Theatre Upstairs is a totally independent theatre which is dedicated to the support of rising talent. I like this concept. Sometimes ambitions like this can come with a caveat of lack of quality, however this is certainly not the case with these guys. Great place, great value, definitely worth checking out their programme of events.

The décor is clean, comfortable and modern with some nice touches like the lighting that hang down all 3 levels of the stairwell. The bar is as you would expect - a bit Spartan with a very limited selection - including just 2 beers on tap - Guinness and Heineken. It was disappointing, but then, you don't come for the drinks do you?

It's pretty slick and has all of the comfort that you would expect from a purpose-built theatre. Like many new theatres, the seating is tiered downwards towards the stage which is on ground level so you won't have to crane your head to see. The programme is varied, and includes productions by children's story-tellers, local singing and dancing groups and touring drama troupes. This summer, it even includes an evening with a psychic medium! I saw a really professional and smooth performance of Irvine Welsh's 'Babylon Heights' here a few years ago. The building also boasts a bright gallery space.

No more standing in the foyer fiddling with your phone until your theatre date arrives - you can coolly browse Connolly's selection till the late one shows up. The interval drinks are served in the bookshop, providing an intellectual backdrop for your half-time analysis. Or, you know, for eying up the other audience members. The theatre itself is an intimate space - you should have a pretty good view of the stage wherever you're seated. The prices are a bit lower than in the larger Dublin theatres, and you'll get to see something a bit different. A charming little venue, worth checking out.

It prevents a bottleneck of people thru a main stairway which is usually the case in older venues. We sat all they way up high. 4 tickets. Took our kids to Aladdin. No problems at all with hearing the actors or seeing them. The bathrooms were completely clean. The drinks were reasonably priced. Drink are not allowed into the searing area. Only outside before the play begins or at intermission.

Had a wonderful evening. It's a bit sways from downtown Dublin, so you'll have to drive here. Buses won't be operating by the time you get out.

Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray is exactly what a community arts centre should be. It finds a good…read morebalance between local productions and those of professional theatre, dance and musical groups. It screens a decent selection of art-house films every Monday night (alas no popcorn!) and it showcases the work of diverse artists in the gallery upstairs. Local singers, dancers, actors and musicians, who were previously forced to perform in ill-equipped school halls, now have a professional theatre at their disposal. Troops of mini dancers, wannabe starlets and aspiring musicians tread the same boards as professionals, and they don't have to get changed in a grotty school toilet anymore! The building itself, just off Bray's Main Street, is modern and bright, and the aroma of coffee from the Betelnut Cafe greets you as you enter (The Betelnut also offers drinks at performances). Some people find the seats a little bit uncomfortable after a long stretch so bring a cushion if the show has a long running time, and try to get an aisle seat if you have long legs!

I went to see Bjork's Biophilia (highly recommended for fans of hers, and non-fans alike). The sound was brilliant and the screen clear. It's a nice small size as well which is great, and good value for money. A stroll along the prom, a bite in Platform Pizza, and a show in here, and you'd have a near perfect night tbh!

It makes you feel like you need to whisper... *hush* Upstairs is a different crowd altogether - an intimate bar with big windows, perfect for people watching in Temple Bar. Small but good selection of beer too, my mates enjoyed a Brooklyn beer while I guzzled back a glass of crisp Sauvignon Blanc. Note however the bar will be closed for the time a show is going on upstairs so plan your visit accordingly!

It's well worth keeping an eye out for what goes on here, some small but interesting productions pop up from time to time. A considerable part of their programme is offered for free. Like other people said, the entrance feels a bit uninviting for some reason - is it that you're immediately faced with the reception desk, their gatekeeper? Or the tables to the side, surrounded by books, where a lot of times a sort of private lecture seems to be going on? Whatever it is, don't be put off by it, the members of staff are quite nice. I can attest to the versatility of the different rooms, as they are completely transformed to better suit whatever they're hosting. One month there's a huge installation making use most of the space and the next you have a stage and rows of theatre seats. There's a small café too, and the area by the big windows upstairs, overlooking the street and bathed by its light, is a good place to sit and relax for a while, a lot more relaxing than the tables downstairs.
