But I went in this evening to look at some possibilities for a dress to wear to an upcoming wedding and was "fat-shamed" on 3 separate occasions by the sales associate within just 10 minutes time. And I'm a perfectly average - middle of the size scale - woman. For example, when holding up one dress from the rack (in the same size of another dress that the associate had just placed in a dressing room for me), the associate came around and said she only had it left in two sizes, but it might be "okay because it was wide and flowy" - implying that she didn't think my size would fit my body. [Side note: the dress fit perfectly]. I also tried on a dress with pockets that didn't lay flat on my body (but the top of the dress was gaping and too big) and still, the associate made a point to smugly tell me the dress was "too snug". Even if that were the case, she could have gently suggested that other clients have sewn down pockets to help them lay flat, rather than say the fit was too small for me (again, it wasn't). The sad thing is, I tried on another dress that was really cute and tried on a pair of shoes that I liked and wanted to purchase, but after this experience I couldn't fathom spending my money at the store.

What I wasn't expecting was a nice boutique with really cute sweaters along with some equally adorable tops and t-shirts and dresses. Although Wilderness also carries shoes and jewelry, that's not what drew my eye. The sweaters did that. There were sweaters of all kinds, the small knit, the chunky knit, and a few combination shawl/sweaters, some even with a hand-knit look. As would be expected with this time of year, the colors were subdued: earth-tones, greys, blues -- but all were beautiful. Also expected given the time of year, that sweaters of all kinds would dominate the stock. This is definitely the type of store to visit during all the seasons. The clothes are beautiful, the staff among the most friendly and helpful I've ever had the pleasure to speak with. The one thing that matched my expectations: pricing. Wilderness House is not inexpensive. Although there were tempting, moderately priced items, Wilderness House is, unfortunately, a special occasion-only or on-sale store for me.

The clothing here seems to be primarily tunics, blouses, t-shirts, camisoles, and dresses, mostly unstructured styles. Perhaps it's the time of year because who wants heavy clothing for summer temps? Things are spaced around the store so there's no crowding and it's easier to browse. It's an open setup. The clothing racks are mostly along the wall, interspersed with some accessories, and some scented candles and soaps. There's jewelry as well, but not so much that it becomes distracting. There are large dressing rooms, with black and white curtains, and black and white pillows and a bench to make it seem more welcoming. The staff are of the no-pressure kind, but will take a customer's selections into a dressing room, allowing that person to browse more easily. It's a psychological trick, I think, to keep them in the store longer.
