Unlike TSA, these guys are NYPD and a lot friendlier (at least to me). Anyway, if ya gotta come to the courthouse, come to the courthouse, but it not a destination. NOTE: if you are showing up for jury duty and need to report to room 212, bring a book, a tablet, a battery pack and something inconspicuous to snack on (cuz no eating) and sit at the front because at some point you will be asked to line up to turn in part of your summons.

Instead of creating safety and structure, this court process has often felt enabling and retraumatizing. I came to the court seeking protection and support, but the lack of enforcement and meaningful intervention has allowed harmful dynamics to continue. It has been emotionally exhausting, financially draining, and deeply discouraging. Families deserve a court system that is competent, consistent, and focused on protecting families--not prolonging harm.

My whole month of May was stolen from me, not by the continuous cloud producing showers that stayed…read morein the forecast...but by the civic obligation to serve Grand Jury Duty. Grand Jury Duty is different from Trail Jury Duty and it seems to be virtually no way to escape it if you're called, unless you have a felony conviction on your record. No judgement here just giving you a heads up. So be prepared to forfeit 4 weeks of your regular routine for a new one 4 days a week. If I'm honest I was kick'n & screaming like many of us do, when we are called to serve but it wasn't exactly that bad. I mean it can be boring as heck with all the down time. It is like watching paint dry or plucking every hair on your body one by one. Alright, that may be a little extreme but be prepared nonetheless. I used the opportunity to catch up on some much needed reading to help stimulate some brain cells. For the 4 wks you are required to report @ 9am and stay to the close of business which doesn't necessarily mean 5pm. It is until you are dismissed which means it could be before 5 or some times after. You are required to go thru security every time you enter the building and as a Juror you are allowed to enter with food and beverages. If you are serving as a Grand Juror you have access to a refrigerator and microwave. Security moves pretty quickly with the exception of Mondays & Wednesdays when the line can be out the door so arrive early. Everyone including the Court Officers are generally polite and actually nice. When it finally comes to an end you realize it is not actually that bad and you provided some input in our Judicial system. Just A Note: They provide $7 parking vouchers to park at the shopping center across the street which reduces the cost from $25 to $18. My suggestion is 4 days a week for 4 weeks, $18 adds up so only drive if necessary.

It was just the two days and then you are sent back. I had a nice time eating at some of the local spots in my 2 days here. I had not had some Dominican food in such a long time. It hit the spot and for only $5.00 it kept me smiling. In the city , this same meal would've cost me like $8.50. Overall, this is a nice new building. AC was working very well and kept everyone cool. It did feel like slow death only you finish the newspaper and other random things. You are just standing here staring at the these strangers faces.

Today was my day at the Bergen County Courthouse located in Hackensack, where I was able to see its interior beauty. Designed by architect James Reilly Gordon ca. 1911, this courthouse is a fine example of the Beaux Arts style, reflecting monuments of classical Rome and the Italian Renaissance. The building is capped by a copper-coated dome with a cupola and surmounted by a statue. The interior dome of the rotunda area of the courthouse is modeled after the Pantheon in Rome and topped with Tiffany-stained glass. Since this building is rich with history, if you get a chance to be inside, go to the 2nd floor and follow the sign to the rotunda.

Due to WWI, the plans downsized to a smaller hexagonal structure with a rotunda, and completed in 1927. The court is open to the public 9am-5pm when there are cases proceeding and you are able to sit in, though I have not personally done this before. A security scan/metal detector is required when entering the building. God help you if you're appearing as a per diem attorney & you have never been here. First off, it's not the easiest building to find. It's BEHIND the Citibank building. Second, finding the ladies room is a pain in the behind. The court security was friendly enough but to find the courtroom you have to be at, you have to actually go to the clerk's office. They don't post a board or have their security person instantly ask you where you're going as it is in other courthouses I've been to. I felt like I was entering some small town courthouse; it definitely has that feel to it. Then at the proceeding I was at, the judge's interns wanted us to do something that neither party was interested in and that as a per diem attorney, came out of left field. We also could have had our matter resolved before the calling of lunch but it wasn't & I had a prior engagement to deal with. That was extremely annoying. Also, is there actually ANYTHING in the way of good food to eat around here? Where would the attorneys going here often hang out for lunch? My ex worked in this area at one time & I remember that being an issue for him.
