6/26/26: Staatsburgh can give many of the Newport mansions a run for their money. On the drive up to the mansion, you'll see a beautiful sculpture of Diana the huntress. We made reservations online. Upon entry, you'll check in and pay at the gift shop in the rear of the estate. Lindsay was very helpful. Inside the gift shop, there's wonderful items for serving tea and historical books on area mansions. Our wonderful docent was Faith. She was so passionate and highly knowledgeable of all the estate decor and family history. Think Faith is one of the best docents ever! The tour group starts out in a very low-keyed way. During that time, you're learning about the history of the estate in a fun way. Out of nowhere, the Gilded Age Opulence appears. YOU'RE WOWED! Unfortunately, Staatsburgh doesn't receive the accolades like the other well known area mansions. If you're going to see one estate in the area, make it Staatsburgh! read more

The Staastsburgh Estate grounds are simply beautiful, expansive and extremely well maintained. The long canopied tree-lined paved driveway winds its way up to the mansion and down to and along the Hudson River. There is a smaller unpaved road that leads to the carriage house and around to several gardens and eventually up to the front entry way of the mansion. We didn't go inside as we had spent 40 minutes walking the grounds but plan to do so on a future visit. read more

A Wedding at Mills Mansion, Staatsburg, NY There are places where history doesn't just exist--it breathes. Mills Mansion at the Staatsburg State Historic Site is one of them. Perched above the Hudson River, surrounded by sweeping lawns and timeless architecture, the scenery holds a quiet grandeur that makes every wedding feel both intimate and monumental. I had the privilege of photographing a wedding there, and it was an experience that will stay with me for a long time. The mansion itself feels cinematic in scale, yet human in its warmth. Inside, sunlight drifts through tall windows, painting slow-moving patterns across the floor. Outside, the wind off the river carries laughter down the terrace steps, mingling with the rustle of old trees and the faint hum of the day. It's a space that invites stillness and awe all at once--a perfect stage for love stories that feel like they've been unfolding for generations. This is undoubtedly on my list of top 10 places to get married in the Hudson Valley. I love it here. read more

Stattsburgh Historic Site is a must visit. Just the drive up to the mansion is so nice and you could sense, that you're in for a memorable experience. I called the mansion, made reservations for their 2:00 PM tour, and the check-in process went smoothly. David, our guide, was knowledgeable, humorous, gave us plenty of time for pictures, and conducted the entire tour at a perfect pace. Each room that we were introduced to outdid the previous. You will see opulence that gives competition to the Rhode Island mansions. The grounds around the site are ideal for picture taking and there is a gift shop with very nice and historical items. I highly recommend the Stattsburgh Historical Site and enjoy the rich history of this region. read more

This is a beautiful house and especially in autumn, you can come here just to walk on the property and enjoy a colorful view. But the house is really what you wanna see. Staatsburgh is a great example of a Gilded Age house, but the outside is a little weathered which reminds you how much of an upkeep houses like this are. The public bathroom was obviously an original bathroom as it has a tub in it, so that's delightful. If you are early for your tour (which you need to book in advance) you can currently look at an exhibit on the Mills family + on the servants. Or you can do it after, but both rooms were interesting so are worth doing. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and took us around the first and second floor, describing the former owners and the objects in the house and social customs of the time. The dining is the real showpiece. Don't forget to look up! Great ceiling art, furniture, and then the view to the river. It was really living in style. The gift shop is also pretty large and worth browsing. A lot of historic sites don't even have gift stores open any more, so it was enjoyable to even have something. For $6 a person, this was a great way to spend a few hours and on a nice weather day, it's worth strolling around. read more

This is my favorite Historic Site in Dutchess County, primarily for the grounds. The tracks are not along the riverbank here, a ways in, so you can walk practically to the river's edge. Plus the grounds are very spacious with lots of space to lounge and/or walk. Years ago, I also considered the tour to be pretty reasonably priced, but once prices went up (admittedly many years back now) it no longer seemed worth it for the price. What you see inside is impressive, but you are not guided through significant parts of the mansion, some of which was actually used as administration space for Dutchess County, I believe. It's worth checking their website regularly to learn of updates and possible special events, particularly during Covid and during the different parts of the year. When they do get to hold events here, they're very interesting and popular. read more

