Closet to Closet is my first stop when I have a sewing project, for upcyclable fabrics and garments. But, invariably I seem to find something cute (that I intend to cut up) that fits me!
This is one of the first drop-offs for people who are moving off of St. Croix, or cleaning out their closets. So you'll find some great values if you hit it on the right day.
There is a wide range of gently used merchandise here, from beaded wedding and bridemaids gowns to candleholders and sheets, a room full of kids' clothing and toys, furniture, jeans, t-shirts, lots of medical scrubs, plus size clothing, a fabric bin, kitchen items, and lots of other other odds and ends. Children's books are often free. Used shoes and sandals are very inexpensive but not always long-lasting in this climate!
There is also a "Shabby Chic" boutique within the thrift store that is only open Fridays and Saturdays. I have yet to make it in to see what they offer, but it's advertised as higher quality designer stuff.
Closet to Closet has a dedicated staff and volunteers who put in a lot of hours, so the store is open more often for longer hours than some of our other local thrift stores on St. Croix. This is a carefully edited collection of offerings -- the inventory seems to rotate fairly often, and they usually pull out special items for holiday events.
Thrift stores in this climate can be quite musty, but Closet to Closet in Peters Rest is acceptably clean and while I do wash items I purchase, I have yet to come across any fabric item that wasn't recently laundered. The parking lot is a little tight, so take your time.
You can't beat the prices, there are gems to be found, and you are supporting a longstanding community service organization:
******All proceeds benefit the St. Croix Women's Coalition, aiding women and families and addressing domestic violence issues in the St. Croix community. And low-income families in need of items from the store can apply with the Coalition for shopping vouchers. *******
