Do yourself a favor and get the sweet potato fries. SERIOUSLY. I don't care how much you prefer regular potato fries, because I am the exact same way. I will always pick regular fries over sweet potato but this is a glorious exception to that rule. I've had a lot of fries in my life and these are 100000000% my favorite. They are really THAT GOOD. I would come to just get the fries. They are perfectly crispy on the outside and the inside is so sweet which clashes nicely with the salt. in summary GET THE SWEET POTATO FRIES. My go to enter here is the chipotle chicken wrap which Modify to include extra chicken. I workout so I like to get in as much protein as I can throughout the day and the amount of chicken then put in does not disappoint. The wrap is HUGE and I always take the other half home. I had this for lunch and plan on eating the rest for dinner. The service is always great. The guy with the mustache is super nice. Make you feel like you are family. Love him! I know lotsa restaurants serve salmon. I just had a delightful lunch here. I asked for med rare, & it was cooked perfectly. Just a couple of clicks south of "sushi!" Plenty big; menu item was Pesto Grilled Salad.. mess of real fresh, crisp spinach. AND hot grilled veges (incl slices of yellow squash & red onions. The homemade dressing (served on the side) fully complimented this healthy dish. I asked for the med rare version, because it was fresh pacific (don't need to say) wild caught. Our server, Mindee, was a treat. She never hovered, but always appeared at the right moment. Priced right for tis quality. Clean restaurant; tables were not crowded together. read more

I tried to call them to inform them they had overcharged up to $5.00 on every item and heard the owner in the background saying, "I told you not to answer it, I don't care!" The turkey avocado had a smudge of avocado, the croissant was old .... it wasn't soft nor buttery , the potato salad had no flavor so i used a lot of salt , pepper . The only thing i kinda enjoyed was the tomato basil soup , glass of wine . This place got 2 stars because the place actual set up , soup was good. One word: DELICIOUS! We came here to try the restaurant because we are looking to hire the catering portion. I think it's going to be added to the list of regular places we visit. I had the cilantro pesto with shrimp and it was absolutely fabulous. The cilantro was not over powering and the pasta and cause were just delicious I can't wait to go back. My partner had the ribeye sandwich and said "this is a real steak in the sandwich, and all I can think about is how great this bread is!!" The bread was great! The queso app was delicious as well. I stopped by yesterday while getting my car washed around the corner to have a late lunch. I ordered the half sandwich combo: Texas chicken salad (really tasty) on ciabatta bread with a cup of tomato basil soup. The chicken salad was tasty but the sandwich itself wasn't constructed too well. The bread was constantly falling off and I felt like I had to continue "making the sandwich" at the table as I had to spread out the large portion of chicken salad that was served right in the middle and ask for mayo to get some glue between the bread! While asking for the mayo, I tried getting the attention of my waitress (she was really sweet and knew the menu well) but she didn't hear me so a man at the counter heard me and said something like "yeah what do you need?" It wasn't entirely rude but I felt he could've been more professional "ma'am, I can help you. Did you need something?" Tomato soup was extremely plain, maybe even from a can. I asked for cheese and croutons to beef it up and add texture as you'll see in my photo. I love potato salad so I ordered a side. $1.95 for a small scoop was a little much in my opinion. $1.95 might be a fair price if the cup was served to the top. This amazing, long-standing McAllen restaurant has recently been updated & rebranded. I had dinner a few nights ago and the Food and Service were excellent! SERVICE: Our waiter was amazing; very friendly and enthusiastic! He constantly kept refilling our drinks, which for me is a key factor in service! FOOD: For my Entree I order the Chicken Picata. The chicken was extremely juicy and delicious. The angel hair pasta was very buttery and had a strong hint of capers, the lemon caper pasta Sauce was good. Besides the Entree, I also ordered a Caesar salad, which was the Best Damn Caesar Salad I've had in McAllen. The Caesar dressing [IMO] was perfect, not over-powering but not super light either. (It came pre-dressed, which can be dangerous, but for me it was great!) ATMOSPHERE: The waiter mentioned that the dining area is undergoing remodeling changes. So, the food isn't the thing to complain about at City Cafe. The food is phenomenal and I'd definitely come back since their selection is very unique. The thing that had me scratching my head was the pricing. Three people ate lunch here and our bill came to over +$50. Granted, my grandfather did partake in beer and at $9 a 12 oz bottle that seemed to rack up the cost. For comparison, a 20 oz beer at the club level of Minute Maid Stadium in Houston costs $10. And that's because City Cafe didn't even offer a cold glass! I suggest maybe avoiding the alcohol selection at City Cafe which is a little disheartening seeing as this restaurant is open for dinner. However, the food is excellent. I highly suggest the Salmon Salad. Some of the most excellent salmon I've ever had cooked. The greens were slightly wilted, but I loved it anyway. The Brie appetizer is good, but I'd prefer it a little more melty and a little less charred. Too much smoke on the cheese that it sort of masked the Brie's natural yumminess. Though, everyone else at my table seemed to devour the appetizer. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very relaxed. We came at 1:00 pm and it was still crowded from lunch, but we were able to enjoy a pleasant conversation without screaming across the table. I'm surprised people bring their children here, but I suppose the dinner crowd is different from the lunch crowd. I do suggest City Cafe if you're wanting something different. This is the quintessential "ladies who lunch" place. Since we were ladies lookin' for a lunch, we stopped in for some pre shopping sustenance. Weirdly, the more I think about it, the more irritated i am by the experience. And here's why. I ordered their "famous chicken salad" sandwich and my mom got a slice of quiche. The food came out promptly as the place was literally empty. However, what arrived was the saddest version of a chicken salad sandwich I've literally ever seen. A scoop -- still formed like an ice cream scoop -- of chicken salad between two slices of thin dry bread. There was no lettuce, tomato, condiments or care put into that sandwich. I'm no gourmet but if it's not getting dressed up at least try to spread the chicken salad on the sandwich so it looks like some effort went into it. Additionally, the famed chicken salad did not live up to its reputation in the slightest. Dry, without much flavor, I've had airport sandwiches that were about on par. No evidence of the menu's claim of black olives and celery. The fruit cup that came with my mom's quiche featured all the losers of the fruit world: honeydew, grapes and cantaloupe with the pieces of the rind clinging on for dear life. Also, there is a Yelp check in but you'll have to explain what that is to the people behind the counter because apparently they're not told that folks may be hitting them up for a free tea or soda. It all worked out at the end of this long sad story. We had food, we shopped and it was a gorgeous day in South Texas. A lackluster experience isn't a life ruiner. But it probably means I won't be coming here again. read more

