Brilliant place to take the kids, staff are always efficient and friendly. Always got the newest movies and it's also clean.

When this was your typical flea pit cinema, it was still a wonderful place to visit. Then it fell into disrepair and became a place you dared your mates to break into during the late 1980s after school had finished. Now, The Rex (as all good cinemas should be called) has been restored to its former glory. When I say former, think 1930s Art Deco, plush red seating, original projector and art house matinées. The place is a treat and a MUST visit for any cineophile. Prices are reasonable (approx £7 at time of writing) but availability is tough. You need to quick on the phone as it seems every person in Berkhamsted is a paid up member. Before each performance (and they are performances!) you can relax in the lobby where there are books on film to paw over or head down stairs and grab yourself a beer or a glass of wine. It's that sort of place. Do make sure you get to your seat in time for the traditional, and I found informative, pre film introduction from the Manager, James. A proud, curious creature James embodies the character behind this most charming of movie houses.

This is more of an experience than a simple cinema, and seems hugely popular book in advance.

SUICIDE ATTEMPT DOESN'T WARRANT A EXCHANGE....? Disgraceful…read morecustomer service. Not helpful in anyway. I'm stuck in stand still traffic because police have stopped traffic on the A1 because of a suicide attempt and June who I spoke to couldn't give myself and my husband who had booked the cinema as a surprise a refund. So I'm currently in standstill traffic, sad news that someone wants to end their life and June couldn't even give me another date to book and also refused to give us a refund. I'm not even asking for money back, I just want another date! This is disgusting service in this day and age. These tickets are expensive and have no decency to book us another date and time because the film has started, thank you so much June for just adding to this ordeal!

The Odyssey in St Albans has almost reached its 1st anniversary and its taken me all that time to…read morevisit. My first film was 'The Lobster', which felt like an appropriate choice for an independent cinema. The Odyssey took many years of fundraising and private backings before it could open, but it was worth the wait. There now stands a plush art deco venue with two levels of seating much like a theatre. The upstairs has rows of seating as you would expect, but downstairs is tables and chairs for a more relaxed feel. At the back there is a bar serving alcohol, hot drinks and snacks. Only downer is the popcorn which is nothing more than ready bagged stuff at a markup (I love cinema popcorn). There's only 1 screen (but a big one) so many films only show for 1 or 2 nights and sell out fast. It's a bit more expensive than the multiplex in neighbouring towns but it is far nicer. A real treat. It may have taken me a year to come for my first film, but I'll be sure to go back sooner.
