This was my first experience working with a smaller regional bank, and it has been very different from what I'm used to. When I was buying a business in Vermont, I took a loan through National Bank of Middlebury. As an out-of-state buyer, I relied on local recommendations and expected a smooth process. However, the loan application was slow and grueling, taking much longer than I had anticipated. A few years later, I applied for another business loan, and it took only two weeks to complete the entire process -- a stark contrast to my experience with NBM. In addition to this, I've experienced repeated delays with ACH payments and outbound transfers. Transfers into NBM process quickly, but transfers out are often significantly slower than what I've experienced with larger institutions -- often taking up to two weeks. Most recently, after selling my home, a payment issued through NBM still hasn't cleared a week later. By comparison, I've moved similarly large sums from major banks, and the funds were available the next business day. Even after depositing the NBM payment into my non-NBM account, I deposited a similar sum, and it cleared within 24 hours. One other significant issue has been the bank's outdated security measures, which feel archaic compared to what I've experienced with other banks. This has made certain processes more difficult than they should be, especially when dealing with electronic transactions or interbank transfers. While I understand that many long-time local customers may be satisfied with NBM's services, my experience has been frustrating, especially when compared to the speed and efficiency of larger institutions. Based on my experience, I would not choose a small regional bank again.

Have to call up bank of middlebury after and have them unlock it on their side. Get your card locked once and you seem to enter into this limbo start of getting locked. From the tellers to the loan officers, I always had such great service, and they really offered a full suite of online banking services for most of the years that I held these accounts. You get the feeling that they just see you as a $$ign. This NBT though is not the ubiquitous VT local because they have Carol. She really had the true sense of Local - treating customers like her neighbors! Very refreshing and for the first time this season I felt more than just $ to VT retailers and farmers. About a month ago, I decided to visit Montreal last minute and needed to exchange USD to Canadian currency. I don't have a local bank and my banks didn't have exchange capabilities in VT. When I called around, I found out that many local banks only provide the service for their members or charge extra (a lot) for the service. More hassle and nickel and diming. Not so at NBT and Carol was so helpful - fair exchange rate and no nickel and diming. When I got there the next day, she came by and said "hello". This is VT I remember and Carol was very welcoming! The exchange was pleasant and I was so happy that I told how great NBT is to everyone that week! At the end of the day, it's about people who make the difference. NBT is lucky to have Carol Costello and I am grateful she helped me. She gets the real meaning of what it is to support Local and has Customer Service down!
