When we arrived late, someone physically grabbed my husband to stop him from finding a seat because the choir was singing. This is not a safe or welcoming place for LGBTQ+ individuals. We came to hear the word of God, but instead experienced intolerance and fear-based messaging. Christ taught love, compassion, and justice for the marginalized--not control or condemnation. We did not feel God's presence here, only a narrow interpretation of scripture. A church that only focuses on selective parts of the Bible is not teaching the whole Gospel. This did not feel like a place of grace, love, or true biblical teaching. This is my personal experience.

I have been feeling like the enemy or the devil has been attacking me. And I've morning a lost from a relationship, my cars engine broke down on me, listening to family drama and I'm just like what did I do to deserve this. I am blessed enough to have friends to come and get me to take me to church, and I even walked back home after. Took me 3 and half hours to walk but I needed that. There was plenty of parking in the garage, come early especially since this Saturday they had this performance of the passion play. Great singing and performance by everyone. We took communion. I'm torn by the way I feel. I feel like there is an angel and a demon on my shoulders that tugging on my heart, mind and spirit. I want to do right. So god has it on my heart to lean on him while I am feeling so low. Not going to lie I miss my daughter so much.

St. Elizabeth used to be my church while growing up in Van Nuys...! My sister got married there!…read moreand the rules were not as bad as they are now... for photographers/videographers that is! It used to be that we were allowed to move from one side to the other, walking BEHIND the church goers of course... but that changed a few years ago! we were to stay on one side of the altar, and shoot our images/video from there... which gave us a good angle! and we usually were able place a camera on the other side, out of the way, so we could capture the Bible readings... but now! we can't even do that!!! We are forced to stay on the handicaped ramp to the right side of the altar, and were told to "not move from there" until it is time to go to the other side for the offering of flowers to the Virgin Mary... which is hidden away in the very far part of the altar... which you can NOT get to, unless you get to walk there BEFORE the flower time! and to make matters worse... because of the Pope's passing, they had a shrine built to the right of our location, so we could not get a shot of the altar!!! I was told that I could NOT place a camera in the far side of sanctuary, because "those were the rules", so I asked "who makes the rules?" and Miguel said that each church has its own rules... I asked why not let me place a camera out of the way? it wasn't on anybody's way! again... "those are the rules"... So I asked him.. "why do they allow so many cameras during mass at the Vatican? they must have a hundred cameras! he said that they were "unmanned"... so I said I could do that! I can put up to 5 unmanned cameras! He said "No, you can not! those are the rules!" The church lady...(I didn't catch her name) told me I could come back to the altar for a few pictures after the service... but when I brought the girl back, she screamed at me that no more pictures were allowed! that they had another quinceañera coming in! I said "I was told I could get a few" she yelled "who told you that?" I said "YOU DID!" and then she said okay! only one! I did a test shot, she said "that is enough!" REALLY?! it was a test shot! I took 3 pictures of the same pose and walked out! Hoping I will never have to come back to this church!!! and I will tell everyone of my clients to change their mind about having their event there... it seems like they are in the "business" of faith... because the service is NOT free... like the Pope said, but they get around that with the technicality of calling it an "offering"... which should be called a "bribe" if we're being honest. I have been doing professional photography and video for over 3 decades! and I have often asked my clients, if they knew their house was going to flood in a few minutes, what items would they rescue from it? the answer is almost always their pictures and videos... but not the clients from St. Elizabeth! since they don't have any of those! because "those are the rules".

This review is strictly for the church not the school! Love: that they have lots of mass schedules scattered throughout the weekend. Makes it more convenient to catch a mass when you have a busy schedule. The priests are friendly and give good homilies. Love the old school layout of the church. Love that there's plenty of seating so you don't usually have to worry unless it's a major holy day of obligation. Dislike: the parking situation. There's a small parking lot on the school grounds which fills up quickly. Frequently you're having to park on the busy side street, Roscoe. That's always iffy since there's a lot of traffic and crazy people trying to break into your car. Dislike that they have so many announcements at the end of the mass. Sometimes it's another 10 minutes worth of announcements, crazy. If you're really lucky you might even catch their high school performing a "preview" of whatever upcoming play they are selling tickets for. I always thought that's awkward to piggyback that kind of stuff to a mass. It feels like you're taking away the concentration of the importance of the mass, but that's just me.

As a whole, this is a community of God-loving, Spirit-filled followers of Jesus who care for one another and welcome visitors with open hearts and minds and a genuine enthusiasm for those seeking connection with God and the church. Over the years I have seen a consistent truth that has impacted and influenced my own walk with God through its many seasons: Jesus must be at the center because however sincere the intentions may be, a close-knit family of believers is not without its flaws. I've been hurt by people, but no more than my own weaknesses and faults may have hurt others at times. I've been let down by imperfect people, and I have found myself being unable to meet every need expected of me by others as well. I think that is part of how we grow. We learn in a community of people who need grace. We learn not only how to give that grace freely, but also how much we need a lot of grace ourselves. The consistent mindset I've encountered has been to strive toward resolution and make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Individuals are encouraged to engage but are free to choose their own level of involvement. I've learned to keep in mind that every one of us is fighting a hard battle at any given time, and not to take perceived slights personally without the willingness to communicate openly about how I'm feeling. I've learned to forgive. Sometimes it's hard. But... Sometimes being willing to admit when I need forgiveness is even harder. So as with any family, grace and mutual respect are important, and processing challenging experiences in healthy, mature ways is one of the many valuable things that the people of Turning Point have helped me to develop. God's purpose and plan is to build us all together to become a Holy Temple in the Lord. The Bible is filled with flawed families figuring it out! Reaching spiritual maturity is a different process than reaching those seeking a new relationship with God. I've found both of those experiences and everything in between to be more than capably navigated within this little church family. I was brand new once too. People stepped up to help me learn from the Bible. I've seen the men and women of Turning Point lay down their lives to help enrich the lives of others and deepen their experiences of God throughout the diverse stages of literally hundreds of unique transformative journeys. I've been a single man, grateful to be able to build strong relationships with my spiritual sisters within this church family for over 15 years. So many memories and experiences have become foundational to my identity. I eventually met the woman who would become my beloved wife here after a few dating relationships that did not end up at the altar. Through the tumultuous and the tranquil times and seasons of my life, the Rock has and always will be Jesus. He has been my peace when there was only chaos. But the love and support of the church family has meant so much to me, I'm not sure where I'd be without those deep connections developed over the years in moments spent by doing life together with my brothers and sisters here at Turning Point. Depending on the people who comprise the church to meet every expectation we might unknowingly have is unfair and unhealthy. But there is deep love here. For God and the church and the world around us all. With many church homes to choose from, I've found my place alongside the people of Turning Point because we take the Bible seriously, we trust that Jesus is in control, we try to keep in step with the Holy Spirit, and we value the risky responsibility to care fiercely for each other and open our hearts and lives to help people who want to build a deeper relationship with God. Turning Point Church has been my church home for over half of my life now. While this body of believers has never been able to claim perfection, they've also never stopped striving to be closer to the church Jesus intended. The Holy Spirit lives within this body of believers, and God is working powerfully to move us all toward maturity in Christ and to hopefully be a light for the world we're reaching out to impact.
