We decided to do something different this year for Valentine's Day and made dinner reservations at the Chugiak Senior Center after seeing it advertised a few weeks back on their marquee... and we're so glad we did. The entryway was well lit, clean and everyone was just ridiculously friendly and working so hard. Seating started at 5:30 and dozens of us were waiting, mingling and happy to be there. They had a bar area set up with beer and wine, so you were able to have a drink while you waited and for dinner. They moved us quickly into the dining room, seating tables of 6- 8 and it was so wonderful to mingle with others. We sat with two other couples and enjoyed chatting with them. We were served a lovely meal... baskets of piping hot fried mushrooms were served to each table, followed by salad with a tasty brie stuffed puff pastry, warm whole grain bread with butter, your choose of prime rib or salmon and fixings and topped off with your choice of chocolate cake, mango cake or cheesecake with cherries. We had the prime rib and it was cooked to a perfect medium rare! The volunteers worked so hard to serve all the tables, refill beverages and clean up! It was a wonderful evening and we'll definitely go back again! I'm looking forward to going by for lunch one of these days that I'm working from home... which has been highly recommended in the past. There are also a lot of activities offered and you don't have to be a senior citizen to join in... I think I'll join the knit witz group in the near future! read more

We are a full service Senior Center with housing, assisted living, adult day services, meals-on-wheels, congregate meals, transportation, personal care attendants, exercise and health outreach. We have been in business for over 40 years and serve seniors age 60 and over in the Chugiak, Peters Creek, Eklutna and Eagle River Communities. All of our special events are open to the general public.

History

Established in 1975.

A community building built by local pioneers in the 1940s served as the initial senior center. Situated on a 7-acre parcel of land purchased from another neighborhood non-profit organization, the Chugiak Benefit Association, the senior center quickly grew in response to the overwhelming community needs. Initially, the Center existed solely on community and member donations of cash and food. In 1976, a needs survey revealed that a large number of area seniors were not able to access health care or perform necessary functions due to the lack of transportation and assistance. Many were found to be isolated in the winter months. With the help of the Municipality of Anchorage and with grants from the State of Alaska and private donations, Chugiak-Eagle River Senior Center has grown to a facility that is over 100,000 sq ft and consistently meets the needs of seniors living in our service area

Linda Hendrickson has been the Executive Director for over 15 years. Her history in our small community and love for senior services makes her an excellent leader and advocate for CERSC.
