Yep, I'm coming out of retirement for this one, because the people of SF need to know that there is a true healer in their midst. A few months ago I woke up with a pain in my knee. I researched what could be causing this wretched pain in my patella (yes, i learned a new word for knee) and I didn't have much luck on the interwebs. After hobbling through my work day, I came home and could barely walk up my flight of stairs. I popped a few pain pills that proved to be a futile attempt at relief as the pain in my knee had now spread to my lower back, my whole right leg and even my right arm. I seriously started freaking out. I tried lying down in my bed. I tried sitting down in a chair. I tried lying on the hard floor. I cried a bit, called to my cat and contemplated what a life as a cripple might be like and then I wised up and grabbed my iPhone and starting searching on Yelp for, well, HELP!! I came across a few listings for acupuncturists in my general area and started leaving messages. Since this was now past 8:30pm, I figured I was doomed to life of pain (yes, i am a bit dramatic when in pain, but this shit hurt!!!). About a half hour later, a 415 number showed up on my phone and on the other end of the call was a raspy and sultry voice with a kind of friendliness that instantly made me feel better. That was when I met Lynn Belcher. She made time for me the very next morning at the crack of ass. Well, it was more like 8:30am, but that is pretty much the crack of ass for me! Anyhoo. I found parking and approached the classic Victorian building and was greeted by her at the door. Super sweet, great smile and a calming energy that instantly made me feel like I had found the right girl to poke me with pins and make me all kinds of better. During our session, I explained my pain, my history and we got started. I felt a lot better right after our session ended, but knowing acupuncture, I also knew that it would take a few more sessions to get me back in non-limping action again. Those sessions happened and within a few weeks I was back on track and have been seeing Lynn ever since. It's been a few months now and my annoying back pain is gone. I used to get stabbing pains in my lower back when I walked around town and they are now gone. If I get a crook in my neck from sleeping wrong and she works her magic, pow, total relief! I really can't rave enough about Lynn. She's put me on a healthier track, has set me up with herbs and vitamins and my pain is gone. Awesometown. I have not always been the nicest to my body. Your body is a temple? Yeah, the past couple years has been 'my body is the woodshed out back where you keep the garbage pails.' That old lawnmower with the broken blades and bad sparkplugs? Throw it in the back, we'll deal with it next summer. My metaphor has gone off the rails. So had my personal wellness. See what I did there? The thing about acupuncture is that you have to remember that it works best as a preventative care. But when you're seriously off-balance and your body is wondering what you've been doing to it, this is the best place to start. Lynn is not afraid to get down to the nitty gritty of why you feel like crap. Diet, alcohol consumption, sleep patterns, tongue fuzz, even bowel movements are important information to her. And she writes it all down with no judgement. Trust me, be honest with her and she'll target exactly where you need your energy channeled. For those of you who have the fear when it comes to needles, they're hair thin and you barely feel them. You lie down on the table, roll up your pant legs a bit, and Lynn talks you through all the places she will be administering the acupuncture in a very calming voice. Depending on what you're there for, she may give you a bit of an abdomen massage as well show you breathing techniques. Once you're all set, she dims the lights, turns on the music and lets you zone out in a meditative state for about 30 minutes. You chill out after with some tea and you reside in a little zen state for awhile. I sleep so soundly the night after a session, I wish I could visit her every day. My biggest mistake is I've been feeling great and healthy recently, so this is now the perfect time for me to go back to make sure that I stay in this state. I owe Lynn Belcher a debt of gratitude that is difficult to describe adequately. When I first met Lynn, I was suffering from an injury that was the result of thoracic trauma during a skiing accident. I came to Lynn with shoulder and hands problems due to my writing work and the fact that I mostly communicate with my thumb via text (but never while driving of course). This pain has been going on for over a year and a half and was pretty debilitating to the point that I wondered whether I would have to make a career change. I'm well overdue in writing this review for