Second, our family had traveled all the way to Manhattan to adopt a Bichon...only to find out she had passed away before we arrived. I told myself I would NEVER buy a dog. Adopt don't shop. Right? Well not when you drive home from Manhattan with crying 2.5 year old twins. Tinsy went to heaven? Chloe too? Why mommy? So, I called the puppy store near my house; Petite Pets. A lovely woman named Beth encouraged me to come in, "We have the perfect dog for you...he's a little older...his name is Griffin". I wisely came in without my children because I didn't want them to be let down again. However, I fell in love at first sight with this little guy. His sad eyes, his long curly hair, the fact that he was a "leftover". I promptly called my husband and had him bring my girls over to meet him. Beth was right, Griffin was the perfect dog for us. At the time, $1150 was more money than we could afford and frankly against my morals and beliefs but we were IN LOVE. Beth explained that Griffin had been heavily discounted because he was "older" at 7 months old. Now here's when I regretted my decision: this past weekend, after owning Griffin for only 5 weeks...he started to limp, and not bear any weight on one leg. Concerned, my husband brought him right in to Dr. Alison Rhein of Dix Hill Animal Hospital. Incidentally, Dr Ali is also the owner of Petite Pets. At that time she diagnosed our poor Griffin with Legge Perthes, a hereditary disease that needs to be surgically corrected. The xrays cost 350$ and the surgery will cost $2500. Wow! We thought, "I'm sure Dr. Ali and Petite Pets will DO THE RIGHT THING." Wrong. Very wrong. Petite Pets has offered to offset the cost by 1150$(the original cost of our Griffin). This means, our grieving family will be out $1700. This $1700 is probably NOTHING for the owner of two businesses in Huntington BUT for our young family it will be the difference between being able to afford pre-school, a family vacation or even Christmas presents. We know our sweet fur baby needs the surgery and therefore we will pay.

Our puppy is a completely different dog. Don't get me wrong you have to put the work in too but that's anywhere you go. They really give you the tools and make sure you know what you are doing before you leave. Honestly best decision we have made! Worth every penny. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I was turned off with the initial lack of communication.

It's not some money-making scam! Believe me, the team at Ollie's Angels pours their lives into animal rescue and gets nothing in return other than love and good vibes! There are one or two other negative reviews from applicants who weren't accepted for the dog they wanted because they didn't have the right home set up or family situation for that animal. Again, this is a strength of Ollie's, not a flaw! Some dogs are appropriate for apartments and some dogs aren't. Some are good for families, and some are better for single owners. It's a good thing that the team at Ollie's Angels works so hard to get their placements right. And 9 times out of 10, they do. I received a response from Heidi Walker, who is extremely negative and should not be running a dog rescue. We went back and forth a handful of times. It ultimately ended up being the worst interactions I have ever interacted with a rescue. She is not caring and she should not have interactions with potential adopters and fosters. My veterinarian advised that spaying her this young was not safe and strongly recommended waiting until she was older. When I brought these concerns to the rescue, I was met with rude, dismissive, and intimidating responses. Rather than having a respectful discussion about my veterinarian's recommendations, I was repeatedly told I would be in breach of contract and would never have licensure of my puppy if I did not follow their timeline. The emails I received were hostile and unprofessional, especially considering I was simply trying to advocate for my puppy's health. I understand rescues have policies, but there should be room for reasonable consideration when a licensed veterinarian raises concerns. The way I was treated left me feeling disrespected and unsupported. I have adopted many puppies and animals from other rescues in the past and have never had an experience remotely close to this. I would encourage anyone considering adopting from this rescue to carefully review their requirements and be aware of how medical concerns and adoption procedures may be handled.

Saving animals is not easy for those who volunteer but is worth every minute when they can connect a needy pup with their forever home. Earlier this year we wanted to help out and adopt a pup that needed a home. So we filled out the RHR application and then went through an extensive phone and home video interview and inspection. Everyone involved in the vetting process was very professional. We were impressed at how detailed they were to make sure that if we were approved our home would be safe and welcoming to one of their charges. If every rescue did what RHR does there is no doubt in our minds that every dog placed would end up in great forever homes. Originally, we were interested in a dachshund/poodle mix but had to pass on her because we were not feeling well to bring her home. A few weeks later we went to a RHR foster home to meet a few potential pups. Our original intention was to adopt a similar pup to the one we had to pass on and decided to trial foster a totally different pup who is a chihuahua/rat terrier mix from Korea who was very shy and not very interested in us. From the moment we adopted Ozzy we kept in contact with RHR via multiple texts, photos and videos to keep everyone in the loop as he slowly came out of his shell. It took a few weeks for Ozzy to want to fully explore our home and fenced in yard. Then a few more weeks until he found his voice and proved to us, yes he can bark, especially when we were, in his mind, taking a bit too long to cook his eggs for breakfast. Now a few months later he is part of the family, enjoying playing with his brothers and sisters, keeping up with them and showing that he is truly one of the gang. So if you want to help a pup in need and support the gallant efforts of the RHR organization we would highly recommend that you do so. As a former board member of an Animal Rescue in Massachusetts I can say that this organization truly deserves the support of any animal lover who wants to make a difference by adopting one of their wonderful pups.
