The amount of history surrounding this entire area of Southwest France is unparalleled to begin with, and Sarlat-la-Caneda contributes a very large portion to this magical setting. It is a medieval town that was established mainly due to the Benedictine abbey of Carolingian origin. The Sarlat Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Sacerdos, and the building itself can be seen in records as early as 1081. It was one of the very few cathedrals in the region that was never raided by the Vikings!!!! Those rascals!! Thank God, because if it were destroyed and leveled to the ground, we would not be able to visit and understand how profound this divine place actually is today and how well the efforts to preserve it have been accomplished. The Malraux Law was passed in 1962, which saw Sarlat restored, and this effort saved many buildings from demolition. The architect of this law, Andrea Malraux, was, at the time, the French Cultural Minister. This legal act greatly enhanced Sarlat's medieval center through the extensive restoration of most of its houses. My favorite (as mentioned in one of my earlier reviews) was the Manoir de Gisson, a museum that you should not miss when visiting! Some of my most favorite highlights during my visit were, of course, the food, the winding, cobblestone roads, the art galleries, and the nightlife, where visitors can enjoy an aperitif at a cozy, outdoor cafe' before venturing out to enjoy the tantalizing cuisine of this city! From foie gras, black truffles, cepes, dried sausages, cheese, walnuts, and wine, this girl was golden and I had everything that needed or could ever want! There is a great little grocery mart, tons of places to find delicious food and lot's of curiosities. There are candy shops, cafes, and desert spots galore!, And one cannot leave without visiting the farmer's markets, which are huge and packed full of the most amazing produce, delectables, and gifts. They have markets two times a week and they are a must see! I even ventured out to discover a wonderful art store and since I happen to be a painter, I could not pass up the 1.5 mile walk to scope out some French art supplies and I even got to pop into an incredibly curated antique shop as well! I could go on and on about this magical place, but I am going to leave it to you to book your ticket and see for yourself. My only hope is that my photos tell it's story and make you want to book your next trip to France!

Market Day is fabulous! You'll see stuff not sold anywhere, and you'll see various foods not cooked anywhere else (unless you're in Spain), so get ready for lunch and have some Paella! There's no warnings for pickpockets, here! They're friendly people! Go early, before it gets too hot, & too crowded, and while the dish is fresh! BTW: Our Tour Guide told us, French Costumer Service, they ignore their customers, they don't pressure you to buy, sometimes they don't even greet you. That's their style! I'm in Customer Service, but I always talk to my customers. If I was ignored, I just assumed, the seller don't care about me! But not in France.

I am sorry that I do not remember the name of the woman at the front counter reception, but what I do remember is how very helpful, professional, fun, knowledgeable, engaging and kind she was! Silly me, but I forgot my ticket at the house and she called over to the Department of Tourism to ask them to look up my online transaction so that she could get the go ahead to admit me into the museum. Talk about going above and beyond!! That was such a nice thing to do!!! Don't follow my lead though! Be sure that you visit with your ticket in hand!!! ;-) The manor 's origins are rooted in the 13th century and is the only monument/building of it's kind in the town that is open to the public so do not miss this gem! It depicts the everyday life of Sarlat's elite, in particular, that of the Gisson family. As I embarked on my self-guided tour, I was first captured by the amazing kitchen, with it's beautiful historic reenactment set-up, it took me back to the time period. It's was so lovingly curated and very accurately portrayed. The fireplace was gorgeous, the spindle work on the hutch mind-blowing and the care that they took to create the whole scene just beautiful and outstanding as it was for the rest of the mansion! The music playing in the background really set the tone as well. In addition to the house itself which is comprised of 15 rooms, A cabinet of curiosities is located in the vaulted cellar. Apparently, collecting and displaying strange artifacts and novelties became all the rage with dignitaries towards the end of the Renaissance period. There are so many remarkable items in the house, that it's hard to go into detail about every single one so I have posted a ton of photos that speak for themselves. Rest assured, if you visit you will be hearkened back in history and will experience a very memorable time exploring this very unique part of Sarlat's history.

Positives: The house shows the bones of an 18th manor house, you get the atmosphere of what the ascendancy lived like in that period. Negatives: nothing of any value on the object d'arts, furniture etc...just a hodge pogo of "stuff"...but it's the only town manor opened to the public so if you have to see inside of one these extraordinary houses with stone roofs built in the 17th and 18th century this is the only game in town..

Each room was lovely. Very tastefully decorated and spotless. Bathrooms have been partially modernized. Several have tubs with a shower wand. Beds are very comfortable with fresh duvet covers and high thread count sheets. Some town noise filters through the large windows but not too bad. An excellent choice when visiting Sarlat. This accommodation does not cater to families with children or pets.

The program lent first-hand experience to people and places in the book series by Martin Walker about Bruno, Chief of Police (title of book #1) in St. Denis, a fictitious small town in the Dordogne. The program was superbly crafted to introduce the 10 participants, all guests at Les Cordeliers, to this beautiful and historic corner of France, with its renowned sites and unique culture. After the Bruno program, we continued at Les Cordeliers for another week with a rental car to further explore and enjoy the Perigord. To summarize: Sarlat is the perfect central point from which to discover the magical Perigord region of Dordogne. Les Cordeliers is the perfect small hotel experience in Sarlat. And Stephen and Susan are the perfect hosts. If you spend more than a night there, you will come away as friends.

Superb stay at the Moulin Rouge…read more We stayed 5 nights the last week of May. Highly recommended!!! The house - a beautiful 500 year old stone house, was in the owner's family for 200 years. Updated and very well kept. The ground - The minute you enter the place you feel like you had stepped into a magical place. The pictures don't capture well the beauty of the estate. It is truly incredible. The house sits on a beautiful 6 acre lot with gorgeous garden and a beautiful natural pool which is part of the Dordogne River. Across the pool there is a beautiful grassed slope with trees at the very top. Underground spring brings fresh water into the pool. The room - We stayed in the Rosalie room. Nicely decorated in a Country French fashion. On one side you have a Queen size bed and on the other a seating area with a sofa and a small table. There is an in-room white tiled bathroom with a shower. The room floor is also white tiles. All very clean and well kept. The owners - Rosette and Misha are the nicest hosts we have ever had! They are so welcoming, warm and friendly couple, a true pleasure to be their guests. I just can't say enough about how wonderful they are. They both are very happy to help out with trip suggestions and any help that you might need. Both speak French; Rosette also speaks English very well. The breakfast - Out of this world! Everything was fresh and delicious! Rosette is a great cook! We got a wonderful selection of breads, home made jams, home baked goods, eggs, cheese, fresh fruit, coffee. The price - We found it to be very fair. Very good value for the money. The nearby area - there is a bakery and a small market a few steps outside the BnB. There is a bigger supermarket 1-2 mins by car. The fresh local (traveling) market is held just across from the BnB every Tuesday. If you have not been to one yet - go. While at Cenec rent a Canoe, it is a great way to enjoy the area. If you want to take it easy, pick the route which goes with the stream.
