But from the beginning...St. Lawrence was originally a church founded in 1897 on the site of a former ice rink, in the heart of Munjoy Hill. The Front Room is across the street for easy pre-show food/beverages. In 2001, the non profit group Friends of the St. Lawrence re-opened the property as a 110 seat theater. I attended the Nutcracker Burlesque. Mistakenly thinking I was going to a strip club, I downed two strong Manhattan's before. After entering, you immediately encounter the bar, with many affordable options for wine and beer. Unlike Merrill Auditorium or any local theater I've been to, you can bring the drinks to your seat. And I think literally everyone did. I haven't seen such a tipsy, hooting and hollering crowd since Rock of Ages on Broadway. It's a smaller theater and not exceptionally nice, but the lights and sound were great, and you just know the people running it are passionate. There are no assigned seats, so you risk being in proximity to Falmouth soccer moms who won't slide over one seat to make room. Still, there's something charming about this quaint theater, with none of the stuffiness of Merrill. I'll be back.

Maybe 200+ seats. You can hear and see from every seat. If you are super excited about seeing an act that is coming there, I strongly recommend getting tickets. Make sure you get there early, as most shows are seat yo self. They have a bar with wine, beer, and snacks. There are also 5 or 6 restaurants in the vicinity that are great for pre-show tapas or appetizers. There is no parking lot, so it's on street parking in the super popular "East End". Give yourself a lot of time for driving around and scoping out a spot.

A work in…read moreprogress The Walker Memorial Library is Westbrook was constructed back in 1894 from private donations from the Walker family. Lots of libraries during that time period were built by money from individual citizens or families. The library is lovely from the outside, a huge and looming Gothic type of structure that was typical of the time. And like many lovely libraries built over a century ago soon proved to be too small so various additions were added over the years. The library is once again being renovated to make it more efficient and user friendly for the twenty first century. Unfortunately that means the very old part is going to be closed to the public for a while. Too bad, because as far as I'm concerted that is the best part. The library still is pretty cool but not nearly as large as it looks from the outside. Still has just about everything you would expect from a library but you kind of have to put up with the construction being done. Hard to really give this library it's full due. It does have some very cool windows, lots of flowers both inside and out and some friendly librarians. Not a whole lot of books and other materials or cool places to sit but then a large portion of the cool library isn't available. Hopefully the money will be raised and the work finally completed and the venerable, historic and lovely old library will once again be ready to continues into the next century.

Lots of boutiques with lots of interesting items, some we felt overpriced, but others not so much. Some very appealing restaurants, lots of nautical-themed establishments (duh!) and easy walking. Parking, not always so easy, and it pays to be cautious crossing the very busy streets although every driver we saw seemed courteous to pedestrians. We wound up buying some nice summer clothing, shirts and hats, and got an excellent lunch recommendation from one of the store owners. We also found the public restroom clean and convenient. Our experience was a good one, and remember, that beautiful water is always just a stroll away. On the Fourth of July weekend we can imagine it may get just too crowded, but mid-June worked for our group.

After finally visiting, I see why this is a favorite vacation spot of Presidents! Quaint, historical, beautiful, small seaport and fun are the best words to describe! The walk up and down made me want to come back! Lots of touristy shops and restaurants. Many are set up to provide quick service to those on a short timeline. A few tours are available. Everywhere you turn and look is something that would make an artistic photo! One item to note is the tide here can be significant and if you are from a non-tidal area, it is really cool. Their websites rules were completely different from what Linda was telling us and I 1000% would not recommend anyone waste their time or money on this place. 0/10 for us. Fires books and…read moreweddings The Cape Porpoise Library is a small community library located in the Cape Porpoise section of the town of Kennebunkport. A small, one room library, it is actually part of an old building called Atlantic Hall. Atlantic Hall was an old fire house built around 1914 but when the new fire station was completed across the street in 1959, Atlantic Hall became available for local and private events. Lots of parties, weddings, celebrates, concerts and even lobster bakes have been held in the hall. The library is small but definitely full of charm and history. Not a whole lot of books or materials but the larger and far more useful Kennebunkport town library is located only a short distance away. The library is just one room but has a lovely ambiance with old and new photos, comfy places to sit and lots of cute and interesting stuff kind of scattered about. Not a huge or stunning library but one that is definitely unique. This place is an anachronism, a library that reflects how things use to be. You can get a book, use a computer and even have a lobster bake, attend a party, or get married upstairs. Just the way people have done for a long time.

Book bridges and…read moregolf There are much larger, older, historic and certainly more aesthetically pleasing libraries than the Memorial Branch of the South Portland Library but I have certainly never seen one with a golf course before. The small library is reached by crossing over a cool little bridge into the upstairs of a building that the library shares with the pro shop of a municipal golf course. They also share the same little parking lot and you can get some nice views of the golf course from upstairs in the library. We saw people from both the pro shop and library oddly moving around together. For some reason this odd juxtaposition of rather dissimilar services seems to work quite well. Neither seems to be bothered by the presence of the other in the least. The library is a typical small branch library, convenient, well organized but small and a bit limited in the selection of materials. However it is nicely decorated and the librarians were very friendly. A strange but very cool little library where you not only get to find some books, do some research, use the wifi and just maybe get in a round of golf.
