David Pryor is fabulous. He is good with curly/wavy hair. It is so difficult to find a hair stylist who can deal with wavy hair. He listens when you tell him what you need. He is kind and chill. I never write reviews unless the service is exceptionally good or terrible... in this case it was terrible. I came in to ask for a haircut, a 1 on the sides and a trim on top (my hair length on top is a little over an inch). She starts off with the 1 and cuts it way too high up the sides to point where I knew blending it into the top of my hair would've been extremely difficult. But I figured whatever, she probably knows what she's doing. She begins to trim my hair on top and there is no way she can blend in my hair on top because of how high my sides were. It looked like a bowl cut. She made no attempt to ask me how short I wanted the trim, but I figured she'd just blend it the best she could. She then asked me how I usually do my hair, I said I comb it to the side. You'd think that she'd figure, ok I'll leave it long enough so he can do that, right? NOPE. Cuts way too much in the front. She then asks me if I want it shorter in the back while holding the back of my hair. I told her yes because it was still my original hair length in the back. SHE PROCEEDS TO CUT ALL OF THE TOP OF MY HAIR EVEN SHORTER. She then has the audacity to tell me I should just shaved it with a size 3 or a 4 if I wanted it this short. Really?? I said I wanted to comb it to the side after. Definitely can't do that anymore. Told her it was too short and She told me she asked if I wanted the front of my hair any shorter. Not true one bit. Definitely not a miscommunication given I told her I wanted a trim on top and long enough to comb over to the side. I look like the meme where it says "just f my sh*t up" about a guy with a terrible haircut on a billboard. Now I have to pay to get this wildly uneven haircut fixed. She told me because it was too short she would just charge 20$... that's literally the same price for a haircut anywhere else. She also had the audacity to tell me to come back in a week if it's still not short enough. Jesus Christ. For anyone wondering, it was the older lady with grey hair and glasses. I don't know about hair styling here. So my review and rating is for eyebrows. David does my eyebrows here and they always turn out really nice. I have gone to several other places and the tint never lasts as long as when I have it done by him. So if you are looking for a good place to get your brows done, I'd say go here for sure! I've been to a lot of places in Humboldt to get my hair cut and I have found I like a stylist compare to barber. For the price, the quality makes the difference to me. I see David for a men's haircut which runs about $35 ($25 base, $10 tip). David is a master of his craft! He's been cutting hair since he was a kid and professionally for several years. I've had several friends go to him over the years and we all love him! I usually get a pho hawk, but since David keeps on changing men's hair styles, he's modified it to be more modern and less 2010 Vegas douche. All the stylist here are sought after and have a large customer base, so call and make an appointment. They never take walk-ins and usually require 1-5 days notice to make an appointment. In terms of hair, I have straight short hair, my old roommate had a 24inch curly fro that he got trimmed and eventually cut to a short length, and my third friend was a female who want to go from long hair to a fo hawk. Parking is a little crazy on the street, so I suggest walking here or parking down the way by Subway. read more

I've been a dedicated Hair Unlimited client since 2012. From the moment I walked through the door, I felt very welcome. Usually the first thing I look at are the vibes of the salon and the employee community. This salon is small with people who've worked together for a while and are always engaging in down to earth conversations with you. Then, I look at the quality of hair styling. They have a satisfaction guarantee which I've never had to bring up because my stylist (Jayne) does an amazing job! Living in Arcata, it's hard for someone with my hair texture (coarse and curly) to find a good hair stylist willing to work with it and provide a great outcome. When I leave this salon each time, though, I am always satisfied. I also know the other stylists do great jobs, as well. The other stylist I've seen the most next to Jayne is David. I've seen amazing lines done in his clipper cuts...elaborate designs I can't even dream of doing and I've been a dog groomer for years now! They are also always updating their hair product stock, introducing new products that they believe is the best for a variety of hair types. All in all, I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone. Hair Unlimited, aka "The Butcher Shop" of G Street. This place sucks ass!!!! Without a doubt, the absolute worst haircut of my entire life, and I'm in my mid 40's. Pathetically bad. It's not just a bad haircut, they royally fucked my hair up so badly that I need to go to a real professional stylist and pay to have this mess corrected. I actually had to go back twice to have them try to fix the horrible job had done originally, and after three attempts, they still couldn't do it right. This was just a simple, basic men's haircut. Nothing fancy, nothing in depth. David attempted to give me a full haircut with a razor, which was ridiculously stupid. Then, I went back again and had a woman, I think her name was Kathy. She attempted to cut my hair, and was equally unqualified. Her scissors were dull, and old. At one point, she dropped her scissors on the floor, and they broke into two pieces. Time for a new pair?? I think so. Then, I went back again to have it fixed again, and this time the owner Jane cut my hair. She did an unbelievably bad job. This woman is a talentless turd that called the police when I called to complain about the haircut, and cried to them that I was harassing her. The absolute height of being unprofessional, and irresponsible. Hair Unlimited is a blight on our community, and I truly hope to see their doors closed forever from lack of business. I have to say, in all honesty, I've really never had a worse haircut in my entire life. We're talking completely uneven, and cut completely wrong. Especially in regards to what I requested, but just in general, an unbelievably poor job. Basically, they gave me a really bad reverse pompadore thing or something. I have no idea what these idiots did. Some kind of crazy style that feels like a mop on my head, and backwards!! I insisted on a full refund, which they did give me, but I STRONGLY RECOMMEND finding a different salon. These people are just not professional, in my opinion. You can do a better job yourself. Just blindfold your eyes, and hack away. Couldn't be much worse. Proceed with caution. Good luck!!! Hopefully they'll go out of business soon. read more

I've found Hair Unlimited to be the best place in Arcata to get a $15 haircut (before tip). My haircut is pretty simple: shave and blend with two different size clippers Obviously, more complicated haircuts will cost more. I refuse to go to other places that want to charge me $20-$30 for my style of haircut. There are two other places in downtown that also give cuts for $15 (both on H street), but I only received inconsistent and mediocre haircuts at both locations. This is my new go to place for a good haircut. Jane and David are both really friendly, great stylists. I especially like the attention to detail that Jane takes to cut my hair just right. She's a perfectionist, which I think is a good trait in someone who is cutting my hair. Since I've only been there a few times, Jane always asks questions to understand exactly how to cut my hair. I can honestly say that I've never had another stylist who cared enough to ask how I like my hair blended or cleaned up on the sides and back. Other stylists normally assume they know what I want and go about with the haircut. Today, Jane also washed my hair at the end so that I wouldn't have thousands of needle-like hairs poking me for the rest of the day. I can't say if the wash is standard or not because it was the first time I actually made an appointment. The first two times I went in, I happened to walk in during times when David and Jane didn't have appointments (this is probably rare). It's best to make an appointment here. read more

This place is great! It's clean and everyone is friendly. I get my hair dyed here whenever I need to get it done. Stacy is amazing with color. I personally get my hair dyed some sort of red and she is really great with working with you. Red is a difficult color and easy to mess up (I've had mess ups in the past but not at this salon). Its easy to make an appointment, although you may have to wait a week, its worth it. read more
