While advertising has all the money in the world to spend (at least so I've heard), television and digital video production can't say the same for themselves. With TV, and now I am learning that with digital content as well, the cheaper, the better. I know, #producerproblems. Back when I was still working for a local cable channel, I had the challenge of producing high quality promos with a very limited budget. It was quite a mean feat but I was able to pull it off with the help of a few friends. They pointed me to Cinerent, a production rental house that's got the works - camera and lenses rental, camera grips, light equipment and audio rental. Just like every other production rental house, Cinerent has a complete list of whatever you'll need in a shoot. All their equipment has a corresponding caretaker to make sure that the shoot runs well and without any hitch, at least from their part. Their day rate is equivalent to a 16-hour shoot, starting from the time you set-up and ending when someone shouts, "that's a wrap!" Cinerent guys (the grips, the people you scheduled your reservations to, etc) are all very nice as well. In a highly stressful shoot day, all the smiling faces and energetic personalities are what will help make the process more fun! It's one of the main reasons I like Cinerent - I've never had problem with any of their people in any of the shoots I've done with them. Thank God for these guys and I've managed to pull off some of the most difficult shoots I've had.

A helpful staff is on-call to assist in moving around the heavy gear and to answer any sort of question when it comes to lighting techniques. As I mentioned earlier, the space has two studios - one studio is smaller, perfect for portraiture and editorial shoots. Another much bigger studio, complete with cyclorama and huge windows to let natural light in is also available for rent. It's got ample space for bigger productions like video and commercial shoots.

They made my former office's company planner, which came out really really nice. They were so easy to work with! Mariel handled the project and worked with us for several weeks as we made our own design. She merely advised how we could go about it, and which materials we could use. They had their own graphic designers who could do it for us, but since we had our own concept and our own designer, Primex just did the actual production of the pieces. I only had to provide a page plan and the final prints & layouts, and they were able to work with it to our exact specifications. They were very patient and receptive to comments during our back and forth, from type of paper, (I needed FSC quality paper and they had 'em!) type of cut, texture and finish of the cover, and the colors and hues of the final copy. Mariel was very patient and diligent with going through everything and going back and forth to our office to present samples, give other suggestions, and answer our questions. Mostly, she was very fair with the pricing and even advised on how we could save more and be more efficient with our design. It wasn't just about making money off of the project. They can do your logos, letterheads, IDs, whatever the hell you need to look even more pro in the business world. I haven't exactly tried (or thought about purchasing) those packages though. They can cost a lot for a starting business owner after all. But I did try printing my own digital paintings there. Sometimes, there are problems with the printer calibration, but they do allow printing a sample first so you can request adjustments. It was satisfying nonetheless, and printing my digital paintings here had gotten pretty addicting. I now send them as postcards during the hoidays to friends all over the world, hah!

Cheap rates and nearness still draw in lots of student bands looking for a rehearsal or recording studio. It has two fully equipped jam rooms. If you're lucky, they sometimes have available a guitar for lending to musicians who for some reason left their instruments at home or got robbed, etc. The greatest thing about this is that after a long, exhausting, but productive jam, bands can go straight to drinking downstairs, which is the new Tomato Kick. Band productivity and then band conversation and love make for an exciting combo. Yay to music and friendship!
