One of the things I love about the Twin Cities is the varied and expansive presence of immigrant owned and operated restaurants. Any seasoned foodie will tell you that the ones tucked away, perhaps a bit more rough around the proverbial edges and missing bells and whistles are where you will find the most authentic (and delicious) cuisine. City Afrique was an INCREDIBLE experience in West African fare. I'm accustomed to food from this region, when cooked here, is often overly spiced, too salty or too hot. I ordered the okra sauce with fufu and it was the best I've ever eaten. And I've eaten a lot of okra sauce. The cook allowed you to add hot pepper as desired and the salt level was subtle and supportive of the sweet fufu and savory okra. I couldn't stop eating it- it was simply a perfect balance traditional flavors. Prices are very reasonable for home cooked West African dishes, which require extensive simmering and taste testing. Without rice, regular size dishes (they have large too) range around $11-16. With rice or fufu, prices range between $19-25. The ambiance and decor proudly displayed select traditional Liberian art and cultural pieces, along with other wall hangings reflective of bigger stores. The host greeted me warmly and shared it was his uncle's restaurant. When I shared my delight with the flavors, he brought out the cook. She was genuinely thrilled that her cooking was appreciated- the sign of a true culinary artist. They also have a small party room they rent out for $500 a night. The food was so excellent! I got the cassava leaf and the fufu. It was so delicious. The portions were huge and the flavor was incredible. Fatu was such a friendly and kind server who went above and beyond! The restaurant was beautiful as well. I recommended it already to many friends! Mmmmm...Liberian comfort food and warm, kind service. Based on the reviews here I was expecting a long wait for food, but at quarter to six on Saturday evening we were the only sit-down customers, with several deliveries and takeouts. The chef greeted us personally, and patiently waited while we worked out the menu. When I ordered togborgee she kindly brought out a sample for us to taste. "It's bitter," she warned. It had a bitter aftertaste, but not nearly as bitter as (for example) bitter melon you find in Southeast Asian foods. We ordered two stews, togborgee with rice and okra with fufu. Both stews were hearty and well seasoned with chicken and goat. I don't what else was in the stews, but we really enjoyed them. The spicy food went well with Jamaican ginger beer. We could barely eat half of each of our dishes--lots of leftovers for later! (Note to vegetarians: none of the menu descriptions mentioned the meats in the stews, and I don't know if meatless is an option.) Other than that, the space was spare but tastefully decorated with a combination of African art and silk flowers with colorful water glasses. The one downside to our visit was the sticky table. I suppose we could have been proactive and asked for a rag to wipe it down. The food was delicious and served with a lot of heart. A nice accidental find. We'll definitely be back! read more

This place is a GEM. Just ate here for the first time and can't wait to go again - it's a little out of the way for us but we'll just have to make the time! For the price of a McDonald's meal, you get homemade cooking bursting with flavor. The portions are more than generous - you could easily feed four people with two meals. We ordered two dishes: a tilapia, plantain and couscous platter, and a chicken with spinach. Both were outstanding... unusual flavor combinations (for us, anyway - I guess they wouldn't be all that unusual to a West African person) that really worked together. I am not a fan of either plantain or couscous - too bland and mushy - but this particular version was so good that I couldn't get enough. Same with chicken - I tend to think of it as boring - but here it was falling-off-the-bone yummy. (We also ordered some Malta's which is apparently a soda available everywhere on the African continent... it is so sweet that it's almost a joke! Tastes like straight up molasses diluted with a little bit of water). The only potential "downside" was that it took some time to get our meal - but given how everything was clearly made to order, it's to be expected as far as I am concerned. We had plenty of leftovers to take home and they were just as good the next day, which only happens when the food is cooked on the spot with no processed ingredients. Just LOST a good customer! Every time I call to make an order I CLEARLY EXPLAIN as specific as I possibly can that I don't want any spicy sauce, I don't even want the spices in the little container they put inside the rice because I have small children who LOVES the food but they CanNot Eat it when it's spicy ... and every time it never fails... they make it spicy! they are very close to where I live but Today was the LAST day! I adore Liberian food and this place is great. Like a few African restaurants around the Twin Cities, the decor very minimal. Eat-in or carry out. It was tough to see from the street, as it's tucked in a tiny strip mall next to a steak place. Who wants steak when you can have Liberian food? Weird. The food is very flavorful they have some off menu items like palva sauce, so if you are looking for something specific, call ahead. Very nice and helpful staff. Apparently they deliver too.