Lynn, who I saw for a few months before she left on sabbatical to South America (she's back now!). Originally referred to me by my ex boyfriend, who has been seeing her for well over 5 years, she was my first visit to see an acupuncturist in my lifetime. The reason I went to Lynn was for excruciating shoulder pain that had stuck with me for over 3 weeks, starting to creep up into the base of my neck and head and no amount of physical therapy and adjusting my ergonomic desk set up was working. It was debilitating, I could barely move my head, I wasn't sleeping at night and walking was starting to become painful. The great thing about Lynn is that she diagnosis the entire body and all its issues, not just the immediate issue at hand, and so I walked out with quite a few lifestyle changes to consider - and a pain-free neck and shoulder! To start, she spent time quietly observing me, how I held my body, my weight, how I breathed. Something I've always known is that I hold tension in my shoulders, but no one has ever pointed out to me that it's tied to how I breathe. Back in college, I struggled with vocal nodules and strained vocal chords because of a particular job that caused strain to my voice, to where it hurt to breath many times because of my closed airways. I had always been a singer, always had breathed through my diaphragm, but it turns out that I had retaught myself how to breathe over the course of those years struggling with my voice. I had become a shallow breather, breathing in through my chest instead of my stomach. This not only forced me to have vocal chord issues, but it also meant my shoulders weren't relaxing naturally because of the way I breathed. In short, my breathing was negatively affecting my posture and therefore, causing me to have these types of neck and shoulder issues. She spent well over 20 minutes coaching me on how to adjust that breathing, exercises that I could do at night before bed to relax me but also retrain myself how to breathe. Needless to say, I've now had 2 years straight with little vocal strain or shoulder/neck pain! She also recommended magnesium intake to help with blood flow and overall health, energy levels which has also helped out as well. As for treating my shoulder, she shared with me up front that she typically would not have used the electro-pulse therapy methods on first-time acupuncture patients, but it was clear to her that it was time for an exception because of the level of pain. Think of this as like putting tiny miniature cable jumpers onto a few needles in my back and then letting gentle, soothing waves of electropulse wash over your body while you sleep with a heat lamp warming you. It was absolutely wonderful...I passed out for a good 45-minute sleep on her table, had wonderful incredible dreams and woke up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated (I woke up drooling, that's how effective it was at helping me fall asleep). We did a second session to make sure it was completely eradicated, but honestly, the first session on its own had me feeling like a new person. Even though being over $100 to visit her is more expensive than other acupuncturists you can see over in ChinaTown or at community health centers, you cannot trade off the entire experience and whole-body fix that you'll get with Lynn. Worth every single penny to see her. read more

Lynn! I came and saw her a couple of times about my stiff neck, it had been flaring up and locking for four years, I am a printmaker and hurt it carving wood blocks. After our second session I was using the foam roller and taking her diet advice and POP! My vertebrae popped back into place and I instantly felt better; fundamentally better; healed. I've since also been much more aware of my histamine intake and my allergies are vertically gone. I am eternally grateful, she dramatically increased my quality of life. I just went snowboarding for 10 consecutive days in Tahoe and, while I wear double-hinged knee braces on both knees these days so I can continue to ride harm without risking further damage, my knees were trashed by the end of this legendary 10-in-a-row. I was having trouble laying on my side, walking up or down steps, even getting up off the floor or from a kneeling position...and I'm only 37!!! I touched base with Lynn when I returned home and saw her 3 days after my last day on the mountain. She treated my knees with needles w/electro-stim clips attached to them AND I WENT BACK UP TO THE MOUNTAIN THE NEXT DAY AND RODE 14 RUNS FOR A TOTAL OF 13,000 VERTICAL FEET! My knees were almost like new the next day. I have NEVER experienced the kind of rapid recovery that acupuncture gives me. It's like steroids without the need for anything but a pin prick to tell your body, "Hey! Can you please fix me here? I'm hurt!" And the body responds! Amazing.
