheese melted perfectly, making for a very satisfying bowl of soup. Our previous visit During our visit about a month ago, we tried several items from the menu and specials. The Meatloaf Special was beefy and nicely seasoned. We also tried the Pork Chop Sandwich, which featured a pork chop sliced in half to fit the bun. It was cooked perfectly and made for a very enjoyable sandwich. We also ordered the Fried Whole Half Chicken. While the chicken had good flavor, we felt it suffered just a little from overcooking, possibly because it was served as a whole half rather than being disjointed. For sides, we tried the Creamy Spinach Soup and Onion Rings. The spinach soup was creamy and tasted fresh, while the onion rings were slightly overcooked but still had great flavor. Overall, this place is a great example of why you shouldn't always judge a restaurant by its surroundings. It may be an older, no-frills neighborhood bar, but the kitchen is putting out some really good food, with a nice variety of regular menu items and weekly specials. We enjoyed both of our visits and will definitely be back to try more of their specials and other items from the regular menu. To be a good dive bar, in my opinion, the people need to be friendly. The people manning the bar were not friendly at all. The single patron who tried to befriend us just kept repeating the same sob story over and over again. We thought the place was shut down initially because the windows are tinted and the door was locked. Apparently, you have to ring a buzzer to be let in. The inside is just as dark as the tinted windows would lead you to believe and the place smells like an ashtray. One and done.
