Very quiet most of the time, the librarians are really kind and helpful, and it is very organized. I recommend this library.

What a great community library in Clayton. The library was clean and organized, and it seemed to be well stocked with books and movies that people could borrow. I also liked the fact that they offered a lot of chairs and tables for people to sit at, whether they'd want to read books, whip out their laptops to work or do homework. They also have a "teen" or "young adult" section where you would find a great selection of manga/Japanese comic books. The library staff were very nice and helpful. I just created my library card the other day, and the staff was very patient and friendly. I would definitely go back to the library to borrow some books and movies. read more

Clayton Library is a marvelous resource for nearby residents. Although we live in Concord, we are on the eastern border and the Clayton Library is much easier to get to than the downtown Concord library, and is newer, better maintained and an overall nicer visit experience. Our family used the wonderful children's/young adult section extensively when our kids were young. This was a lifesaver, as young kids love a constant supply of fresh reading material to be read to, but they can go through several books and a sitting! We would regularly cart out a heavy stack of books, and return in a week or so for another stack. Without the library there's no way we could have afforded the same quality reading experience for our boys - it definitely helped them fall in love with books. However, with our kids grown, my visits to the library have dwindled as my reading evolved to e-books with my Kindle. But lately I have rediscovered library books again thanks to the Contra Costa Library System adopting Overdrive's mobile app for reading: Libby. With this app and a library card you can remotely at any time check out e-books and audiobooks with your phone. It's very easy to use: just search for a title or author, and if it's available you can immediately check out the book and send it to your Kindle. You can listen to audiobooks using the Libby app. The book will automatically return to the library at the end of three weeks; you can renew it if no one else is waiting for it. If the book is checked out, the app will give you an indication of how long the wait is. I recently checked a book out of the library at 10:45 PM on a Sunday evening. Very cool the library has become even more useful by adapting new technology. read more

Came here hoping for a quiet place to study unfortunately there were screaming kids which made it very difficult. I put on my AirPods but again the kids were very loud. Came back a few weeks later again to study (AirPods charged and ready). Unfortunately the art and wine festival was going on and that takes precedence. There was absolutely no place to park. I pulled out front and asked inside if there is some place I can park to use the library and was told no, these events only happen twice a year and to come back another day. read more

This is an excellent small town library! It doesn't have the pomp and circumstance that the Walnut Creek and Lafayette Libraries have, but it is a cozy and familiar space. The librarians are nice and friendly and the library itself is clean and well organized. It's quite easy to find what you need here and if you need help, there is always an employee available. It's also nice to sit and enjoy your book in such a quiet environment. Parking is available in the small lot in front or in the additional lot across the foot bridge. read more

I have used the Contra Costa County Library System in "spurts" over the years -- usually Concord, Clayton, Pleasant Hill, or one of the two Walnut Creek sites. When we first moved to Concord 40+ years ago, I was appalled at the Concord Library. It seemed to have limited offerings and it was difficult to find the new/best sellers. (In fairness, I was used to a large university library.) Later as a young mother, I found the Concord Library offered a very good story-time for preschoolers and a decent selection of children's books. But overall the Concord Library was a bit dirty and noisy. That's when I started going to Thurman Casey on Oak Grove or later to Clayton. I would like to support my hometown library of Concord, but most recently when I tried to donate some books for the Friends of the Library, I was treated quite rudely. Okay, I understand that they had reached capacity and could not accept more. However, a friend who volunteers for the Martinez Library told me they always take book donations. So ... Clayton has been my site of choice lately as it is just as close to my home as the Concord Library. The Clayton site is a good spot to cool off on hot days. But the wooden chairs can be very hard after an hour or so. Selections seem somewhat limited -- or at least they don't seem to have the books I am looking for. And most annoying of all the library can be noisy. Parents/ caregivers seem to make little effort to have their toddlers use their "inside voices"! read more

Friendly and versatile library with good book selection and children's programs. The Library Foundation holds very well organized large biannual used book sales generally in April and October. Small room with books for sale open year round during open hours. Downtown Clayton is easily accessible through a pedestrian tunnel under Clayton Rd. read more

The library is in the perfect location. Right across the street from downtown Clayton which has it's own charm, this location fits in. The area around the library is beautiful. Trees, a creek, even bridges surround it, so if you wanted to take a break from the quiet inside, you can enjoy the lovely sounds the outside offer. The parking is free, a very nice convenience. Inside the library it's very quiet (what one would want from a library), comfortable chairs, spacious tables, plenty of computers for those who wish to use them, and even though I have never spoken with an employee they all always smile at me whenever I'm coming or going. I love all the libraries in Contra Costa, but the Clayton location offers peace I just don't think the other locations can provide. read more

One of the things I looked forward to most about moving home was the library. I used to volunteer here when I was younger and I have a love for its quiet warmth. It is not heavily used and very clean. I can't speak for selection for others but for me I know that I could read my way through the stacks and be happy. If there is ever a title they don't have a quick request to the front desk and its searched for at other branches and shipped over free of charge. It is in an absolutely beautiful location located along the george cardinet trail and just really is a gem. I am almost glad that most of my generation appears to be moving towards being illiterate zombies more focused on reality TV than expanding their horizons because I will say i enjoy having this little haven to go to. There is plenty of space to work on a lap top (free wifi) and for those with kids they have a great summer reading program. read more

