Here's some datapoints:…read more -Half of the gallery rooms in the home were closed (we were not informed until we went into the home) -You will see more reproductions than real art -You can only view the studio from a plexiglass We mentioned to the front desk that we were surprised that we just paid $40 to see half of the house and behind a plexiglass. They said it was their first winter opening and that they would consider our feedback. My recommendation: they should list out that half the house is under renovation at the front desk, charge $5 or a suggested donation, and honestly should have refunded us the full amount. I actually am shocked that I could go to an actual nice museum for what I paid today.

As a guest you were able to explore the zoo day and night however, you need to stay out of the buildings. The in itself is gorgeous and the rooms are comfortable. There is a total of five guestrooms. There is even an option to rent out the whole inn. There is a large kitchen and living room for guest to use That is a shared space. You can bring your own food and cook there if you want. There is also a few tent sites. Dog friendly! Definitely a unique experience and close to other attractions in the area.

This was part of a…read moresurprise birthday weekend for my wife and until we got to Game Farm Road, she had no idea where we were going. Everyone is shocked when I tell them that we stayed inside what was the giraffe house. The rooms are well-appointed, and the communal are spacious. There's a full kitchen for you to use, couches, tables, a coffee bar. But for the people who are here to explore the modern ruins, the real appeal is outside the inn. We probably spent 5 hours exploring all over the abandoned zoo, and I'm not sure we covered everything. Almost everything is open, so you can go into the buildings, inside the fences, even inside the cages. It's spooky, but so cool. And since the inn has only five rooms, we hardly saw anyone while we were out there, since you can only explore the property if you're staying there. It's only about 20 minutes to downtown Catskill, where we went to eat both nights, but while you're on the property, it's completely quiet, except for the creepily atmospheric sounds of the gun range down the road.

The Skywalk delivers on sweeping views of the Hudson River, and this alone makes it worth a stop…read more The heart of the Skywalk is a pedestrian path along the south parapet of the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. The concrete walkway features a number of small bump outs to take photos. Signs note that because the path is narrower than 6', masks are required. Bikes must be walked. There are concrete barriers separating pedestrians from the vehicle traffic, but the bridge is a busy thoroughfare with lots of truck traffic, so expect it to be quite noisy. To access the bridge path, there is free parking off the traffic circle at the eastern landing, and there is a small park near the toll booths on the western landing (there is also parking here accessible to eastbound traffic). Restrooms at the Bridge Authority facility on the western landing are closed during COVID (there are restrooms at the Cole site and Olana). The trail also connects the Thomas Cole National Historic Site near the western landing with the Olana State Historic Site on the eastern bank of the river. The trail thus links together the 19th century Hudson River School art movement, connecting teacher (Thomas Cole), student (Frederic Church, who built Olana), and subject (the Hudson). This is a really cool idea, and it's also quite a hike. We clocked the roundtrip from the parking lot on the eastern landing to the Cole site at just over 3 miles. The last leg up to Olana (which we hiked separately) also includes a monster hill. Budget your time and energy appropriately, and bring water and comfortable shoes. It's free parking but you have to cross the traffic at the roundabout and that's always a good time. In place since 1935, this cantilever and truss bridge is 145 feet above the Hudson River below. Plenty of space for pedestrians with a very high curb and that made me feel safe from the traffic. There are a couple of spots with overhangs so that you can step a bit out from the bridge to look at it from the side. Helpful! The bridge joins the cities of Hudson and Catskill, carrying NY route 23. It is a total of 5040 feet from end to end. The toll is eastbound only. There are a number of mounted telephones for suicide awareness. I guess enough people have jumped that they felt the need to put the phones up. On a clear day, the "America's First Canvas" notes make sense. This area got some of the first American landscape paintings by Thomas Cole (1801-1848) and Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900). It's a…read moretwo-lane bridge, with a speed limit of 35 carrying a decent amount of scenery, which is enjoyable. Traffic isn't too bad at all, unlike the Mid Hudson Bridge. Here in there, traffic will occur. In my experience, going eastward, the stop light at 9G can be backed up. It moves along pretty well, causing no concerns. The electronic tolling definitely brings speed, which is a huge plus. For great travel convenience, this is the bridge to take.

Back then it was a good half-hour drive in either direction to find a bridge, so this was definitely a useful addition. A small toll of $1.50 to cross ($1.25 with E-Z Pass), but only if you're going eastbound. We were westbound today so no toll! Woot, woot! Though officially the Kingston-Rhinecliff bridge, it is actually named after George Clinton, New York's first Governor, fourth Vice President of the United States and a resident of the Hudson Valley. Meadows creeks and…read moreeagles The Clinton Nature Trail is a short but very cool trail located next to the town hall and library. Only about a mile in length, it was the work of eagle scout David Foote and some of his buddies. The trail meanders through the woods until it reaches Little Wappinger Creek and then doubles back. The cool thing about the trail is that the scouts also made a informative map that is available at the start of the trail. Along the trail are markers and you can look on the map to see information pertaining to that particular spot and the different plants and trees are named and identified. A lovely little trail, especially in the fall and winter. A wonderful little place to get a bit of exercise and learn about the local environment.

A very sturdy…read morelighthouse The first lighthouse built in this area was back in 1838. The ship traffic was increasing dramatically as steamboats became more popular and a lighthouse was definitely needed. Unfortunately the wooden structure wasn't up to the massive ice floes and storms that hammer this area and was soon in very poor condition . So a new and much stronger lighthouse was built with stone and reinforced concrete pilings. Over the years the ice once again proved too much for even this stronger light. Parts were removed and brought over to the Bristol lighthouse in Rhode Island and eventually the rest of the second lighthouse was demolished in 1953. In 1915 a third and even stronger lighthouse was built. It had a 4th order Fresnel Lens, a 1,000 pound fog bell and stood over 48 feet high. It served the shipping of the area well for decades. It was automated in 1954 but even this light took a pounding for the storms, cold and massive ice floes and was eventually abandoned and left to the wind, ice and elements. Fortunately a group of lighthouse lovers decided to do something about it and started a restoration project in 1984 and rebuilt and furnished the light and house to it's 1930 look. They certainly did a lovely job and the light is now as in excellent condition. The lighthouse is presently a museum and tours go out there on occasion to give a glimpse of what it was like living in a lighthouse surrounded by water. An impressive lighthouse that will continue to please and educate people for a long, long time.
