Being a military spouse for over five years, I knew there would be challenges. I prepared myself for my husband being away for 6+ months and relied more heavily on my family. What I didn't expect was how much military life could impact my marriage. My husband came home from deployments, changed, and witnessed things I could never imagine. Worst of all, he is lawfully unable to talk about it to keep the country safe. This led to many nights of few emails, calls, and video chats. I felt like I barely knew my partner or how to help him. Intimacy is something that is seldom talked about, especially among men, yet is a central part of most adult lives. It wasn't until recently that I realized how difficult communicating about intimacy was for me and how much resentment I built up as a result. I felt stuck in my 17 year relationship with me wife - my needs weren't being met and attempts to talk through it ended up in arguments. Rather than deal with the issue I tried to ignore it but slowly withdrew from the relationship to cope without even realizing. Anger and coldness toward my wife created a spiral of resentment we could both feel, but neither of us could stop.   I came across Closeness and was drawn in by the positive reviews. I'll admit, though, after looking at Tari's website I felt his services were a little (okay, a lot) outside of my comfort zone much less my wife's. I wasn't looking for a sex and intimacy coach - even though that was where we needed help - because I wasn't sure I'd ever feel comfortable talking about intimacy with a third party. I couldn't even talk about it with my wife! I found the Closeness podcast on the website, though, and everything started improving. I listened to 2-3 episodes of the podcast and found myself wanting to binge-listen to the rest. Tari touched on many emotions I felt but couldn't verbalize, voiced the female perspective in a way I understood, and did so without making me feel shame for being middle aged and not knowing this stuff.  After listening to all the episodes I felt like I already knew Tari, trusted him, and was sure he could help but needed to convince my wife so I put an episode on in the car to see how it would land. My wife said she understood more about the male perspective, and validated the female perspectives Tari shared, which I figured was a good sign. She was shocked how well Tari conveyed the female perspective in a way even she couldn't. After listening to a few more episodes together I floated the idea of going in for a session. Still a no, but I was happy with the progress from listening to the podcast. After a bad argument a few weeks later, though, she was willing to give it a try. Tari started our first session by asking if either of us were carrying any resentment. Tari guided the conversation in such a gentle, caring way that both of us were able to answer honestly and discuss without an argument. I think that situation sums up Tari's essence well - compassionate, intuitive, and experienced - and I honestly knew we were in good hands. Our first session was 90 minutes and was 60 minutes of talking and 30 minutes of interactive demos. Tari's style is unique from anything I've ever experienced, which is part of what makes him so effective. The talk portion of our session felt like an extension of his podcast but specific to our situation . He did a great job of tailoring the conversation to our comfort level and ensured we both felt cared for and safe in his office. The interactive coaching really takes things to the next level, though, and has been invaluable to my wife and I. It's one thing to talk about building chemistry, but it's another to do exercises and experience the energy it creates with your partner in real time. Prior to the appointment I was concerned the session would be a racy, graphic scene out of a porn movie but it wasn't tawdry at all. It was more focused on the emotion and connection behind intimacy, as opposed to the mechanics of the physical act, and that was exactly what we needed. I get the sense that Tari can go from mild to wild, but he did a great job of helping us move past our relationship barriers while simultaneously respecting both of our comfort levels. As a feminist in the Bay Area, Tari has really helped me better understand where men are coming from. His perspective on women's issues is sensitive, open, sympathetic, understanding, and LOVING - but without coddling.
