This charming place is relaxing and removed from the busy Lawrence scene, yet close enough to arrive quickly. We visited friends from out of state when they stayed here- the dinner was amazing! Fresh, tasty dishes, and plenty of staff service. The views are lovely, and when I was out there most recently, in May '22, they were working on expansion projects. The only downside I can see is the slow internet, and since covid they've had to reduce costs so the 800 # listed somewhere on their website is out of date. This was a great place for my friend's wedding. The rooms are great and all have a different theme to them. The decor was very country. The wedding area was great with natural benches and a nice natural gazebo for the bride to walk through. The reception room was great too! The food they prepared for us was great. Since my husband and I were headed to Kansas City, KS, from Wichita, the Circle S Ranch was conveniently located-- only 45 minutes from Union Station. What's unexpected, when "Ranch" is in the B & B's name, is the luxury of the interior features and design. See my photos! If you're more interested in the breakfast, be assured it's impressively served on a large plate on a charger, piled high with eggs, country potatoes, multiple strips of bacon, a biscuit, a choice of jams to go with the real butter, a carafe of orange juice and a good selection of tea along with coffee. (I'd recommend adding some English Breakfast or Earl Gray to the choices.) While the building has a barn-like feel and is full of true ranch details (like the bison head over the mantel in the dining room and a longhorn steer in the lobby), you'll be surprised by the many elegant touches that add class and comfort. No white hotel towels, but fluffy bath and hand towels and face cloths in the proper color, two bath robes (which you might need for the two hot tubs, one indoors, one out), all the amenities of a quality hotel only more personalized. There's a beautiful mosaic basin on the lobby counter where one tap provides the hot water for your tea. That was a first! There was no TV in the honeymoon suite, and I doubt anyone staying there has ever missed one, since the whole point is to get away into the country. Circle S Ranch is found two miles off the paved highway on a gravel road. We were charmed by the outdoors spaces, the 8 horses, Bailey the dog, and Mary, the owner, her daughter Dakota and our server at breakfast. We thought this inn was almost too good to be true -- not to mention that we had the best room in the place, the Claret Room, for a cut rate price. Thanks, Mary!! Amazing Venue. I went there for a wedding weekend and the stay was great. All the animals that can walk right up to you added a rustic charm and the chapel was beautiful. All the food provided was great and the rooms were comfy. My only complaints was how there were hardly any trash cans in the room for a longer stay and the keypad on the door was glitchy. Otherwise I would definitely stay again on my own. Also, Oscar is the best boy. read more

My girlfriends and I stayed here while we were on a cross country road trip. We are city girls who arrived around 11pm after spending the day in Lawrence and we were terrified driving to the country side ....but we were pleasantly surprised once we made it to the place. We arrived to a cute welcome sign and a well-decorated inn. We are a flexible bunch and found the place to be a little rustic (squeaky floors and thin walls) and I found it a big chilly at night. No one was there to greet us but there was information on where are room was and we had no trouble figuring things out. Breakfast was delicious and we met a nice cowboy who provided suggestions for things to do. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous. We spent the next day exploring and taking lots of photos. This is such a nice escape from the hustle and bustle and a good fit for someone who is down for rustic chic. read more

We came here for a weekend get away from Kansas City and I found the Circle S on Google to mostly positive reviews. And upon arriving the property looked really nice. However after walking around we noticed lots of weeds, areas that were unkempt and cheap outdoor furniture. Our room was nice, however, it was 90 degrees in the room. The owner did her best to get an HVC guy to come out but the room remained really warm. The hot tub is a bit of a joke and sauna is tiny. They claim to have spa services, however, I called the day before to inquire about a massage and no one returned my call. They do not have spa services! In addition when my girlfriend came out to the patio the following morning for a coffee... the patio was littered with played and trash from the previous night. At $215/night we expected something much nicer. The staff is friendly but not very attentive. Unfortunately we won't stay here again and we wouldn't recommend it either for what it costs. read more

The setting is wonderful, but that was almost all that was positive about our two-night stay in April 2013. No one on the office staff was able to greet us, so the cook showed us to our room. The room was roomy, but had nothing covering the cement floor and the door had a full inch gap at the bottom, ensuring that every noise traveled freely between our room and others nearby. So much for a private, romantic getaway! Worse, it was a chilly night, the room had no form of temperature control and we bundled under the covers in our street clothes as the inside temperature fell into the 50s. With no staff on the premises after 7 p.m., nothing could be done to provide any warmth. With standard rates starting at $299/night, one would expect outstanding hospitality and high quality linens and toiletries. That is not what we found at all. On the plus side, the meals were very well prepared (even if no choice was offered). The bar was closed on the first night we were there and a search of all three floor revealed nothing to drink but water. From reading reviews on other sites, it's obvious that our experience was more the exception than the rule at Circle S, so we wish you much better luck! Oh, and good luck checking out minutes before the checkout deadline when the only people in the office area are two preschoolers. read more

