I came here back in July with my father and brother for a round of disc golf. In my opinion, this…read moreis a challenging course; but I have only been disc golfing for one year now. Course Layout: The course is situated inside of a pretty heavily wooded area and features a wide variety of challenging shots from vast changes in elevation, to blind shots, to hard dog legs, to a combination of all of the above. Add to that some water hazards, some dense vegetation, and some challenging pin positions and you have a heck of a course. That said, I played extremely well on this course for hittin' it up for the first time. It tested all of my skills, and also challenged me intellectually as well. For me, I seriously had to consider all of my shot options before venturing forth. Just because a particular shot looked easy, didn't mean that it was. With some holes having a water hazard as a back drop, some with massive elevation changes, and some with sloped hills where the baskets were -- nothing was ever as simple as just walking up and throwing your disc. This is a well crafted course Course Layout: 5 / 5 Venue: This course is situated within the Middlesex Township Park in Carlisle. It was hard to find for us the first time because it was our first time in the area, but you want to turn into your first turn, if your coming from the direction where the park is on your left. For us, the venue was very peaceful, and seemingly in the middle of nowhere. There was nobody else on the course, and it was pretty well marked. Each tee box had a pretty detailed sign and each basket had an arrow or some indicator to guide you to the next hole. Be wary though, the bugs here are ANNOYING and brutal in the summer. They will fly in your eyes, your hair, your mouth, your nose, your ear, and any other exposed orifice that they can find. They are the small little eff'ers too, that swarm your face every chance they get. Sun glasses are a must here, even on overcast days. Venue: 4 / 5 Tee Pads / Baskets: These are a big pro of the course. The tee boxes / pads are perfect. Very well laid, long enough for someone with several steps in their mechanics, and they are slightly grooved so you don't have to worry about falling on your butt, even in wet conditions. The baskets are equally as perfect. They are in excellent condition and are the standard for disc golf catchers in the disc golf world. Tee Pads & Baskets: 5 / 5 Signature Holes, etc: This course has a lot of brutally awesome holes. I think it was hole four-ish that featured a hard dog leg left at the bottom of a steep decline, then the tee basket was across a small bridge. Throw your drive too far ( like me), end up down in a giant ditch / creek. There are several other holes on this course that are definitively unique as well. There is a hole with a unique pie wedge-shaped tee pad that gives you the distinct option to play the hole to the right or the left. I played it to the left, and highly recommend that as your course of action -- even if you don't have a 'flick'. Then there is hole 16 or 17. It is a beautiful and scenic shot that has you firing a drive through a picturesque fairway, then crossing a ditch/creek, to then go up a sharp elevation change. Signature Holes, etc.: 5 / 5 Final Thoughts: This may be my favorite local course as it presents such a wide variety of different shots and situations. You will come away from playing here feeling exhausted, both mentally and physically because this course challenges you. Also, it is quite a hike inside these woods. With all the changes in elevation and all of the rough terrain, you will most definitely be getting a work-out. This course is almost perfect, it just suffers from what some other courses suffer from -- angry, little bugs that like to fly in your face...constantly. Despite that, I highly recommend this course.

Local volunteers keep the course well maintained and I've never had a bad experience here (except the occasional lost disc!) Coyote Hills hosts several major disc golf events each year, including an ice bowl in the winter, a tag league from spring through the fall, an ace race in the fall, as well as local and state championship competitions. Players of all ages and skill levels come and enjoy a great time of fellowship together and I've always felt welcome, no matter who's playing. As a park, it's a beautiful hike through the woods too! They also have basketball courts, a splash pad, and equipment for the kids. There's also a nice pavilion and township building that can be rented for events!

Holmes-Foster is a fantastic park to enjoy nature, have a group event, or play with your kids. What it does have are two huge pavilions that you can reserve or just claim as first come first serve, super clean bathrooms, a big playground, and abundant green space and trees. It's a beautiful place to walk around if you want to see some nature but don't have time to drive to a state park.

Second, there's plenty of green space and a great big hill to run up and down for those who have extra energy. Third, there are two separate playgrounds. The one uphill is great for the bigger kids. It has a larger play structure, a climbing wall, a slide, and a basketball court. The one downhill is great for the littler ones. It has a small play structure, a great little "bus" for kids to play in, some ride-on toys, and some swings. What's more - there are bathrooms, 2 picnic pavilions, and a water fountain. You can get to the park two different ways: 600 S. Sparks St. (upper playground) & 901 Westerly Pkwy (lower playground). We usually park in the Westerly lot, which is right across the street from Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church.

