The previous 24 hours had not been a celebration of lodging or dining so by the time I hiked into town via the Thames River Path I was looking to treat myself. A simple pub wasn't the answer and until I saw it, I didn't know that Gilbey's was just what I needed. With several large parties going on in other parts of the restaurant it was easy, from my sunny window seat, to see why people would host parties here. Everything about the place felt upscale and special. I splurged on a Flat Iron Steak (good) and sampled Gilbey's rendition of Fish & Chips (excellent). The food was tasty and beautifully presented but it was really the whole of the place that made it sing for me. It even annoyed me when someone wandered out from their party and set an empty cocktail glass beside an attractive floral arrangement before departing. I wanted Gilbey's to be as pristine as it was before she did that and pointed it out to our server for removal. Gilbey's is a great place to splurge a bit in an environment that practically demands a cocktail and a couple of hours. When I told my server how much I enjoyed it here she inquired where in town I was staying. "Next time stay here" she winked. Gilbey's has a small number of absolutely lovely rooms to lodge in. If you find yourself in Eton you might as well splurge. Lunch, dinner, or drinks at Gilbey's and perhaps a room above will nicely meet that requirement.

The best in all of London. Elegantly presented and well priced. Their mushroom risotto was also to die for. Desserts are also quite sinful but do indulge. Please try the Eaton mess, a strawberry dessert created by the boys from Eaton College. A must try dessert. You can't go wrong with whatever you try. The restaurant is walking distance from Windsor Castle. A must place to dine if in the area. Make reservations. They are quite busy and well worth the visit.

Absolutely delicious!…read more The food here is excellent, and the menu has a lot of options to choose from. We came early in the morning, and there were only a couple of other diners eating when we walked in. We were promptly seated and our drink order was taken. There was only one server, and he didn't come back with my coffee, or take our food order for ages. I admit, I was very frustrated with the long wait, and mumbled under my breath about how long it took to make a coffee. Unbeknownst to me, the server was right behind me and heard my remark... needless to say, service was prompt and efficient after that! I ordered the Plant Plate and was absolutely blown away at the huge portions, also how delicious everything was. I'm American, and my spouse is British, so I always thought it was strange to watch him eat baked beans for breakfast over the years... but surprisingly, it's pretty good and I'd definitely have it again. My spouse had the Pancake Stack with fresh fruit and really enjoyed his as well. The dining room is bright, airy, comfortable, and clean. The toilets are clean as well. Overall, the food was excellent, reasonably priced, and a great value for the huge portions and fresh, delicious food you get to enjoy. Highly Recommended!

I have never been treated so rudely in my life. The place was nearly empty when I went for dinner. Despite that a young male server looked around the empty room, looked at me and then sat me in a hidden corner at a tiny table that was clearly not meant to be for customers. After about half an hour I eventually got up and asked a bartender if I could put an order in. She was confused because she had no idea I was there. She confronted the jerk that put me at that table for not telling her that he sat a customer, and for purposely putting me at a bad table for no reason. He started laughing and gloating that he could get away with what ever he wanted and that he didn't care about her feelings or his job at all before he walked away. She felt bad but still didn't do anything to improve the situation. I wonder if he is related to the owner because he clearly didn't want to work, or even be a good person. After all of this happened the service was still practically non existent and I still payed the full tab even though I was treated horribly. I will never go back here. Ambience: The pictures online look great but the reality looks run down and on the verge of a mold outbreak.