Like all the libraries in the CCC (Contra Costa Library District), the Internet is overwhelmingly slow. Whether you are at Danville, Clayton, Walnut Creek, Concord, Lafayette, Orinda, etc. the internet speeds are below national standard (below the 1.5 mbps downstream threshold). Whilst our brethren in SF and much of the South bay are experiencing some of the fastest internet connectivity in nation, we are experiencing excruciatingly slow speeds. It's a decent library besides the internet connectivity (that all of CCC needs to work on, please get a better ISP, invest in fibre). It's definitely not for College/Graduate students who may need to watch online video lectures, download important files for their classes or people who are just in general studying for exams (GRE, I.T. certs, etc. etc.) read more

Amazing what a community with money gets -- a clean, well kept, well lit library that doesn't smell like old socks! I love libraries in principle but this is a place I really wouldn't mind spending a couple hours in. read more

I feel so lucky to have such a great library less than 5 minutes from my house. This is a good sized library with quick and easy self check-outs if you prefer. If they don't have a book you want, you can request it be transferred to this library for pick up. As long as there is a Contra Costa library that has an available copy, you can usually get the book within a couple of days. They have a fantastic bi-annual book sale. For $10 you can become a member and receive entry to the book fair before it is open to the general public. In addition to their bi-annual book fairs, they have a room near the front of the library adjacent to the front desk where they sell books for $1. Parking is convenient, but they allow people to park in the lot when Clayton has events, such as the Wine Festival. On these days, you may be hard pressed to find a parking space. They are open on Sundays, closed on Fridays. They have special events/speakers and a book club. Love! read more

My hubby and I use this wonderful library at least once a week. We try to walk to it so we can enjoy the gorgeous scenery around it...the golf course, the George Cardinet trail, the creek with its many bridges and the comfortable benches and courtyard, mostly planted in California natives, except for the small but elegant rose garden. Best of all are the librarians who can order just about any resource you could want, even if it's from another county. There are relaxing views from almost every area inside the library from the many large windows that make this library such a light, bright and inviting place. We use the online "hold" service which can get us all kinds of old movies...the good ones! Check the hours before you go, as they are not "regular" hours. Closed on Friday. read more

One of my favorite Library's ever in a quaint historic town known as Clayton that I never even knew existed. Lots of paths and things to explore once you are done at the library and there is even a walking trail under the street to go explore the old-time town. The library has lots of tables and plugs so you should be able to find a quiet spot to work or relax. read more

The library is in a nice location near downtown Clayton. It has a quaint old library feel to it. There is a nice sized children's area for a small location. They have a self check machine located right next to the holds shelf, so it is easy to pop in and out when in a hurry. read more

My favorite library that is accessible for me.( if i lived closer to walnut creek or milpitas, those would probably be my favorites) I go to this one more often than the concord and ygnacio valley branches even though i live closer to those two. I can definitely see why people in concord would choose to go this one rather than the unsatisfying concord branch. The parking is never really an issue unless they are holding a crowded meeting at night in the community meeting room or they are holding festivals in the downtown( evidently the city owns the parking lot so the library has little say in protecting spaces for library users) I like the location and the setting, a nice walking trail is right next to the library that I use a lot. On the other side of the main road Clayton is the downtown. Its a nice little downtown that has a small town feel( if you're into that type of thing) and it is usually not that crowded. A completely different atmosphere than the concord downtown square. It is significantly less crowded( except when kids and school groups decide to take over the park) and instead of "crazies" and people sleeping on the grass the biggest concern the city has are the kids and teens hanging around there for too long. The library has a slot that is open all the time( Concord should take note), nice clean bathrooms that can be used by more than one person at a time( again, concord should take notice) and a nice little book sale area,. One negative is a lack of computers compared to other libraries( no computer lab). I do not know if the size or layout of the library plays a role but it never seems to get as noisy as some of the other libraries in the area. Seperate rooms are used for children activities and meetings. This helps keep the main library area quieter. ( what they should be doing with some of the children's activities in the pleasant hill library) They have a good number of study tables but at times it can be hard to find open spaces. The librarians are usually more respectful and friendly than they are in concord. The number of hours they are open are comparable to other libraries in the area. It feels like they have much better hours than the pleasant hill library. Maybe it is because they are open until 9 on mondays and wednesdays, they are open on sundays, and they stay open until 6 on saturdays even though other libraries in the area close at 5. For me at least, they seem like they have good hours considering they are closed every friday during the week. I do not like it when any library is closed for any number of days during the week. In my opinion, however, it is less annoying when a library is closed on a friday as opposed to a different day in the week. I think in terms of convenience and accessibility it makes the most sense strategically for a library to be closed on a friday if it is going to be closed one day in the week. Most libraries that are open on fridays do not stay open late anyway, schoolkids and students do not spend that much time at libraries on fridays and if people and families can not come on fridays they still have the rest of the weekend to visit the library. read more

This library always has the newest bestsellers. It is well maintained and clean. The staff are always nice and ready to help. The area around the location is very beautiful and is next to a nice trail. There are always events in the library such as book sales, youth gatherings, crafts, etc. Sometimes the online catalog system is inaccurate, but the staff can help you locate books. Also, this library has a much better selection and is in a safer location than the Concord library. read more

Nice library. Has a bunch of study cubes in one area, and a few scattered on one end. They are great for studying, but it's weird how some of them have lights and some don't. There are also two rows of big tables with their own lighting and plenty of outlets for laptops. On weekdays it gets busy after 2:30 when the kids get out of school. They end up chatting and gossiping even though signs on the wall say "Quiet study area." read more
