What a great experience! Just got my first haircut in over a year. I had taken to shaving my head during the pandemic but in November I started to let my hair grow out. Bill does an ok job. I have tried a few other barbers in the area and their cuts not very neat or consistent. The past two visits i received a buzz cut and it's not what I wanted. The shop is comfortable and has a great atmosphere. It is a bit dusty in there but otherwise clean. There is coffee, tea and even cold drinks available. There is a good offering of hair products in the store. Prices are reasonable for cuts and products. If you arrive early or on time you can expect to wait 20 minutes or more but if your a few minutes late you lose your appointment. I found I'm not really saving money going to a barber for 19.00 uneven buzz cut. I went to Jupiter Salon and spent 25.00 for a really nice haircut. read more

One can only go to a place and listen to the owner barade on about the "fat lesbians next door" for so long. This happened the first time I went there. I'm a little ashamed that I went there a second time because it was the first decent haircut I had gotten in Humboldt County, after trying a few other places beforehand that were horrible. By far my favorite hair-cuttery. Comparing Bill Hancock to other local barbers is like comparing Chopin on a Steinway to Chopsticks on a Schoenhut. He is skilled at his trade and has a very developed sense of style. He also makes for an excellent conversationalist, having the spark and curiosity of an intelligent and informed person. The shop itself emanates a masculine mien, all wood and leather with shelved literature ranging in brawny topics, from naval officer manuals to current copies of the Wall Street Journal and Times-Standard. Went to this place because my father-in-law told me if I wanted an incredible "Man Experience" I should go. One day I decided to pamper myself with an old fashioned straight razor(and probably a dozen hot steamed towels along with cocoa butter and other fabulous facial treatments) shave and hair cut. This guy was professional and the place looked like you were walking back in time to the mid to late 1800's with the decor and style. I was there for the good part of an hour and a half but there was probably at least a half hour worth of conversation after the work was done because I felt like I made a friend in life with the barber. I started searching for a barber to meet my needs in 2002. I searched from Mckinleyville to Eureka and Arcata in between. I found this gem of a barber shop in 2005. Right after opening the door I was immediately taken to a better time and place. I wished that the hair cut would be half as good as the ambiance. I was rewarded with a hot towel scalp massage, haircut, and warm shave that was twice as nice as the setting. That was 5 years ago...I still try to make it once a week for a clean up and every other week for a cut. I meet great people who know class and I am provided with a wide array of high quality men's grooming products at reasonable prices. All in all, a great hair cut, amazing service, an overall enjoyable experience...and all on a county workers salary. Best place for a man to get a hair cut in the county. read more

He has a variety of styles you can choose from, and it is a friendly, welcoming environment. This was my first visit with Bill, and I know that I will be going back. Rather than selling me hair care products, he gave me some tips on hair maintenance and hygenic shaving. Good idea with poor execution. The online appointment maker is cumbersome and glitchy. Website says appointments for Saturday but when I walked in on a Wednesday I was told by Bill himself, after he let me stand around for a while, that he is booked weeks in advance. His man centric decor was more like your dead uncles basement. If you like a cluttered disorganized mess as a shop, a rude barber with a giant ego, and a waiting list weeks out, then this is the place for you. My advice, make an appointment somewhere else...just saying...its not as advertised. read more

Best men's haircut experience in the entire country.

I recently moved to Eureka from San Diego and wasn't sure whether I'd find a quality barber in the area... until I visited Bill at City Barber. Beyond the well-balanced and reasonably priced gentleman's cut I received, I was most impressed with Bill's appreciation for the tradition of the American men's barber shop, as well as his attention to detail. I had never taken much interest in hair before, but his passion and expertise actually inspired a certain appreciation in me for this art.