PA is full of town parks. Centre County has some of the best in the state…read more Tudek is no exception to that. It has just about everything you would want in a rural park. There is a modern playground. There are athletic courts and fields. There is a really nice walking trail. There are several things that set this one apart, though. It has a dog park, for one. This is something uncommon in this part of the state. The other unique feature is a butterfly garden. It is quite beautiful and scientifically correct for the species of butterfly and bees in this part of the state. There is even a yearly educational program called Wings in the Park which was going on the day we got there. The program had activity stations set up with educational "questions" to help the young and old, alike, learn about the butterfly. There was even a station about bees. This program had information on new methods for growing perennials that are friendly to the butterfly. They had information on conservation efforts in effect in order to save the rapidly disappearing Monarch butterfly. Back to the park itself. The main trail winds through some fields. One of which appears to be a horse pasture. It is really odd, too. You would think with the developments nearby, that you would feel like you were in the middle of a residential area. You don't feel that way. It feels completely rural and relaxing. I imagine this would be a great place to go for a jog. The main trail is paved. But there are little grass covered trails and reflection spots throughout the butterfly garden. So with all this, I can really highly recommend this park. One of the top ones I have been to in along time. I mean... butterfly garden? Yep, with sunflowers, semi exotic looking native birds, and natural beauty, this would be a great place to visit daily.

This park has gotten a recent face-lift, as it gained a new play structure in the summer of 2013…read more It was the result of a joint venture between a non-profit (KaBoom!), the Pennsylvania Municipal League, and State College - built with the help of 175 volunteers, and with the inspiration from kids' drawings! This is a great place to visit if you have active kids, especially if they love to climb. There are all sorts of ladders & tunnels to climb, plus some of the longest slides in State College. The play structures for the younger & older kids are right next to each other, so the kids were mostly running back & forth between them, rather than staying on the structure that was designated for their age group. The other cool thing in this park is an updated merry-go-round. Kids either climb inside and ride that way, or they hang from the ropes/bars, but regardless of how they ride - it seems like fun! The original play equipment is still there, so there are still a few swings just across the field from the new park. Orchard Park is huge - it covers nearly 20 acres, and includes a walking/bike path, basketball & tennis courts, soccer fields, an amphitheater, picnic areas, ... and bathrooms (right next to the older playground.) To reach the new play area, just drive a ways down Bayberry Dr. (from Blue Course), and the playground is right behind the parking area. This was actually our plan B, as we had initially wanted to stop by The Berkey Creamery for their highly ranked ice cream, but didn't feel the extremely long lines there were worth the limited time we had to spend in State College. Admission is complimentary, although there is a nominal fee for parking in the lots. It's a decent sized arboretum/garden for being located on a college campus. There was quite a few flowers in bloom during June when we visited. Depending on your level of interest, the arboretum can be navigated in 30 minutes or upwards of an hour if you're in no rush. I especially liked the viewpoint at the far end of the grounds and the children's garden seemed to be a hit amongst families. There's plenty of benches throughout the grounds to take in the beautiful surroundings. If you love green spaces & gardens, I'd recommend a visit to The Arboretum at Penn State a nice way to kill some time while visiting State College.

Everything is pristinely maintained, with something different and beautiful around each corner. Lots of signage labelling each plant and seating to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. I brought out my drawing pad and even had a few people approach asking if I was part of a drawing group -- it meets every Tuesday (I believe at 10 or 10:30am?) so I happily joined the group as they use the grounds for inspiration of whatever the weeks prompt and reconvene for a group review.

There is even a covered wooden walking bridge across the creek along a walking trail. There is lots of parking. They also have indoor bathrooms that look to be in decent shape. This is a great place to take the kids after picking up a pizza. They can play on the playground after eating at the picnic tables. The playground equipment is modern. There is even a sandbox. The park is great because it doesn't get too busy. That allows for ducks and some of the wildlife to show up from time to time. Lots of shade for the hot Summertime. Also, the stream is nice and cool to put your feet in and cool off.
