I met Dr. Ortega at a health fair back in 2017. She saw me at a booth adjacent to her and noticed my incredibly crowded/crooked smile. She asked me if I wanted to pursue orthodontic treatment and I said I was actually going to set up an appointment with a doc that was local to me for metal braces. She said she would love to take a look at my case because it was one of the most interesting cases she had seen. Every time I look at my teeth in the mirror I am grateful that she approached me that day. She was confident that Invisalign would be the best choice for me as I was hesitant to do metal braces. All other orthodontists didn't even believe in Invisalign much less believe that my case would even be possible with it. After getting my wisdom teeth removed, I was ready to get my first mold done. Both health-wise and cosmetically, my teeth were in bad shape. I think I visited Dr. Ortega every 6 weeks for 4 years in order to follow up on it all. Every time I went in I can say she and her staff ran the best medical practice I ever went to. The amount of care she showed helped me understand every step of the way. Every time we hit a snag on treatment, her passion for her craft led her to figure out how we were going to proceed with the next step. Those many, many Invisalign mold redo's ensured that I finally was able to smile like a normal person after almost 20 years of never smiling for a single picture. Finally after 4 years I took off my last retainer and saw my final smile of the process and I thought it was perfect. Dr. Ortega, being the artist that she is, was still not content until she had put the finishing touches on her masterpiece. She reshaped some of my teeth with a few resin bonds and I was given a whitening treatment. Finally, she could put down her brush after her last stroke on her work of art. Had I had a normal case, I was sure I would have been done in 1.5 years at most. Now I have a deep respect for my teeth and oral health which would not have been possible had she not been one of the best medical practitioners I have had the pleasure to meet. I stated that I would not agree to anything that required out-of-pocket payment and that I only wanted what was covered under my annual check-up. When they suggested taking X-rays, my husband declined and said he only wanted the cleaning. She told to my husband the X-rays would be fully covered by our insurance and that we would not have to pay anything. However, after I was seated in the dental chair, a coordinator came in and said the total treatment cost would be over $2,000 and that I would need to pay $350. I clearly repeated that both my husband and I only wanted the simple cleaning covered by insurance. They acknowledged this, and we both received only the simple cleaning that day. Two weeks later, the office billed my husband $948 for services not covered by insurance--specifically the X-rays the staffs had told us were fully covered. The office also charged me $88 for "oral hygiene instruction." Instruction? During the visit, the dentist asked when my last cleaning was, and I said four months ago. She mentioned inflammation but didn't identify a cause. I told that I have diabetes and would follow up with my primary care doctor, but that for that day I only wanted the simple cleaning covered by my annual check-up. I believe this billing situation is extremely dishonest. I clearly stated multiple times--when making the appointment, during the visit, to the dentist, and to the coordinator--that I only wanted procedures fully covered by insurance. Yet I still received these charges. I would like to ask: if a dental office says X-rays are fully covered and proceeds with them, but later claims they are not covered, is the patient really responsible for paying the full amount? I also want to know if anyone else has experienced something similar with this dental office.
