Cleveland Humanities Magnet (CORE) is one of LAUSD's crown jewels. The teachers are inspiring, dedicated and devoted to their students and the program. The program turns out a lot of critical thinkers - if you believe children should be seen and not heard - then this is NOT the school for you. Your children WILl challenge your assumptions, call out your privilege and question your beliefs and will always WIN :-) So they become smarter than us and love learning and their teachers. OMG! What happened to our once HIGHLY Spirited High School? 8 Graduates of 66-73 (3 Veterans) decided to get together for the 2026 Homecoming game. I +/- one or 2 have attended the last 25 years. Came to find out it was Sept. 18th 2026.. ABSOLUTELY NO advertising ANY WHERE. PLEASE Explain "HOMECOMING" ? and WHY HAS CHS CHOSEN TO IGNORE ALUMNI ? It is also nothing new, OR we "old people" did NOT see "IT" coming either, as a few years back all the Kids so self absorbed called out GRAD years.. SADLY, nothing past 85/86 till I raised BOTH HANDS WAVING and prouldy yelled 1968 and 1971..EYES WIDE, WHAT? WOW ? cool ..yeah, uh Ok, moving on .. a few other ALUMS behind us nodded and said in mild disgust "class of 76" .. If you are considering enrolling your child in this school, especially if they require Special Education services or have an IEP, i would consider to look elsewhere where - the main teachers at this school are horrible humans. We had bad experiences with two of them. I would not recommend this school for families seeking strong support for children with IEPs or special education needs. read more

We visited Cleveland H.S. last fall to attend a J.V. football game that our grandson played in for an opposing team. It was not very convenient to navigate the campus, specifically to get to the stadium. Unless we missed it, there is no parking lot close to the stadium itself. From the main parking lot I could see the light stanchions WAY off in the distance. At the time I was dealing with a foot injury, so not keen on walking too far to get to the entrance. I suggested to Dear Hubby that we drive the adjacent street to get as close to the game venue as possible. We were able to snag a spot on the side street. Much more convenient. Navigating around weeds, trash, and assorted other debris on the sidewalk, we made it to the entrance gate. My overall impression was that this school doesn't have a lot of spare funds for maintaining clean grounds / landscaping. I felt sad that the students are stuck with such a drab environment in which to spend much of their lives for four years. I can't speak to the actual quality of instruction and other services, but judging from the physical surroundings of the athletic stadium, it was not impressive. At other schools we visited during the season, they provided an announcer to highlight players' achievements during the course of the game. That didn't happen at Cleveland. They also didn't have a home cheer-leading squad for the junior varsity team. The Cleveland J.V. team on the field was very talented. As I recall, they wiped out our visiting team, handily. I also found it sad that they didn't get the support of the school from the spirit perspective, when the boys worked hard to do their part. read more

Stephanie Slaughter is unorganized, mean and an overall terrible human. I have no idea how she made it as an assistant principal and should be removed as the person in charge of student activities. You can tell that she is an unhappy person by how she treats students and parents!! She threatened to hold diplomas hostage if students don't follow what she says and is essentially ruining my child's graduation experience. She needs to be removed and she will be reported to the board! I'm sick of having to deal with her and her bad attitude, if you are unhappy at your job then quit!! read more

Review based on pool, only. Pool is indoors, heated, clean and spacious. Parking is usually not hard. The grounds around the pool are not kept up though, over grown, dry/dead and lots of debre. read more

The office staff are rude, lazy and hate their jobs. It is also irritating when students are answering phones. They never seem to know the answers to anything. The counselors are lacking in their knowledge of any college other than CSUN. If your child is in CORE, they will be brainwashed in CRT. The neighborhood is in the barrio. Gang fights at lunch. Police presence almost every afternoon. Do not send your child here! Fortunately, our child took AP classes and did extremely well because they were on line their entire senior year. read more

The only positive part is the CORE program which is very effective and has a great curriculum. Additionally, the college counselors are amazing at this school. The administration at this school is close to awful. The security at this school is the worst part as they belittle students by actually bullying them. There is a lack of feminine hygiene products. They also replace a smoothie for a full cafeteria meal which is nutritionally harmful. When my daughter attended this school, she and her friends were told by Ms. Holton, an administrator, that she should cover up because the "male staff felt uncomfortable going back to their wives." There is a great pride within this school despite the pitfalls yet there are many things that should be addressed at this school. read more

Here's an honest review about the Highschool as a junior student First off I like to say some good things about the school first naming some of the good teachers, here's to name some: Mrs. Lopez, Mr. Campos, Mr. Mitchell, Mr. Calvert, Mr. Haemker, Mrs. Mazenod, Mrs. Garcia, My AP Spanish Teacher (still bad at spanish), Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Garfinkle, Mr. Sniderman, Mr. Guzman, Mrs. Cheyne, Mrs. Garcia (PE), Mr. Jones (PE), Mr. Ramierz, Mr. Johnson, Mr Cardona, Mrs. Frias, the ladies in the front office, the health office, etc; Now thats out of the way the bad things about the school, the water fountains rarely or sometimes never work you can tell the school spent its budget on the three new buildings, the bathrooms are disgusting and kids keep activating the fire alarm by them constantly vaping and let me tell you something if you're honestly that addicted to flavored air at least do it so my class doesn't get flashbanged by the lights. I've tried reaching out to the career office but they never at all had the time for me it's already been a few weeks since I was supposed to be called in. Can't forget about the recent controversial topic in the school, yes a teacher did get fired for "allegedly" fiddling around with kids under the age though that story is all over the place but guess what teacher he was? If you guessed AP Chem then you're right one of the most important classes is currently going under due to the situation because guess what? There's no teacher! Most of the kids on the football team are doing shady stuff behind the scenes and I know it but I'm not gonna say any names (you know who you are). There are also major fights that happen in the school, like one not so long ago that broke out between rival gangs in the area, it was pretty silly tbh. Speaking of that there are police presence at the school because of the crime rate at the school, and don't let the "charter" fool you it isn't a charter highschool. Also the "everyone will gradute" doesn't always work like since when was a D- a passing grade? They're scraping the bottom of the barrel with this one. Graduated in 2010, this school had some of the worst counselors. Never cared and were never available. Forgot to enroll me in a class that I needed in summer school and when I went into the counselors office for help and direction, I could not speak to one person. No one cared. I graduated CHS in 2007, I was in the AVID program ran at the time by Mr. Ray Crawford, who was my mentor. This school prepared me for college. As a masters degree grad and currently pursuing my doctorate degree, I am proud to say that CHS molded me. By far the worst experience. Most of the staff there in the office including a counselor are very unprofessional! They don't seem to know what they're doing. Don't reply to emails. You have to physically show up to the office in order to get someone to help you. And even so they don't really help. They lose paperwork and get back to you only if you keep insisting. The education at this school was average. However, a lot of the male core teachers always hit on the female and sometimes male students and a few slept with my classmates. By far the most amazing experience I could have ever asked for! Both of my children attend and academically they are doing amazing. Teachers are at the top of their game. My kids have gotten involved, met so many friends and I never thought I would have parents as friends in HS. Amazing experience!
