Sound in the library itself, in the very farthest corner, was very loud. When that crowd finally moved elsewhere, the librarians themselves sat and engaged in a loud conversation at the circulation desk. It was impossible to concentrate on my reading. If even a library can't be a quiet place to concentrate on a book, what's left?

Today, stands a nice, modest little library, complete with books of all genres for all ages, especially those reflecting the culture and color of New Mexico. In almost very city a trip to the local library is a must!…read more With its charming exterior, Santa Fe Public Library is a welcome sight when walking around historic Santa Fe. The interior is clean and well lit, and new book titles easy to find. We came in from the cold to warm up and to look at all the community flyers. Bathrooms are located on the ground and second floors, which also has some historic information. I wish we could've spent longer in here but metered parking only covered us for two hours!

The Southside Library has the best (and biggest) bookstore for low cost book sales. I remember the…read moredays in the 70's and 80's spending BIG bucks on artist's and museum books. Found MANY travel and museum and books of artiwork at this bookstore, as well as religion, new age, science fiction, mystery, detective, etc. You can just about find anything you're looking for. All sales are plowed back to sponsor programs for kids and adult programs and activities at all Santa Fe Libraries.

Has the friendly personnel been changed for some old grouches? Stacks included a wide range of western history by some well-known authors. I went while city voting was being done, but luckily they have plenty of parking so I had no issue finding a spot. You approach a librarian for a private room, which thankfully they had available. The WiFi was a tad spotty, but you are out in deep Rio Rancho so what do you expect! Kids area was large and clean, they even had an outdoor playground area. I also loved that they had a little bookstore on site. Keep in mind it is a $10 minimum for credit cards. I will def be back to work when I'm in the area!

They have a wonderful selection of books, spanning a wide range of genres. You could spend a long time just browsing the shelves, looking for new books. Something that I thought was awesome, is that there's even a dedicated "teen room" for patrons under a certain age to hang out in and read. I'm too old to go in there, but you can see from the outside that it's well stocked with books and even has computers (for use with a library card).

My issue here was with the baby/toddler story time. In the state we were before, the libraries we visited, had realistic expectations of BABIES during baby/toddler story time. They were allowed to get up and move around, crawl, but here at this library, they are expected to be little robots and sit in place and not be loud. On our last visit, my heart absolutely broke for a little boy who was a little older (but still younger than 5). He was there with his mom and younger siblings and after the lady leading baby story time finished the book she was reading, she called this little boy out in front of EVERYONE and told him he needed to be quiet while she was reading so the other babies could listen. Mind you, I was sitting 5 feet away from him, and didn't even realize that he was making any noise while she was reading. I even asked my husband who was right there with me afterwards and he said he didn't notice him at all either. This little boy looked like he was going to cry after that and completely shut down, not able to enjoy the rest of the activities. He wasn't even disruptive and the lady leading storytime made it seem like the babies she was reading to were inconvenienced by him. With that being said, maybe books that are age-appropriate for babies and toddlers should be read instead of short stories which are too long for their attention span. This was not the first incident where it seemed very unrealistic for children of this age being told to be quiet or sit still, but this was the final straw, and we will not return to this baby story time because of it.