Excellent spot. This place is classy with great atmosphere and top quality food. The staff are friendly and the interior is really creative. There are light fixtures made from cheese graters, oversized metal cutlery hanging from the ceiling and all of the menu items are written on giant rolls of butcher paper hanging behind the counter. I live in San Francisco and this and maybe just a few other restaurants in the valley have similar taste to what big city food taste like. City Cafe has been a place I've frequented since it was Yogurt Etc just south of its current location. The menu is very nice, just the right size, and all of the food is very obviously fresh. I've yet to try anything that I don't like. All of the dishes are creative and inventive, and the wait staff is very flexible in letting you add and subtract ingredients to make the meal just right. The appetizers are fantastic, especially the house-made artichoke and spinach dip, though the past three times I've ordered it, I found the artichokes not peeled properly (or inspected properly in case canned artichoke hearts are used) with many fibrous leaves throughout. This happens frequently with artichokes though, and the dip is so creamy and the spinach so fresh that it's not a deal-breaker. The Texas chicken salad is delicious, as well as the dinner menu. I often order the beef tenderloin medallions with green chilies and smashed cheese potatoes. The medallions always seem to be laden with tendons, but this is certainly no fault of the kitchen staff, and are always cooked to the right temperature. Desserts (cake in particular) tend to be a little dry, but are otherwise delicious. The service can be hit-or-miss, but the wait staff is typically attentive and quickly take care of any potential snags in the diner's experience. I definitely recommend this restaurant to anybody who asks, and I'm glad to see it still doing well with steady business! read more

Working a few weeks in Mcallen & happen to stumble upon this gem. It was easy to see the Owner took great pride in creating a welcoming community atmosphere. We tried the spinach artichoke dip which was very good. Also the manicotti which was on special. Even through we split the special he was more than generous with the portions bringing 2 cups of soup, & splitting our entrees into two separate plates. He even brought a lemon pastry sample to tempt us at the end. A nice couple that had went there ever night for 10 years was there and even gifted everyone there a lovely flower. The place is super clean which is something I'm really big on.
