To get to the actual viewing area, go East from Marfa on US-90 and you'll see it off the highway on the right. There's a nice roadside building with a parking lot, bathrooms, a few signs on the strange history of the lights, and a nice viewing platform with some built-in binoculars. There's plenty of space for people to stand or sit, some people even sat out camp chairs, but it is open air so be prepared if it's cooler or windy (we were freezing over New Year's with the wind gusts)! The Marfa Lights are such a cool mystery in West Texas and I'm so glad we stopped here on our way back from the McDonald Observatory's star party, even if we didn't get to see the mysterious lights for ourselves... "I want to believe!"

The Lights are supposedly not like the Aurora Borealis which I have seen. They have been described as glowing orbs. I have heard many unusual and some humorous possible explanations, but there are still only theories... I took my girls with me on 2.16.2025 to try to catch a glimpse. Our luck was non-existent. I encourage you to visit The Marfa Mystery Lights Viewing Area, a few miles outside of Marfa, TX. And I know many folks won't have time to do this, but visit the viewing area during operating hours, then return a bit before sunset for the possibility of a light show. Drove down this road from Marfa to Ruidosa with the Tacoma two days ago (end of October). Tara's…read moredirections were spot on. The first (close to) 30 miles are actually paved highway, FM 2810. It then turns into county road 10, a gravel road. Which was in pretty good shape -- the roughest part are the 10 miles that go through Pinto Canyon Ranch, followed by another 10 miles or so of nicer gravel road. While I enjoyed putting the Taco into 4WD for better handling, I think that most regular clearance vehicles would be just fine if you know how to drive on those roads, it's dry, and you take your time. Definitely fine for something like an Outback or Forester. I passed one Kia van-style vehicle, which eventually caught up with me while I was enjoying a Lonestar at the General Store (aka Hot Springs Airport) in Ruidosa. No other vehicles encountered. Took me about 1.5 hrs, just like Google Maps had suggested. Pretty views, but not nearly as exciting as I had expected... :) Lastly, I drove back to Marfa via Presidio. But without actually going into town in Presidio, just staying on the highway. In hindsight, that seemingly took longer and was quite boring, I should have just gone back the way I came. ;-)

James Dean. Rock Hudson who is in the yellowish 1951 Ford Custom Convertible Coupe with a cowboy hat on. What deliciousness for the eyes. The three were stars in the 1956 movie, "Giant." It's actually a very entertaining movie (based on a novel) with several other great actors. Even in roadside mural form those famous and now deceased Hollywood actors were beautiful... There are other murals of a cowboy with a small herd of bovine and the Reata ranch house. The movie was filmed nearby. I heard the music clearly when I drove up to the speakers and turned off my Jeep's engine. You don't even need to get out of your car. *** Do not go onto the ranch property without calling them first to obtain permission. No "please" about it. It is illegal to trespass. *** While the ending is a bit abrupt, I highly encourage you to watch the short video on the "A Tribute to Our Founder" link about Oscar S. just go here. escape the donald judd (i call them dud) groupies in marfa. stop by before big bend…read more by necessity this post must be long. the "the deng end a nowhere," as i heard Ruidosa called by a local cowboy, had me and Buddy agog for more than 24 hours AFTER we had left, and cursing ourselves for not bringing our camera. still. jeez. the cantina is a beat down little a bar in a tiny town set against mountains and mesa. the sky is robins egg blue. the ruins of an adobe church lie across the street. mexico is one canyon over. it's ridiculous. inside the bar you'll find drunk cowboys, and the proprietors, a weathered blonde dude with a handlebar mustache and enormous hat and his mexican wife with a waist-long river of loose hair. they're totally magazine ready. there's a framed portrait of willie nelson and a very popular karaoke machine. the cowboys WILL try to yoke you to that karaoke machine. yep, no typo there. the cowboys are nuts for 1)fresh blood and 2)their karaoke. they entertain visitors and sing drunkenly to the machine all day long. here's how it goes: drunk cowboy: you like singin? you (who doesn't know a country song from slovenian lullabies): uh. not drunk enough. cowboy: me neither, and i like singin to black sabbath. you're cool. in the meantime, another drunk cowboy (we sense a theme here) approaches Bud, throws a hundred dollar bill down on the bar and says, I hear you're some real pool shark. one of our new friends treated us to tumblers of syrupy reisling that he had stowed away in the hosts' fridge. when that was done, and because cowboys are generous, he brought out another. by that time Bud had won at pool--beating an inebriated cowboy is definitely a sad sad joke -- and we had dinner to grill back at the Chinati Hot Springs where we where staying. oh why did we buy that bourgeois little imported California artichoke and cardboard chicken breast when we could have stuck around Ruidosa to watch the melon sunset and drunk cowboys wailing 'Satan's sitting there he's smiling' into microphones? when we left they came out and waved us off like old friends, though they did try to tempt us to stay for dinner. Buddy was drooling like a golden retriever when he noticed the host was slow simmering dinner on a small mesquite fire outside (smoky unctuous carne guisada). a neighbor had brought a chocolate sheet cake. probably duncan hines but who cares. apparently the host cooks for everyone because he just likes 'feedin folks.' oh, i did ask what the population of ruidosa is. answer is 5. come armed w/ good tires. there's more than thirty miles of gravel en route.

Here was bar in the middle of nowhere. My sister, husband an I went in for a beer and there was a nice lady serving the drinks but no one else in there. They had a wide variety of German beer. Once again I was surprised. Since my back had been aching on the drive I went out to walk around the surrounding desert. And what do you know????????? There in the middle of nowhere I found a 20 dollar bill. I was in shock! What luck! Where did it come from?Did it blow there? Did a drug cartel person loose it? Did a customer to the cantina loose it and then it blew in the desert? But there was no one around...anywhere... so I ended up keeping it. I considered maybe God put it there to help someone who might be lost in the desert and need something to drink.. The next year we made a trip there and were surprised to find two women customers having a drink. The girl running the bar was into making leather purses and wallets. I swore I would come back there and have my birthday party at the cantina but none of my friends wanted to go out there in July because of the heat. We plan to take our German friends out there when they come to visit. What a place!!

Marathon, Texas is where Big Bend and dark skies meet!…read more Alas, the world's smallest Target is no more. Marathon used to be the proud home of this architectural marvels, but the land owner smashed it up. Must've been a door-buster sale! The skies here are especially dark. Supposedly, these are the darkest skies in the United States! Marathon is one of the most remote places in the world, without the Northern Lights that light up the sky in the more remote parts of Alaska. This is dark, and remote. Marathon was named after Marathon, Greece, where the sea-faring town founder thought the landscape looked similar. This small town is just a turnoff from Big Bend, and is sort of the last bit of civilization you find when entering the park from the East. Be sure to check out the metal artwork in the center of town! This town is also home to the Cabrito Cookoff- where they cook up goats. I've never been, but have heard that it's the Greatest Of All Time! (GOAT)

Excellent place! We stayed here with a 3 and 5 year old. They had a great time exploring the area,…read morelooking for lizards and checking out the pool. The staff were extremely helpful and very friendly. Even guests here made everyone feel like a little family. A group of adults (hunters most likely) played with my son in the pool for a good hour. The cafe was delicious. I was honestly expecting things to be frozen and ok quality, however everything was made from scratch. We had the chicken fried steak and you could hear the woman pounding it. The pancakes were probably the best I've ever had. The woman at the front office gave us a thing of gas, and in return we just had to fill it back up for her. So advice: fill up when you can. It's about an hr to the nearest gas station. I can't wait to come back!