We didn't come here for the mansion, we were here at Margaret Norrie to take a hike, but our hike took us through the grounds, and we enjoyed what we saw, which was mostly the icehouse area and the views of the Hudson River. It's very civilized and manicured here in contrast to the rest of the park, which is more spooky and has crumbling buildings. The views of the Hudson were really pretty, even in the winter. I imagine this is a pleasant place to be in the summer as well. read more

We made an unscheduled stop to this estate. Unfortunately, we were too late to make the last house tour. But we did walk around the magnificent ground which backs to the Hudson River. We saw multiple picnics on the lush green lawn close to the river. Graduating high school seniors were taking prom pictures. The exterior of the house was very grand. Hopefully, we will get a chance to return in the future. read more

This was one of our favorite tours! We got there for the first tour at 11am and there were only 5 of us. It was $8 per person for the tour. Our guide was Marilyn and she was fantastic. You can tell that she loves the property and the history behind it. It comes through when she tells you stories about the family and home. She's very animated and lively. She's a terrific guide! Calling All En Plein Air Artists! Put on your most comfortable walking shoes/hiking boots! There's limited parking, but it is free to explore the grounds and gardens! Great views of the Hudson River. Excellent views of the mansion for those who want to include architecture in their paintings. This is an awesome place to go for a walk, and in the winter go for a sled. The grounds are beautiful and there's great River views. The trails are pretty well-maintained, and there's a little mix by the river to have picnics. This is a great place to spend an afternoon. It's also wonderful to watch the sunset here. read more

Omgosh, we enjoyed the tour so much! Myself, my husband and brother-in-law enjoy tours of historic sights all over the country. It's hard to compete with what Dutchess County offers in tremendous Hudson Valley history and opulence! Frank Pedala was probably the best tour guide we've ever experienced. His knowledge was vast and he gave us all the time to ask questions and answered thoroughly. Frank is a true asset to the Mills Mansion. The grounds and views are spectacular. It was a beautiful Saturday, September 11, 2021 when we arrived for our 2pm tour, which lasted for one hour. Before the tour began, we walked the grounds a bit and noticed some people picnicking with their children and dogs. The gift shop isn't very large, but it offers a lot of interesting treasures including a good assortment of Hudson Valley history books. Our tour needed to be reserved and there was only eight people in our group. 2/3 of us wore masks, including our guide , but we were never on top of each other due to the limited attendance, Plentiful free parking and a so-worth-it entrance fee for three seniors of $4.00 each. It's a short walk (1/8 mile?) from parking lot to museum entrance round the back of the mansion. There are stairs to be climbed, and I wondered about handicap accessibility. Frank mentioned that back in the day there was a "luggage elevator" but not a regular elevator. So if you need assistance, you may want to phone ahead and ask about that. The Mills Mansion is not as over the top as the Vanderbilt's place down the river, but it seems much more livable. Modestly sized rooms with expensive accoutrements make it more of a mansion than a faux palace. And the kicker is that by building on the other side of the railroad, this is the only truly riverside mansion in the Hudson Valley. Eat it, Roosevelts! You can walk on their big giant backyard lawn, all the way down to the water where they have an old boathouse. Plus, it's off Route 9 in a tiny hamlet called Staatsburg. Check out the creepy abandoned school as you drive down the road into Staatsburg, too. read more

I have visited many historic houses in the Hudson Valley, and today was the first time we visited the Mills Mansion. I cannot say enough good about our guide, Heather Phillips, who was knowledgeable, energetic (even though we were the last tour of the day on a Sunday), could answer our questions...the price is low and the value is high. We finally made it to the Mills Mansion yesterday. It's a very beautiful country home. They just finished rebuilding the front portico so the scaffolding is down. The next project will be to open the basement for tours which will include the kitchen. They have a big wish list of projects. The house could use millions in work and they are doing the best they can with the funding and fund raising they are getting now. Our tour guide "Craig" gave us lots of interesting information. The most stunning room was the dining room. Make sure you check out the marble walls, it takes your breath away. Mrs Mills has a Marie Antoinette bedroom too but not as over the top as the Mrs. Vanderbilt's bedroom down the road. You get a good tour but NY will not allow you up to the third floor for safety reasons. The house still needs work on the outside and little by little they are fixing it so don't be put off as you approach the home. The handicap ramp will soon be open on the front portico. read more
