Yes, it's dark in the rooms but there are bedside lamps if you want to read. Watch out for the differently sized stairs and ask for a ground floor room if you have mobility issues. Only draw back was that our shower leaked and bathroom amenities are quite spartan. The bedroom was also uncomfortably hot and despite adjusting the radiator in the room, we weren't able to cool it down.

While I'm all into a clever decorataive theme, what I really like about the hotel is the super comfy beds and bedding, spacious bathrooms, really lovely cafe/bar in the entrance with loads of seating, strong wifi and great selection of drinks and even some free nibbles that you can help yourself to. What the hotel could improve is the air circulation in the rooms, it gets pretty stuffy and the windows don't open wide and there is no central air system.
