Forgot how beautiful this place is!! The National Film Archives of México (Cineteca Nacional de México), is one of the Mexico City's great treasures. It's dedicated to the preservation, cataloging, and exhibition of Mexican and World Film. It's a fantastic place to go to the movies, hang out, have a quick bite, enjoy live jazz music and a drink. Films from all over the world can be enjoyed here. They're available in Spanish (sub-titled). For English-only audiences, there are plenty of films in this language. The Cineteca Nacional has been in place since the 1940s. Sadly, in 1982 a fire destroyed a large part of it. The center we see today opened in 1984. In 2012, the Cineteca had a huge makeover. The remodeling included fascinating architecture, a giant outdoor screening theater, a digital restoration laboratory, an expanded documentation center, a video library, restaurants, an exhibition gallery. This is a modern movie palace and Ministry of Culture project that features films from around the world. I saw the Australian film, "Sweet Country. It is fine move about race set in the late 19th century outback. There are twists and turns in the film much like the like the center itself. This film lover found churros, a wine bar, and a store named for Bella Lugosi in addition to popcorn and soda. This is a great place to appreciate film and modern Mexico. read more

This is a jewel for arts & culture created by the Mexican State!!! One of the good wills our Government has had towards us (the simple mortals), to expand our imagination. Being administrated by the Secretariat of Culture (CONACULTA), I can proudly confirm nothing else has been done than improving it's premises, expositions, parking, and displays (don't miss the Stanley Kubrick expo, plus the conferences about men's desire on May 2nd). Nowadays news about our México lindo y querido hasn't been bright. Sometimes good plans don't have the expected outcomes (specially when you are considered the backyard of the gringos). Trump leave my mind in peace and let me write about the good things my country has to offer!!! Leaving behind the constant bullying, Mexico City has one of the most important Film Centres in the world. It was coceived in 1974. The prolific plans according to The National Cinematheque's Web Page are: * Preservate the national and international filmic memories. * Foster the cinematographic culture in our country. Extremely fare prices ($50 general or $30 for students; young ppl 25/less; 60+), international films displayed everyday from 12:00 on lazy Monday's, 11:30 any other day. I find movie theaters to be quite therapeutic and they tend to fill me with a unique sense of nostalgia as I have only the greatest of memories at "the movies." Because of this I frequent theaters often, solo or otherwise, and foreign/ independent movie theaters like the Angelika and the IFC Center in New York City are my absolute go-to's. BUT I can confidently state that the Cineteca Nacional is now my absolute favorite movie theater EVER. I visited CN on a whim, not putting much thought into my movie choice (saw "Desierto" starring one of my favorite Mexican actors, Gael Bernal, and it was simply OK) and not truly realizing how beautiful this place is. So what I expected to be an average solo movie date quickly turned into an extraordinary experience as I was in awe at not only the size of this complex but by how well-kept and COOL it actually was. The place is adorned with cute shops (cafes, book stores, a restaurant, an adorable ice cream cart, etc.) and out door patio seating to chill before your movie, or grass to lay on. You can literally make seeing a movie a whole day outing. So on a sunny, warm day you can grab food, tan, read a book, sip an iced latte, AND watch a movie in an enormous theater which is exactly what I did. Many opted to make out on the grass... which seems to be THE thing to do in CDMX. Couples making out left and right. As if this theater isn't great enough, my outing cost me a total of 65 pesos (movie ticket, popcorn, and drink) which is about $5 USD?!?! I would physically return to CDMX just for this but when I do I'll skip sitting next to a guy loudly slurping coffee as it caused me much frustration and an overwhelming desire to punch him in the throat since I couldn't just move my seat because you choose a seat when you purchase your ticket. read more

A must visit for cinephilles! The space is wonderful and it's a film hub not just for filmmaking but for academic study, archiving, preservation, etc. Their daily programming includes international films from a wide variety of countries and each month has special programming that focuses on a specific auteur (for example this month is Alfred Hitchcock, Alfonso Cuaron is next. Last time I came it was Wes Anderson). Films are also quite cheap as well, only about 40-60 pesos if I remember correctly. Amazing architecture, ambient and movie selection. A true gem right in the heart of Coyoacan. Prices are super accesible (from tickets, to snacks) and I love that there are a few shops that sell memorabilia related to movies inside, too, as well as some coffee shops. This is my favorite spot in Mexico city! read more

This is a gorgeous space dedicated to Mexico's legacy as a center of film production and innovator - but it is a cinetheque, not a Museum of Mexican Film, meaning that it primarily serves as a place to screen movies. The movies it screens are either part of a larger canon (they're currently screening the films of Kubrick) and smaller films from Latin American (mostly Mexico). The space also has quite a few small stores operating within it, selling books dedicated to Mexican Art and some tchotchkes. If you're in Coyoacan and wanna see a movie - definitely the place to go. read more

This is my new groovy hang out spot. Parking is never an issue, lots of open spaces. A really cool place to come and hang out. Movie ticket prices are very affordable and their selection is always very good. There's also places to have a beer,a sandwich, some wine, a chat, a nap, you name it! I love going to the Cineteca and recommend you go there too! read more

New parking structure, free outdoor movies @ 8pm. Remodeling is by Architect Rojkind, unbelievable it's so unfinished, shame on him for charging so much and not delivering. Far end has a free temporary exhibition hall. read more
