They do have TSA Precheck here, so after I removed my mask to check ID, I headed up to the machine. I was able to keep my shoes on and my laptop in my bag. I also did not have to go through the DNA unzipper, just the magnetometer. No problems, no bag check. It was 60 seconds and I was through. This is how it should be all the time. But when I arrived to head through security - there was no one in the line in front of me. I'm guessing they don't really need one at this point given the overall volume of passenger traffic at this Airport. I jokingly asked the TSA agent where the TSA PreCheck line. He seriously answered the question - I then let him know I was just teasing him. He laughed and told me that "many folks have asked him that - and seriously wanted to know why there was not one." In any case, I proceeded through with a card that allowed me to keep my shoes on, but I still needed to take my notebook computer out of the computer bag. Breezed right on through! TSA folks at the smaller Airports are almost always so much nicer to interact with then their brethren at the larger Airports. While they are doing their jobs, at least they have a sense of humor!

Enormous ongoing summer noise ordinance issue for tenants of apartments near Congress and High St…read more We called Portland PD tonight and finally, at least once, the issue was resolved swiftly with no issues, no arrests, no problems at all. Thanks!

They appear to have falsely claimed to have issued me a snowplow-ordinance parking ticket --- "Oh,…read morewe did leave you a ticket, but someone must have taken it off again" --- but then they eventually sent me a thirty-day-unpaid-ticket notice in the mail; I suspect that they purposely "waited till the last minute" so that I would not have a chance to protest it before having to pay a late fee. (Plus I suspect that another reason that they didn't give me the ticket was that they didn't want me to know about it while I was still in the area and could thus have conveniently protested the ticket, and so they instead waited till I was all the way back home again to notify me; I live hundreds of miles from Portland, so I could not have been expected to drive all the way back there just to contest the ticket.) Plus it's not as if I had been the only one to naively park there prior to the late-night snowfall; there were many other cars parked in the same area along with mine, so many other motorists were also unaware of the parking ban; I suspect that the cops had illegally targeted my car merely because it was old and dilapidated-looking, falsely noting in their logbook that they'd issued me a ticket, but in truth merely observing my car but never issuing me a ticket. And when I protested that there were no signs prohibiting parking there, they said, "Well, we announced it on television". I didn't even HAVE a television in my hotel room, so I would have had no way of knowing; in effect, they were fining me for not watching television! They also falsely claimed that I had "used up my grace-notices" --- i.e., to encourage tourism, they are supposed to have a policy of giving you one or two "warning" notices before issuing you an actual ticket --- when in reality that was the first time in my life that I had parked in Portland.

From what I remember, he helped oversee the shipments of pine trees from Maine to England. This impressive pre-Revolutionary home sits on a knoll overlooking the banks of the Fore River and boasts of a beautifully manicured yard (I would absolutely love to have a garden party here... something with fancy hats and bubbly, y'know?). I love everything about this museum, really I do...I think it has captured a frozen moment in Portland's timeline. I just think they need some new folks working here who are passionate about the right things. What I mean is, docents really can make or break an experience; when they're engaging and enthusiastic about the information they're sharing, it's infectious. When they're genuinely excited to breathe life into history, they make generations to come also excited. Unfortunately, from what I've experienced, the docents here (and the people inside the Gift Shop) are the complete opposite of that. Here's just one example (and there are many to choose from): I was once standing in the museum in a way in which a particular docent didn't like. So much so, she stopped the tour to make my friends and I reposition ourselves (multiple times) until she was happy, but then yelled at us because our arms were taking up too much space... not kidding. My suggestion is, if you can, come here during one of their events - there's a lot of different people working a lot of different areas, so one bad egg won't ruin your experience. For me, their Colonial Christmas event is absolutely spectacular (especially if there's a light dusting of snow on the ground). They really do capture the essence of the colonial times perfectly from the decorations to the period costumes to the music to the interactive games and to the delicious spread of treats in the Means House available afterwards!

Put the kids in the car, take them here, and teach them about good old fashioned 'Murkan history.
