One of the highlights is exploring the grounds. It was a beautiful fall day with lots of wind. We even saw 3 deer. There is a lot of history here. Everyone had a twin bed until marriage. Some features were innovations for the time. They even had an indoor milking room for the house. A great place to bring any history lover. Plus it is haunted.

There is a small day use…read morefee associated with the state park, although I'm not sure how strictly they enforce this here as the parking lot is a distance away from the visitor center. I highly recommend stopping here for at least a few minutes as you get breathtaking views of Lake Superior. There's a pull out lot by the side of the road if you don't feel comfortable driving the narrow road to the real parking lot just a few steps from the cliff. It wasn't too crowded when I visited, but I'm not sure if the road can handle two way traffic... There isn't really a pathway to get to the edge of the cliff, but you can see there's a small stone wall erected so people can stand a little bit closer to appreciate the view of the water. Great place for photos.

The visitor is led around in a group which usually leave by the top of the hour. For myself, my knees became weak when we viewed the triple expansion compound engine. One note, the ship no longer sits w/i the water. The tour guide had been at this job for 10 yrs and it definitely showed.

When Highway 61 was built, it replaced a road that went quite a bit out of the way to avoid the…read moremountains and cliffs here at Silver Creek. And after then 1920's, there was a narrow two-lane road that went along the cliff's edge. It was rather dramatic as it included the danger of rocks and boulders falling from the cliff walls overhead. This happened more and more often until the folks at the Minnesota DOT decided that it would be easier to just build THROUGH the mountain instead of going around it. It took over three years of dynamite blasting to remove over half a million cubic feet of rock to construct the tunnel. The tunnel opened in 1994. The old road is still here and it's a walking/biking path that includes the Gitchi Gami trail that has some spectacular views of Lake Superior. There is a small parking lot on the north side of the tunnel on the east side of the road. There is no toll to use the tunnel. [Review 17889 overall - 109 in Minnesota - 1410 of 2022.]

About three miles south of the Duluth/Superior bridges along the Peace Memorial Highway, this small…read morerest area is a nice spot for a break. The park has a decent sized parking area and a gazebo with picnic tables. There is also a historical marker, "The Sioux uprising in Minnesota during the Summer of 1862, culminating in the New Ulm Massacre, caused great alarm in Superior. A Committee of Safety was chosen, a Home Guard organized, and a stockade built on the bay shore here. An inventory of all firearms in Superior revealed a total of 60 shotguns, rifles and pistols. The state sent 192 muskets and 2 cannon. To assist the Home Guard, the Governor sent a company of Wisconsin soldiers that had been captured by the Confederates at Shiloh and paroled. This Company was called back for Civil War duty in the Summer of 1863 and was replaced by other Wisconsin paroled soldiers. The Chippewas residing in this vicinity remained friendly to the whites. By August 1863, the Sioux in Minnesota had been overcome and most of the soldiers left Superior. Eventually the stockade was abandoned." A great campground along the North Shore. We stayed at cart in site 17, you're right on the cliffs…read moreso the view is beautiful. It's a pretty spacious site as well with a private bench that overlooks the lake. The walk in is about 5 minutes but there is a slight incline towards the sites so not a bad walk but with a cart full of stuff you might be feeling it. Beware of the flies!! The flies were so awful at our site, not sure if that's the case with the other sites but we decided to do a hike mid day because we couldn't relax at the site without a swarm of flies around us. we probably won't go back to this site because of that. The site has a bear box but critters can still get inside!! we have some of our food nibbled on both nights so they definitely know there way around. Pebble beach is beautiful, busy at times but great for relaxing, dipping your toes in or enjoying a picnic. Speaking of picnics, they have a designated "picnic area" that has a pavilion, an inside multipurpose room, flush toilets and plenty of picnic tables along the shoreline. It's not my favorite campsite along the North Shore, but still beautiful and worth the visit.

After you see that, walk down to the shore and capture a beautiful picture of the lighthouse from there. It is worth mentioning that every staff member we interacted with was friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable.
