I have to say I am really biased. I have lived here for 51 years and still live it, flaws and all. No place is perfect in its entirety or for everyone. But from food and fun, education facilities from Pre-k to PhD, Boulder has it all. It would be nice if more things were affordable to more people and personally, I would like less snow but I suspect I am in the minority on that one. Visit and test it out before making a decision to stay. Hopefully some of our flaws will be solved someday. Downtown is fun as are the foothills. read more

Boulder, the lynchpin of the hipster revolution in Colorado a few years ago and the continuation of the California-cation of the state. Outdoors 5/5 Road infrastructure 3.5/5- lot of potholes, cracks, and construction hamper the drivers and residents Downtown 3/5 it's nice but the unhoused population loitering around constantly is an issue; they even boarded up and control the one public bathroom on the shopping street. It's a great look to see the dichotomy of the upper middle class elites against the druggies walking around. read more

Driving is starting to become a big problem here! YUCK! This is the thing... Boulder is charming, always has been.... but it is way too expensive! The food The activities The parking The shopping The cost of living.... All of it! Come to a free outdoor festival or just try to window shop and even that's too expensive. Super sad. When I came to visit back in 2009 I wasn't so sure what I thought of the pace or way of life here in Boulder. It has taken this East Coast girl a bold move (literally) to really "wake up" to the amazingness of Boulder and the folks that thrive here. Aside from countless delicious restaurants there are even more varied activities and experiences available. From sock puppet making parties, to hoopy hour (hula hooping happy hour), free fly fishing trips, fantastic outdoor movie festival premieres (yeah REEL rock), burlesque, chocolate making classes, mushroom foraging forays - I really feel the opportunities are endless for those that wish to seek. The natural beauty and accessibility to the mountains and great local outdoor excursions is a given. Living somewhere where being healthy is a priority and work-out clothes are considered "actual clothes" has been a dream come true to me. I also greatly enjoy the approachability of people here and nothing quite beats the "free hugs" often found on Pearl Street. read more

Reading some of the reviews was funny. I never seen so many contrasting reviews. I guess you either love or hate Boulder. I love Boulder. I visited for about a week, and it's great city! The scenery is amazing. The food is great. And there's a ton of things to do. For nature lovers, Rocky Mountain National Park is about an hour or so away. If you don't want to leave the city, you can visit the Flatirons for some great rock formations and hiking. Boulder seems like a healthy city. I guess you have to be since there's so much hiking and nature stuff going around here. If you don't take advantage of that, it would be a waste. Sure, there is a ton of pretentious, high hipsters here. But what major, cool city doesn't? Just grow out your beard, wax those mustaches, wear your North Face or Patagonia, and fit right in. I'm impressed by the food at Boulder. There's a lot of talented chefs here with a lot of good restaurants. Heck, even the Asian food here is good with Chimera, Flower Pepper, and others. I was surprised how good everything was around here. In the center, there is Pearl Street Mall. It's a cool area with a ton of local shops. There's a lot of cool stuff there. The people seem chill here. I haven't encountered any rude people that other reviewers have mentioned. I mean, weed is legal here. Maybe they all chilled out since then. I've been to a lot of major cities in the US. Boulder is in my top 5, maybe top 3. read more

So this is my second trip to boulder in a month so i feel im starting to get a feel for the city. let me just share a single story. I was lost, looking for a restaurant and desperately fumbling around on my iphone trying to get my bearings. I happened to ask a person walking by me what the street facing us was. He replied it was 30th. i thanked him and then he asked me if i was looking for something specific. I stated i was looking for the "boulder chop" this was his reply "Yeah, that sounds like they serve meat - i'm a vegetarian" then he turned and walked away without another word. wtf boulder wtf. so yeah, that generally describes a lot of the attitude i feel here - it's kinda funny as i come from cali where i thought the douchebaggery level was pretty high. i will give this town three stars though because of the fantastic restaurants - boulder is truly a foodie town, the lovely downtown area - the fact that the mork and mindy house is blocks from my hotel AND the catacombs bartender made me a nice hot toddy so not everyone i met was as pompous as the above described jackass. read more

Boulder is a very eclectic city, it has a lot of different tastes, style, genres. Many come here for school, CU Boulder being one of the top universities in Colorado or come here to work, Boulder is the regional headquarters for such fortune 500 companies such as Google, Microsoft and Whole Foods or come here for the mountains or the many many miles of hiking, biking or walking trails, or the world class shopping malls and restaurants, There is something here for everybody. read more

Beautiful place. However, overzealous traffic-revenue efforts are one of many degrading qualities. Following a weekend walk with aging in-laws, we received a notice that a van had been taking pictures of us, citing we were "speeding at 35 in a 25." Any calculated expenses ought to take this into account. The message seems clear: visit today, pay for it tomorrow, don't come back. read more

