It's just darn good fruit cake that's been around for a long time! From Claxton, GA, the Fruite Cake Capital of the World!

While doing a road trip to Atlanta from Savannah, my husband found on Roadside America that Claxton, Georgia is home to the famous fruitcake company, Claxton's Fruit Cake. I do like fruitcake, however it really depends on what is in it. Some fruit cakes that I have had has too many candied fruits, which is something I don't really like and find to be too sweet. I like a fruitcake that is well balanced and also has chopped nuts for added texture and nuttiness. Anyways, in 1910, an Italian immigrant who also had a background in baking/ pastry making, Savino Tos, opened a bakery in Claxton. Although he had made other baked goods, he was best known for his fruitcake that is made with raisins, Georgia pecans, candied pineapple, dried fruit and other nuts. You can actually purchase this fruitcake from Amazon, Sam's Club, Walmart, etc. nationwide. But it is cheaper if you buy it from the storefront directly. When we arrived on a Tuesday morning, around 11 am, we were able to find street parking right out front. We came in and were acknowledged but were not greeted by the employees behind the plexiglass. Based on the few photos on this Yelp page inside, it was definitely different looking (I am assuming because of the pandemic). There were few offerings of fruitcake, which included individually wrapped thin slices of fruitcake, 1 lb rectangular wrapped fruitcake, 3 lb wrapped fruitcake and 5 lb wrapped fruit cake. Not sure if I would like this fruitcake, I ended up purchasing: Fruit Cake Bar, $1 prior to tax- I purchased 2 of these fruitcake bars, which were individually wrapped. Being that it was only $1 (before tax), I figured it was a good deal just to try it. I consumed this the day after purchase and felt it was on the sweet side because of all the candied fruit that was in it. I did not feel the flavors were balanced, as I felt part of it was bland and the other was so sweet. I am glad that I only ended up purchasing 2 of these thin bars instead of a 1 or 3 pound cake (which is what I was afraid would happen if I did not end up liking it). ------------------------------- (Total= $2.08 after tax) Service was a little weird and made me feel a bit awkward when we came in. There were employees and their children sitting behind the plexiglass. It looked like the children and the adults were eating their lunch or breakfast. Since we were the only customers, I think it just added to the awkwardness. All the food items on display on the counter were not price tagged so I had to ask how much the fruitcake bars were. Overall, not really interested in coming back here or to try this fruitcake brand again. But I am sure there are others that would disagree and be delighted with the way this company's fruitcake taste like. read more

Our route home was going to take us right through Claxton so I knew I had to stop at the Claxton Fruit Cake factory. I love fruit cake and Claxton is one of the best. I parked out front and walked into what was a small retail area. They had most of the varieties and sizes available, but in small quantities since it is now the off season. I picked up a nice 2 lb. box. I had a nice conversation with the gentleman behind the counter. Found out he and I graduated from High School in the same year. Said he'd been working there for 60 years.They've been in business since 1910 and have some cool historic photos hanging on the wall. He invited me to come back in the fall when the factory would be running and he would give me a tour. read more

An unknown friend sent this so I was very happy to get it and couldn't wait to taste it. I have great memories of fruitcake. Well, the first slice was so bad I was shocked. Okay, wait a minute, cut another piece and give it another chance. But no change. It was absolutely terrible and I am no gourmet who is hard to please. In the compost it goes. read more

Claxton's is a fraud! They screwed up an order and they refuse to make it right! I paid for a 3lb. Fruitcake that should have been shipped to Pittsburgh PA. INSTEAD it was shipping to the sender. The emails invoice has the correct shipping address. Now I have to pay to ship the Late gift, again. I'm going to print the emails and spread them around town until my order is made right. And also repost this every week. One of the replies to my email was " You should have called customer service ". Before placing the order online, I called both of the numbers provided on the sales magazine for two days with no answer! Two days! I'm so tired of being ripped off by online ordering. It's a shame how Claxton's harrasses you with their advertising magazines and treat you like dirt on their mistake. read more

OK. Used to love this fruitcake, alas no more. I buy a 3 pound pack of fruitcake every year and we typically enjoy it from before Thanksgiving through Christmas. Opened the firts cake yesterday and could tell right away something wasn't. It is chock full of cheap, bitter, Citron (lemon / orange peel). Yuck. I am hoping this pack is just a bad batch. read more

The public store here is a little counter off to the side of what I'm guessing is a big building where they make fruitcake. This is the fruitcake with the mules on the label. I went here right before Christmas and apparently the foods are flying off the shelves. It's wrong of me, but I do not like fruitcake, and I came here looking for non fruitcake items. They do carry jams and some different flavors of candied pecans and super rich candy snacks like pecan logs, but with the holidays that nonfruitcake section was picked over and even the selection of fruitcake was a little limited, so they told, although it had a bunch of kinds of fruitcake and how many fruitcakes can a person eat? They had a bunch of different fruitcakes like with more molasses so it's darker, or more corn syrup so it's lighter, and maybe 8 kinds of fruitcake, but they told me that they usually have more. They were out of fruitcake cubes dipped in chocolate and stuff like that because everyone goes crazy buying fruitcake for Christmas. Anyway, I got some jam here, and now I've been to the fruitcake factory store. read more

I too grew up hating fruit cakes. They tasted like plastic fruit pieces! Barf! Then as an adult, someone gave me a Claxton Fruit Cake and I fell in love! Each Year I look for them in Walmart and usually buy several. Geez I think I am over-due, excuse me I need to get to Walmart! read more

This place is cute and quaint. The building is huge and long but the shop is nice and small. Great tasting Fruit Cake and they have 2 kinds...dark and regular. Easy to find. read more

Wow...this stuff is amazing. Forget all of the jokes about fruitcake lasting for years and being re-gifted. If you are like me, this stuff will be devoured and you will be looking for more. And, superfast 3 day delivery. I made a mistake by not paying attention to a shipping date, and now I risk eating (and giving it away) before the Christmas season (although, with everything going on this year, early gifts might be a good idea). I bought the 10 1lb package of 5 light and 5 dark (w/free delivery). The first one of the 10 we ate was the dark variety--darker and sweeter. read more

Y'all, I grew up hating fruitcake - the stuff my mom made and called fruitcake, that is. Claxton Fruitcake was a welcome surprise last year, when I finally threw caution to the wind and gave it a try. I just saw it on the grocer's shelf again this morning and look forward to seeing how much room I can make for it in our freezer compartment. It's moist, delicious, and that goes for the beautiful fruit, also - each little slice looks like it has jewels in it!