I recently attended an office day-retreat at Circle S, and was beyond impressed. My colleagues and I had a full day of business to take care of and this setting made it so much less stressful. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. When we arrived around 9:00am, freshly cut fruit and freshly brewed coffee awaited us; ten minutes later, a huge coffee cake, straight from the oven, was presented to us. I was most impressed with our lunch. I was the only vegan amongst our group (which is not an uncommon circumstance in group dining situations) and was wondering what I would be able to pick from during the lunch that the Circle S chefs served to us. I was shocked that they made me two completely separate, amazing vegan dishes! The first was a large bowl of lentil-bean mildly spicy chili, and the second was a plate of fresh vegetables and probably the best hummus I have eaten recently. They also served a large, fresh romaine salad to everybody. My colleagues were impressed with their dishes as well; I believe they had a spicy tortilla soup dish, as well as a generous portion of vegetarian lasagna (I assume this is what they were eating, because, honestly, I didn't care what they were eating when I was shoveling amazing food into my face in a seriously undignified manner). The Inn itself is relaxing and we toured around the bedrooms available to stay in; all were nicely decorated and spacious. The grounds of Circle S are in the rolling hills of Eastern Kansas and scenic. They also have several bison on the property! I cannot say enough nice things about Circle S, and I plan on going back in the near future for a relaxing weekend. Having a work retreat here made seven hours of work fly by. read more

I've been to over a dozen destination wedding venues and this is one of the best! This place is the perfect getaway for events: the pastoral location is beautiful, the rooms are country cute, the staff are down-to-earth and neighborly, and the food is Kansas-style fantastic! With rolling hills, views of bison, and the passing of long-horned steer, what's not to love?! Admittedly, the first night our room was a bit chilly; however, I knew the temps were going to be in the 30sF and packed PJs, so was prepared. But that's the only "complaint" (in quotes because that's too strong a word!) that I can muster. I can only hope to find myself at another event at the Circle S Ranch because it was perfect! read more

My husband and I had our wedding at the Circle S in June 2013 and we could not have been happier for making this choice! We live in Brazil but I am from Lawrence and my husband is from Boston. We had friends and family coming from all over the world and we really wanted to show them how beautiful Kansas is and not just the inside of another hotel ballroom. To say the least they were all very impressed with the Ranch! Our wedding weekend exceeded all expectations and this was due both to the beauty of the property as well as the quality and friendliness of the management and staff. Our wedding party stayed out at the Inn (they have 12 really nice lodge-like suites) and had so much fun all being together. One of the best parts about having our wedding at the ranch was that you rent the facility for the weekend, so no one is telling you the party must end at 11pm. We went as late as people wanted to and even had an after party at the Inn when the reception ended with music, snacks and a fire pit. This flexibility really helped add to the intimacy of the weekend-- we didn't feel like we were renting the place for an event--it was OUR wedding weekend. The food was wonderful. Jason (the chef) came up with a special Brazilian menu for our rehearsal dinner that was marvelous. We were having trouble decided on the menu so he suggested why not tie in that part of our lives with the meal. It was perfect and again made it feel like it was our unique wedding, we could tailor everything to fit us. Saturday we had a smoked BBQ sit down reception dinner that was fantastic too. Many compliments were given throughout the weekend on all the food! Overall, we simply cannot recommend this place enough. If you like the idea of a ranch wedding it is hard for me to imagine a better venue. As for the management and staff I don't believe it can get better--weddings are stressful but they really helped take a lot of the worries away. My husband and I came here for a winter weekend getaway for our anniversary. This is exactly what we needed and had such an awesome time at Circle S. We had a great room with a nice view of the ranch, lots of space, and an awesome fireplace. The staff was wonderful and so friendly and willing to be as involved or not as we wanted. We took a long walk around the ranch and explored all the land and their buildings which was fun to see everything and not have anything that was off limits. We loved the hot tub in the silo - a fun way to spend a winter evening. We will definitely be back and look forward to our next visit! read more

Our stay was subpar in many ways. Our welcome was lackluster with no orientation to the property and no information in the rooms In general the inn could use maintenance- from doors that don't close properly or fit well to a mattress that was quite old and uncomfortable the place felt like it could use some TLC. The WiFi was really poor and we had no TV in our room. The breakfasts were poorly presented. The food was ok but not up to the nightly rate we paid. The first morning juice and coffee were ready and presented nicely with real cream for the coffee which was great. The 2nd morning we had no juice, coffee wasn't ready and wasn't hot and we had no cream. It's the little things that bring you back- inconsistency, poor communication and a poorly maintained property have us at a place we won't return or recommend especially for the price we paid. If I were to go back I would except to pay half the price. read more