Paris is the City of Lights. New Orleans is the City of Red Light districts. Boulder is the City of Red-Light Cameras. These cameras threaten the driver at nearly every major and minor intersection of the heart of the City. Whether you've come to Boulder to shop, dine, stroll or hike, you'll have to weave your way through a maze of red-light cameras to get to your destination. The company running these uncertain visitor-nabbing machines is located in Tempe AZ--American Traffic Solutions--and has what, some 300 cities in tow, I believe their video brags. I'll admit to having paid a red-light infraction fine to ATS-Boulder, though I am nearly certain I was innocent. These red-light cameras certainly temper the fun anyone has in going to Boulder--or in living in Boulder. In fact, Boulder is fraught with off-putting examples of its inhospitable nature: bearded professors muttering senselessly as they stumble pell-mell into you at cross walks; errant bicyclists who jingle their bells and curse; a bountiful police force eager to offer you additional citations to go with those you acquired under the red light cameras; store prices as high as the locals, which makes one wonder why this is the derelict and drifter capital of the nation. The good side of Boulder may be that there are "Elite Running Shops" and outdoors stores for those who insist on marching up hills to get higher than the 5400-ft. altitude and their medical cookies now take them. And where else can you find gourmet coffee shops serving low-end Sanka and mine-cut Nescafe? I'd recommend avoiding Boulder altogether and doing your shopping and fun visiting in the picturesque and genuine Denver suburb of Wheat Ridge or better still, in Colorado Springs, where people are down to earth, where shopkeepers and prices are welcoming, and where there are truly some old towns and buildings to enjoy. Near Colorado Springs, you'll find Pike's Peak, the glorious Broadmoor hotel, 1920's health spas, Indian red-rock dwellings, and so on. The Air Force Academy is nearby, and is fun to visit, though its souvenir-shop prices might make you think you were back in the costly haunts of Boulder--or that maybe you hadn't just invested in a tee-shirt, but had just bought up the last F-16's not sent gratis to Egypt. Like a lot of people living in the suburbs of Denver, we've given up on the pretentious, arrest-happy, radical and supercilious town of Boulder, and now head South to 44th Avenue, Tennyson Street, or further to "The Springs" for a day's recreation and boutique shopping. I recently visited Boulder, and am still impressed (after 20 years from my last visit), with the overall beauty of this amazing city. It still oozes a healthy lifestyle with all of the bikers, hikers, runners, and walkers. It's definitely more "green" these days, in more ways than one:) In addition to the amazing scenery, and plethora of outdoor activities to soak in, Boulder has some great restaurants, and bars. Trust me, we tried a lot of them, and were mostly impressed with all of them. My only minor complaint with Boulder (deducting 1 star) is the outpouring of angry liberals, that litter the Pearl Street Mall area. I mean, come on, take a f'n shower, and stop it with your ugly looks of discontent, or disdain, directed towards anyone that doesn't adhere to your lifestyle. If I want to jaywalk,- yep, I will. Don't yell at me; keep your comments to yourself. Oh, and the Subarus and Prius' with Obama-Biden bumper stickers everywhere...ha, why would you blatantly, and so proudly, advertise outright failure!?!? {liberals getting really angry now} I'm sure I'll get some evil hate messages for the paragraph above, which will prove my point to be correct. I have loved living here for the last few years. So many pockets of great food, vibrant music, and ways to get active outdoors. I'm sad that they have started charging for parking at trailheads for non local license plates and traffic can be horrible especially when school is in session. The people are always friendly but sometime can be a bit jaded from living in the Boulder bubble too long. Despite all of this, I'd highly recommend living here if you can afford it for visiting to enjoy everything the city has to offer. read more

I just got back from a visit and every time I leave I get sad. Some day I will live in Boulder. There are so many amazing people. My best friend lives in the mountains and the views cant be beat. As for the town..its flippen awesome. I love wandering around on Pearl Street. There is so much beauty all around it just makes you smile. I work, live and breathe so far away from City of Boulder-- Yet, I take the time to come and enjoy the very nice momentum of Boulder's traffic and people. My hubby lives a lot more decently close to Boulder than I do-- 8 miles away. I live 24 miles away, possibly more. My family only would come to Boulder if we were to hike or go to the rivers nearby. As I progressed in age, I started to enjoy the access of driving here. There are lots of wonderful people who were incredibly welcoming. Occasionally only a few bad apples here and there. Like anywhere. I hate entitlement. The Pearl St. Mall is one of my main favorites. I loved the theater, the bookstores, the view of the mountains up close. I enjoy the winter and summer. It's very calming. Unfortunately, a very beautiful pageant queen died in this city. However, we visit her house here and there. This is where tourists come and go. I am just lucky enough to have this place an hour away! read more

