For historians, it was the same family that was at the origin of the town of Figeac. It is the largest estate in Saint-Émilion with 99 acres of vineyards. Due to its soil, which is dominated by gravel, it is planted in grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Cabernet Franc (35%), and Merlot (30%). Today, Marie-France Manoncourt and her three daughters run the operation.

It was inside a handsome wooden box - tres chic. The tiny, 3.3 hectare Right Bank vineyard is produces wines which are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot in equal portions in each vintage. The vineyard has a terroir that consists of limestone, clay, gravel and sandy soils. The wine is aged in 50% new, French oak barrels for between 12 and 22 months, depending on the quality and character of the vintage. On average, 1,000 cases are produced of Chateau Le Chatelet each year. The estate is currently managed by Alain and Julien Berjal The Berjals will ship their wines to the US and reviewing the order book showed lots of shipments this year to individuals.

She is actually the wife of the owner's son, so it was nice to have a family member actually conduct the tasting. The wine itself was fairly good. Again, I'm not an expert, but I did think that it was better than average. We ended up just buying a bottle each due to luggage restrictions. The experience was very different to a tasting at the Napa. It's a lot smaller and more intimate. You don't have the nice scenery that you get at Napa, but we spent way more time learning from AJ than we would typically spend at a Napa wine tasting.

A Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) château from the Saint-Émilion appellation, Angelus trailed only Château d'Yquem as the most beautiful château we visited. The château itself appeared to be a new construction that was specifically built with traditional/classic touches. The château and the facilities housing the winemaking operations were the perfect blend of state of the art and traditional. The grounds were obviously well maintained and beautiful, as well. Our tour ended with a wonderful tasting of the 2005 Château Angelus. It was sinfully good and capped off our tour of Bordeaux in perfect fashion. If you're on the Right Bank and have the opportunity to tour Château Angelus, take it!

The tasting was 12 euros for their 2007 and 2011's vintage; free if you purchase any wine. Luckily, there was a professional tasting earlier in the day, which led us to also taste their 2009 Vintage as well (70% Merlot, 15% Cab Sauv, and 15% Cab Franc), lucky! The tour brought us to their Vineyard (one of the highest appellation at St Emillion), VAT-room, Cellars, Underground Cellar, and their lovely Tasting room. What stood out on this tour was their Underground Cellars; it was huge since Chateau Beausejour-Becot holds 10% of each vintage that goes back ages! It was dark, cold, a bit eerie, and yet wonderful with all the old wines. Overall, Chateau Beausejour-Becot is a lovely family owned estate. They also provide wine from each of the owners and offer lots of wine that's ready to drink now or to save for a special occasion. PS. Did I mention that they are also part of the 18 Premier Grand Cru of St Emillion; Premier Grand Cru is classified every 10 years, so the next classification will be in 2022. *101 Euros for their 2009 Vintage

A true labor of love, a visit to Château Grand Mayne will reveal the rich history and process…read moreinvolved in the creation of their wine, which is granted the high honor of being a grand cru classé de Saint-Émilion. Unlike the wineries Americans may be accustomed to, a visit in Bordeaux is a far more intimate experience in which (more often than not I found) the host may even come in especially for your visit. As such, reservations should be made in advance. We were fortunate to have a private guided tour with the winemaker himself, who was not only able to provide us with a fascinating look at the history of the grounds and the family, but who was also able to provide unparalleled insight into the process involved in the production of their wines. The land itself is composed of many different types of soil. Accordingly, the mix of terroirs leads to a robust production of the Merlot grapes, along with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Then these varietals are used for blending to produce only the highest caliber of red wine. We walked among the tanks and learned about their fermentation process. After which, a peak into their wine cellar revealed a long history of the winery itself and the family. It was unbelievable to see bottles remaining from the early 1900s and to think that some of those bottles predated wars and other natural disasters that might have affected the yield. After a detailed overview of the winery, and a look into the process employed by Château Grand Mayne, we were treated to a tasting. The wine itself was powerful and full of tannins, yet remarkably smooth. We really learned a lot during our visit, and I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to get a closer look at the effort that goes into being a grand cru classé estate.