I am going to preface this review with a few positives. The venue is beautiful. It is very spacious and they are working on the landscaping, which is coming along very nicely. The rooms are themed and very cute. One of the things that sold me on this venue was you can have the ceremony and reception there, because I didn't want to have to deal with travelling in between the two. However, there were a few things I was displeased with. First off, they can't seem to hold a staff. Over the course of my wedding planning I dealt with 6-8 different event coordinators, who all told me different things. Things that I was promised by one, the other would say we couldn't do that. They seem very disorganized. Now, for the actual wedding weekend. First off, we paid for the "Big Event". We rented out all rooms for two nights and included in that was supposed to be on Friday night, our rehearsal, we were supposed to have a bon fire and s'mores. One month before our wedding weekend, we had our final walk through. At that time, the event coordinator knew that we were not doing a rehearsal dinner, just the rehearsal. (We were already paying right under $14,000 for this event and didn't want to spend another $18 a head for a dinner). She told us that on that Friday night she would have the s'mores and everything set up by the fire. Come that Friday night, there was nothing set up. Not the biggest deal in the world but it was part of our package and was paid for. Since we rented out the entire place for the entire weekend and about 30 people were staying there, we brought some booze with us, which we had previously asked one of the many event coordinators that we had dealt with and were assured that was okay. There was another issue right before the ceremony, they were supposed to transport his elderly grandparents down to the ceremony site, and there was a huge ordeal about it. ( I did not personally deal with that because I was getting bridal party pictures with our photographer). At one point (on our wedding day) there was another couple being shown and touring the venue..check out is at 11 on Sunday, not sure why that couldn't have waited. Now right before we were checking out, I brought to the owner's attention that there were no s'mores Friday night and asked if we could have anything taken off of our bill since it was part of the package and didn't end up happening. She informed me that the s'mores were part of the rehearsal dinner package and since we didn't pay for the rehearsal dinner we didn't get s'mores. At NO POINT was that ever mentioned or is anywhere in my paperwork. One month before, when they knew we didn't have a rehearsal dinner, they said they'd have that set up. Then she went on to inform me that booze is not allowed. If it isn't allowed, why are the corkscrews and wine chillers in every room? Again, we had previously asked and was given the go ahead. She said since there was a lot of extra clean up that she didn't feel comfortable taking anything off of our ($14,000!!!) bill. I explained to her that we cleaned up and were cleaning up after ourselves, to which she replied "There are quite a few trash bags outside." Um, You're welcome? That means that we are cleaning up after ourselves. Sorry you have to take those to the dumpster? What exactly are we getting for that amount of money? Oh, I almost forgot, on the final walk through meeting (one month before) the event coordinator asked me if I had any plans to decorate the archways. What?! That is not something I was aware I needed to be thinking about, it was never mentioned before that moment. I hadn't budgeted for archway decorations or planned for them so they were bare for the wedding. You'd think for the amount of money people are paying for weddings, they'd at least have something generic they could put up. I don't feel at all that they are worth the money we spent and frankly the conversation with the owner was pretty rude. I had a good weekend (of course all of the loved ones were there and it was great weather). Had a known all of the issues I would encounter, I would have went elsewhere. I'd like to add that there was a lot of left over food from the reception. Not sure what happened to all of that, we paid for it all. Also, be sure to bring walkie talkies , there is little to no service, which is to be expected. read more

The venue is super duper pretty, the rooms are lovely, and the staff is responsive. It also has a somewhat delightfully informal feel. Checking in and out is a casual affair without a big formal lobby desk. It feels a lot like a big home--in a good way. read more

My husband and I were given a gift certificate for Christmas to stay at this ranch. We had scheduled to use it this past Friday, 7/21/13. I no longer have the gift certificate, but it was somewhere in the range of $270.00. We checked into the ranch around 5pm or so and was taken up to our room. We had chosen the Celestial room because we were told that was the only room available when I made the reservations. Seeing as how much the room cost a night, we were excited to stay and expected great things. However, when we arrived, we were highly disappointed. The overall atmosphere of the place seemed ok, but the room was awful. The first thing we noticed was the room was hotter than hates. It had a tiny window AC unit to try and power a big room, on the 3rd floor in the dead of summer. The carpets had stains all over it, the bedding appeared as if it was from the 80's and dingy looking, the baseboards in the room looked dusty and dirty, which to me indicates that it doesn't get thoroughly cleaned and I know this should not be that important, but no TV. I could have lived with no TV if everything else would have been up to par. We did not feel comfortable walking around there barefoot, let alone anything else bare. So, we left. We immediately went down to the receptionist girl and turned our key in. I would think for a room that costs almost $300 a night, it would have been a lot nicer of a place to stay. I am sure at one point in the ranch's history, it was a nice place to stay and worth $300 a night. However, it appears as if no upkeep or maintenance has taken place in years. read more