I moved to Boulder in Summer, 1974, before the Pearl St. Mall, when a teen could ditch high school, smoke cigarettes and drink coffee at Fred's all morning, and with even a shabby fake ID could drink at Potter's or Shannon's at night. The Good Earth night club on Pearl St. showcased the best jazz stars in the country; there I saw Eddie Harris, Esther Philips, Stanley Turrentine, Grover Washington, Jr., and more. The Gondolier was on Broadway just south of Arapahoe, and the Sink was Herbie's Deli. You could smoke pot at Round the Corner on the Hill (and everywhere else). Taj Mahal played Tulagi's frequently. Flannel shirts for Fall at Starr's didn't cost $88 like they do now, and if Starr's was too expensive, you could go to Joslyn's near the Post Office. When not sneaking into bars, you could take a high school date to Tico's for a respectable $10 dinner before going to Eben Fine Park to park and make out, or to the drive-in at 28th and Lee Hill Rd. The base of Lee Hill Rd was all Green Belt. Nerdy Paul Danish (was that his name?) and his comb over hairdo could be seen walking the streets of Boulder. There was Bill Galucha's saddle and cowboy stuff store next to Ideal Market, where Radda Trattoria is now. That was before anyone had heard the word or could spell "Trattoria." My usual morning consisted of hitchhiking or driving from Boulder Heights to the Aristocrat at Broadway and Spruce, for an obscenely huge breakfast with Gus or whatever his name was screaming at the waitresses and pounding the handle of his spatula on the counter: "Mary, 25, Gddrace, 42, pick up now!", and then checking in at Boulder High to see how long I had to stay before gathering pals and heading for Fred's. We used to jump the fence and skinny dip at the Elk's Club. Our city league softball team was named "Fruits of the Loom," and we played in orange t-shirts and boxer shorts. For a while, Rick Reilly and I co-hosted "Panther Party" on KBOL on Wednesday nights. Together, for money, we hired ourselves, our chain saws and Rick's green 1950's Chevy pick-up out to mountain land owners and trimmed dead branches off pine trees. The words "drunk driving" had not entered the lexicon then. Most of us are lucky to be alive. Many of our high school diplomas should have been gift wrapped. Somehow, I was the President of the BHS Class of 1976 - the kid who gleefully had moved from Highland Park, Illinois, two years earlier. I called Senator Gary Hart and asked if he'd speak at our graduation, and he did. It was America's Bicentennial, Colorado's Centennial, and Boulder High's 100th graduating class. My Dad kicked me out of CU in 1977, when he said my straight A's freshman year were unimpressive and the school too easy for me, given that I'd skiied so much with my Sewall Hall pals. He told me if I wanted to stay I could pay for it myself. I went to the University of California, because it was on the quarter system, so I could ski during Winter quarter and be back in Boulder with my friends, many of whom to this day never realized I'd "left." I returned after college for three years, before I moved back to Chicago in 1983 for law school. My Sewall Hall gang has had a 20th, 25th, and 30-year reunion. I'm sure we'll have one here for our 35th. Boulder is so different now. We all know how. And why. But it's still breathtakingly beautiful with the best climate in the country, and it's been my thrill to spend the last 10 days here with my 10 year-old son, introducing him to Chatauqua Park, the Flatirons, Flagstaff, Nederland, Peak to Peak, Blue Lake, and more. We saw a mountain lion his first day here. Recently, I have been planting business seeds in Denver and Boulder, and I am so happy to be "back," sort of...if I ever "left." read more

I love living here in spite of the incompetent, insolent city services attitude--and don't even get me started on the BPD--what a joke. HOWEVER--- I noticed a sign on 28th st. in the area of Iris ave today that said it -28th-would be closed on 6.29 starting at 7 am. Since I go south on 28th every Sunday morning I was concerned about what alternate routes would be available--no info on the signs, so I called the BPD--they do traffic control right? so they should know. no such luck--they have no idea--didn't even seem to know the street was closed--suggested i try transportation--even gave me the phone #--sadly, one that was no longer in service,. So, I went to the transportation section of the website and used the email question option. Oh joy, I will hear from someone by July 10--I'm assuming it's 2014 but who knows For a city that used to brag about being in the forefront of the online communications revolution, we are probably in the same grouping as say, Biloxi, MS while Longmont,, long sneered at-has municipal broadband and utilities all without the angst and posturing we have endured lo these many years.. It is time for a system wide attitude revision process within the City of Boulder staff. I suggest we change the city's method of electing council members from at large--read the academics from the Hill and Plan Boulder savants--to a geographic ward system so that those of us who don't jones on local politics can still have our say on who represents us. read more

Today, I attempted to return an item that I purchased yesterday at Art Mart Gifts located on the Pearl Street Mall. Unfortunately, it was a wasted effort because when I was asked if I wanted my receipt yesterday, I said "no." and therein lies the problem. At the time of my purchase I was not informed of the written notice that was taped to the check out table nor was I verbally informed of the consequences of returning an item without a receipt. My hope today was to EXCHANGE the item that I purchased yesterday for a different color. I did not want to return it, I did not want my money back nor did I want a store credit, I just wanted a different color. Ironically, the color that I wanted was actually more expensive so Art Mart would have made a few extra dollars had they agreed to make a simple exchange. My question...why did something that could have been so simple result in a hard and fast, no exception consequence. I'm a long time resident who makes every attempt to support my local businesses and our local artists. Receipt or no receipt, a simple exchange could have been a "win-win" for all parties involved. Bottom line...read the fine print, take your receipt and don't expect any simple, common sense solutions. read more