UNRELIABLE, UNDEPENDABLE! Booked this place well ahead of time for a couple of nights since I had a conference and presentation at University of Kansas. I was sent all the confirmations, approved the proposal on their event planner and a welcome letter too, by their DIRECTOR of events; Diane Little, only to find out, just the day before, that the room was no longer available. Knowing that I was travelling with my 8+ months pregnant wife, they still gave it away after everything was confirmed. And all they had to say was "sorry". I have traveled to many countries for conferences etc, but have never come across such unreliable, undependable staff. read more

Absolutely loved Circle S Ranch! We stayed here for a whole week and the staff treated us like family. Mary was an amazing host and we loved getting to know everyone who worked there. Horse back riding around the ranch was a ton of fun and the massages were extremely relaxing. Circle S was the perfect get away! DO NOT STAY HERE! Unsafe and unclean were the two things that stood out the most. Upon entering we were met by AJ. He told us we were on the third floor in one of the larger, more expensive rooms ( as we did pay nearly 300$ for one night). He opened a door to a stairwell and up we went, except one detail was clearly missing, the railings. There was NO railing on either side wall. It was rather like climbing a wall rather than stairs, someone with any type of balance issue or walking trouble could not get up or down these stairs. There is no elevator and therefore does not meet ADA guidelines for accessibility. When we finally reached the top, we first noticed there was no television was in the room. Had this been advertised as tech free, we would have expected it, but this was supposed to be a normal, but upscale bed and breakfast. Like most people we enjoy background noise, so it was disturbingly silent. I took the bedspread off, as I always do wherever we stay, and discovered long black hairs, 4 lady bugs, and clothing fibers in our bed. Not to mention nearly all 4 pillows behind the bed, clearly not having had the pillow cases cleaned or changed. We thought about calling down on the landline to notify AJ our sheets had not been changed from the previous guests stay. However, we could not call down, because there was no landline phone, anywhere on the third floor. Being so far out in the country, neither one of us had cell service or wifi either. So down we went. AJ just said it was the maids hair, so not to worry?!?!? Clearly this was untrue as I later found brown and blonde hair as well. Wonder how long the sheets had not been cleaned, maybe several guests back? My husband asked and received the wifi information and came back up; however, it did not work on the third floor because AJ had failed to place router extenders on either the second or the third floor. So no internet. As my husband went out for take away in Lawrence, I went to take a bath in the jacuzzi, where I found AGAIN multiple different colors of hair, long and short, and another guests travel size conditioners, half used, from a Sleep Inn. I went down to the first floor and phone my husband asking him to buy cleaning supplies for at least the shower, as it was dirty as well, with hair on the outside wall, and I knew he would want to use it in the morning. It was also very hot on the upper floor, normal as heat rises. So we eventually opened the windows, which in turn blew massive amounts of dust from the cheap curtains, all over the room. Unfortunately they did not knock out the two bright RED ceiling lights. I felt like I was in the red light district, except it was filthier in the b&b. Every other b&b and/or hotel we have ever stayed at, we liked. We are not picky. I am picking this apart though because of all the things that went wrong and were not dealt with by the manager. We are still out $300 and had nothing to show for it, certainly not a comfortable and relaxing evening. The most important thing in this entire post is there is only one way down from the third floor, the railing-free stairwell. Now imagine a fire broke out on the second floor... how would AJ or anyone notify everyone they need to evacuate? He certainly could not climb to the third floor if smoke was already spreading and could not call any of the guest, as their was no landline phones in the rooms. This place is a fire trap. If you are thinking of staying here or hosting an event here, DO NOT until they at least make it safe. We will obviously never be back to this dirty, no wifi, railing free, no television, phone free, fire hazard. read more

Oh, there is not a choice for negative stars. Attended an weekend wedding event here. Staff could not overcome the horrible management and lack of numbers. The place was not clean or maintained. Leaky pipes. Public restroom ran out of paper. No keys or locks for doors. Owner felt free to show rooms to potential guest when they were already rented. Owner's child was a constant presence, felt entitled to eat and join a family event, followed adults into private rooms. No one was available to check out and collect payment. For hours. Those delicious biscuits were bought at Sams club. Not homemade. There was no juice available at breakfast. This is not shabby chic. It is a worn out and neglected facility. The pillows are flat and lumpy. For $150 a night I expect all to be better and protection from the dust bunnies. No housekeeping service provided for multiple days. Protect your towels - you don't get dry ones and forget having your bed made. read more
